Chapter 5 Cutting Them All Off

Author: Henry
It was Grant calling. Apparently I still had his number saved.

I answered, puzzled, and immediately heard the mocking tone in his voice. "I'm sure you've already seen Cynthia's post, so I might as well tell you the truth. I faked my death. Cynthia knew about it too. The whole point was to force you into divorcing her so you'd have to give her half your assets.

"Oh, and thanks for taking care of her for me all these years. You spoiled her rotten. You should've seen how seductive she was when she begged for me. She's a slut, and you're an idiot. Honestly, you two are pretty well matched."

My grip tightened around the phone until my knuckles turned white. I pressed my lips together and said nothing while Grant laughed mockingly.

It turned out Cynthia had staged this entire performance just to force me into divorcing her. No wonder she had shown up to our wedding in mourning clothes, then signed the divorce papers without the slightest hesitation. She had never given me even the tiniest bit of love.

All this time, she had simply treated me like a fool.

Grant laughed arrogantly on the other end of the line. He was mocking me for being stupid enough to play the sucker, supporting his woman for him while still handing over half my fortune.

At first, I felt a lump of anger lodged in my chest, but after thinking it through, it gradually faded. 'You want my money? Dream on!'

Cynthia had always acted as though she were above worldly possessions. When I sent over the divorce agreement, she had signed her name without even bothering to look at it.

Then again, even if she read the papers, she could not do anything. I had evidence of her infidelity and everything else she had done wrong. I had an entire stack of records documenting her hotel stays with Grant alone.

If she thought she could have a share of my assets while being the unfaithful party… Even though it was the middle of the night, that was one hell of a dream.

"Didn't you go through it with Cynthia? She thinks she's better than me, so she refused my assets and claimed they're garbage. I heard she looked disgusted when she signed the papers. She's after true love, you know. Apparently, she doesn't care about money or material things.

"Thanks, buddy, for taking that fickle woman off my hands. I'd been contemplating how to deal with that headache, and you ended up doing me a favor. You must feel quite accomplished, this being the one charitable thing you've done since birth."

I was telling him nothing but the truth, yet Grant suddenly fell silent.

"Hey, buddy, still there?" I asked. "Anyway, I wish you two star-crossed lovers a lifetime of happiness together. Stay together forever and don't come out to ruin anyone else's life."

…

The next second, I heard something crash to the floor on the other end of the line. The impact was deafening, as though he had just unleashed all the fury boiling inside him.

I could not help but snort.

I genuinely could not understand what Cynthia had ever seen in a useless man who wanted to build his fortune by living off a woman. Also, I would like to see how she and her family would maintain their luxurious lifestyle without my money.

With that, I called my assistant and told him to take a housekeeper to the new marital home I had recently purchased and remove every single one of Cynthia's belongings. Then, I called the nursing home, told them to stop making the payments, and asked the director to have the two old parasites thrown out.

Finally, there was Cynthia's brother. He had been the one driving when he hit someone, and he had fled the scene afterward, which constituted a criminal offense. I handed the police the surveillance footage of the hit-and-run, along with the truth that he had eventually panicked and confessed to me himself.

Back then, I had taken the blame for him for no reason, even paying money to calm the victim's family down. Thankfully, the victim had not been seriously injured. Otherwise, her brother would have been done for.

After taking care of everything, I pulled the covers over myself and slept soundly through the night.

…

The next morning, I returned to the office.

I had just started a meeting with all the employees in the conference room when Cynthia's parents burst in with a large group of relatives.

"Look, he even hit me!" Cynthia turned her injured face toward me, deliberately showing me her wounds. But I remained completely unmoved. I simply stared at her before stepping back with Jocelyn, clearly disgusted. "Ms. Brooke, we're already divorced. There's nothing between us anymore. Whatever difficulties you have from now on, please deal with them with someone else. They have nothing to do with me."Cynthia's body stiffened.Only then did she notice that I was holding Jocelyn's hand. She finally realized that when I said I no longer loved her, I had meant every word.Panicking, she reached out as though she wanted to touch me, but I pulled a stern face and snapped at her. "Please show some respect, ma'am. I already have a girlfriend. Are you trying to make yourself a mistress?"I let out a cold laugh.Cynthia's face had gone completely pale. Her hair was disheveled, and there were still wounds on her face. She had long since lost the radiance she once possessed. Without my pa

Cynthia had been pushed over the edge by what she had just witnessed. She glared viciously at the wealthy woman. "Shut up! You have no right to run your mouth here, you fat pig!"The scene felt eerily familiar.A month ago, Cynthia and Grant had treated me exactly the same way. Now the tables had turned, and it was finally her turn to experience what it felt like to be humiliated and discarded. So instead of going inside to help her, I simply remained outside, watching the two of them tear each other apart. The moment Grant heard Cynthia call the woman in his arms a "fat pig," he released the woman, walked over to Cynthia, grabbed her by the hair, and yanked her up before striking her hard across the face again."You only have your incompetence to blame. I only stayed with you for so long because I thought you'd get half of your husband's fortune once you divorced him. But you're an idiot who walked away with nothing! What use do I have for you then?"Did you really think you wer

She stared at me with undisguised contempt. "Of course I'm going to find him. Just wait and see. Grant and I are going to live happily ever after!"I had not wanted to keep arguing with Cynthia either, but her arrogance made me decide to help her see just how much her so-called true love was really worth."You said Grant loved you more than anything?""That's right!""Come with me. Tell Grant that you walked away from the marriage with nothing—not even a marital home—and see if he still loves you afterward."I grabbed my car keys and walked out first. Although Cynthia looked confused, she still followed me.The sports car roared to life. Soon we were speeding toward our destination, leaving a trail of dust behind us.Neither of us said a word the entire journey. It was pin-drop silence. After a while, Cynthia's ringtone shattered the silence. It was Grant calling. Her expression softened immediately, and her voice grew sweet and gentle. "Grant, did you miss me—what? You're goi

I quickly caught her wrist and forcefully shoved her away."You're absolutely insane! How can you call the cops on my brother? Fuck you!""What? Cynthia, what happened?"Cynthia gave her mother the full story, and then the two immediately hurled insults at me. But I ignored every word and simply looked at the bunch of lunatics in front of me.I honestly could not understand what I had been thinking back then. How had I ever fallen in love with a woman like her?But I needed to resolve this quickly. I could not let them damage the company's reputation. If they insisted I had gone crazy and caused all this trouble, I would show them exactly what crazy looked like."Cynthia, I never wanted to make things this ugly. I even wanted to leave you some dignity. But you kept digging your own grave and pushing me further and further. Your brother did a hit-and-run and tried to make me take the blame for him. You cheated on me, yet you claimed I'd betrayed you first. Well, I'll be a fool if

Cynthia's mother in particular looked like a venomous snake. The hatred in her eyes was so intense that she looked as though she wanted to tear me to pieces. When I saw those two parasites, I turned grim, for I knew exactly why they had come. The conference room fell into deathly silence. The employees all held their breath, not daring to make a sound. They all knew how much I had indulged Cynthia's parents in the past. I had even let her brother into the company through connections and special treatment. That man clearly did not have what it took to be a designer, yet he had forced his way into the position anyway. Once, while I was away on a business trip, he had used his status as the CEO's brother-in-law to fire an actual designer and take over the job himself. He had turned my company upside down, leaving the employees furious and constantly complaining. Eventually, I could not take it anymore and fired him, only for Cynthia to storm into my office and demand an explanation.
