Chapter 1

Author: Nameless
When my girlfriend, Eleanor Reed, received a call from her ex, Jared Campbell, I was driving her to visit her bedridden father at the hospital.

She was wearing her earphones, so I had no idea what Jared had told her. While comforting him, she occasionally glanced at me, looking like she was holding something back.

In the end, she took a deep breath and made up her mind. "Alright, calm down. I'll go to you. It's okay. He'll understand."

After hanging up, Eleanor told me to pull over so she could use the car. Her voice was soft. "Jared isn't doing well. I need to be there for him."

"You'd better think twice," I said flatly.

A trace of impatience appeared on her face. "Jared just lost both his father and grandfather. Can you be more understanding?"

I reminded her again, "And are you sure you want to desert me by the road?"

She became irritated. "Come on, be good. Just get off."

I smiled bitterly. "Fine."

The knot between her brows finally eased. She shifted toward me, probably intending to comfort me, but I immediately hopped out of the car. Her hand froze in midair before retreating.

Eleanor sighed. "Take good care of my father, okay? Try to get on his good side, and you might win his approval soon."

With that, she sped off.

I called a rideshare and went straight back to Eleanor's place to pack up all my things.

I had a small apartment of my own and only stayed here from time to time, so I didn't have much to pack. In no time, I was done.

During the move, I got a call from the hospital. They told me that George Reed's prepaid medical balance had run out and asked me to make another payment.

George was Eleanor's father. He was a regular at the hospital.

Once, I had happened to cover one of his bills, and ever since then, somehow, it had become my responsibility.

Eleanor cared a lot about her pride, so she would never outright refuse to pay me back. But every time, she would round down the amount and then take forever to transfer the money to me.

I gave the hospital Eleanor's number and told them that I was no longer involved with the family in any way. They could call her to collect the payment.

After some thought, I figured I should at least let her know what was going on. I called her, but she didn't answer. A few more attempts later, I realized she had blocked my number.

I still felt it was only right to let her know, so I used another number to text her about the hospital. I also told her we were breaking up.

Whatever happened after that was none of my business.

The next morning, I went to the office early to find Eleanor and hand in my resignation.

A few years ago, she had asked me to join her and build the company together. At the same time, she wanted me to work for her as an assistant without any official title or stake in the business.

Her argument was that everything she had was mine anyway. She would give me enough spending money every month, so there was no point worrying about things like shares or job titles.

She also said there was no need to give me a high salary, since that would help me avoid paying too much in taxes.

I was in love with her back then, so I was willing to give up a promising career and join her startup. Even then, something about what she was saying instinctively felt wrong.

I told her seriously, "My salary is payment for my work, and paying taxes is only right. I'm young, and I'm perfectly capable of supporting myself. What am I supposed to make of the money you give me as allowance?

"Besides, if my position isn't official, how am I supposed to do my job properly? What company sends the boss' personal assistant to negotiate deals?

"And how am I supposed to manage my subordinates when I don't even have an official position? You're running a legitimate company, not some shell company or little backyard operations."

Eleanor's expression darkened, but in the end, she gave me a proper position and a salary that matched the job.

She truly did have some talent. Over the past few years, the company had expanded from a single office to a three-floor commercial building in the city's busiest business district.

Soon, though, none of that would have anything to do with me anymore. After breaking up with her, there was no way I could stay at the company.

In the end, the Stone family got their money and finally agreed to leave. As for Eleanor and George, they were left with a mountain of predatory debt they would never be able to repay in their lifetimes.Later, I found out the reason Jared had been so eager to get Eleanor and me back t

Jared's expression grew even more desperate, as if he was determined to get Eleanor and me back together."I don't go back to old flames," I said. "Don't come looking for me again. If you keep interfering with my work, I'll call the police.""No! You can't leave!"He shot to his feet so quickly that the chair scraped loudly across the floor. "You have to promise me you'll get back together with her!"I had become a regular at this cafe since joining Carter Group, so one of the staff came over to ask if I needed help. I nodded. "Please call the police."The moment Jared heard that, he left in a hurry.I supposed he and Eleanor were truly made for each other because when I got home and parked in my apartment complex, I found her waiting under a streetlamp. I had no idea how she had found my new address. She looked haggard and disheveled. "Cory, I messed up. Please forgive me! Anastasia looked displeased. "Where are the security guards? How did they let someone like this in?"George panicked. He quickly pulled Eleanor forward. "Anastasia, she's your daughter! You promised me that one day you'd let her return to the Carter family and take her rightful place!"Eleanor snapped, "Dad, forget about this woman who abandoned her man and daughter. We don't need her, and I couldn't care less about joining their family!"For all her words, however, her eyes remained fixed on the Carters onstage. The greed, envy, and jealousy in her gaze couldn't have been more obvious.Anastasia chuckled. "Oh. It's you. I remember now."George became excited, only for her next words to shatter his fantasy. "You must be looking for my little sister, Sandra. She never stopped thinking about you, even before she died."Before joining Carter Group, I had heard that Anastasia had a younger sister. She had been quite the heartbreaker in her younger days. In the end, she died in an acc

I thought I caught a trace of provocation in Madeline's words."You hear that, Cory?" Eleanor shrieked. "You're dispensable to her!"I could hardly follow her logic. "What the hell are you going on about?"Wasn't it perfectly normal for both employer and employee to have the right to choose?Eleanor was about to keep making a scene when several more security guards arrived and restrained her. They asked whether we wanted to call the police, and Madeline turned to me for my opinion.Honestly, I wanted Eleanor to stay out of my life forever. Realistically, though, even if we called the police, all they could do was give her a warning and send her on her way. Therefore, I reluctantly said I would rather the company tighten security and that we could forget about calling the police this time.By then, Eleanor had calmed down a little. She shot Madeline a resentful look. "I'll get justice for my dad and me. We'll take back everything that belongs to us."After Eleanor left, the secu

Oh. So they were only looking to rent a place. With how smug they were acting, I had thought they were here to buy one.Eleanor scrambled to explain, "My place needs some renovations, so I thought I'd rent somewhere for the time being."Jared put an arm around her shoulders. "Actually, Eleanor and I are back together. We have you to thank for that, Mr. Young. You'll give us your blessing, right?"They were renting an apartment, yet they somehow managed to turn it into such a production. I wasn't the only one. Everyone else in the room looked awkward, too."Sure. Congrats."In fact, they should stay together forever and not ruin others' lives. They were speechless for a moment. I took the opportunity to follow the agent into an office so we could discuss the details properly.…I didn't see Eleanor and Jared again for quite some time after that. The gap between our companies was simply too wide, so there wasn't much overlap between our business circles.Still, now and then, my

On the phone, George accused me of being ungrateful and irresponsible. He said I had lived off Eleanor's money for years, yet I had let my bad temper get the better of me by refusing to take care of him at the hospital. Worse still, I had now "betrayed" his daughter."I knew from the start that you and my daughter weren't a good match," he seethed. "If she hadn't insisted on you over and over, I never would've agreed. How can you live with yourself after treating her like that?"Even when Eleanor and I were dating, George had always made it clear, in one way or another, that he looked down on me.Thus, we rarely spoke on the phone. That was also why, when Eleanor and I broke up, I blocked every way she could contact me, but I somehow forgot about him.I was about to block him, too, but what he said next stopped me. "When you have time, bring your parents to see me. I'd like to ask them myself how they raised a son like you!"I could tolerate him insulting me, but bringing my pare
