Chapter 3

Author: Luna Starling
Travis Luther’s expression turned colder.

“Do you really have to be this unreasonable? I already explained everything—what more do you want?”

Nora was losing patience. “Just read the divorce agreement and sign it as soon as possible. Otherwise, we’ll settle it through the court.”

With that, she turned and headed upstairs.

Travis watched her walk away, an unshakable frustration churning in his chest.

In his mind, he had already compromised enough. Over the years, he’d never shortchanged Nora—she’d always had the lifestyle, the title, the comfort.

And now, over something so trivial, she wanted to blow up the whole marriage? It was ridiculous.

Still, Nora had been acting strangely these past few days—saying things she never would have dared say before. She was sharper, colder. Different.

Travis took a sip of tea, forcing himself to stay calm. He finally went upstairs to talk it out—only to freeze the moment he stepped into the bedroom.

The bed was perfectly made.

The closet door was open.

All of Nora’s clothes were gone.

She’d moved out of their room?

His temper flared instantly. Without a word, he spun around and stormed off.

Down the hall, Nora heard the door slam. She didn’t flinch. She was busy setting up the guest bed, folding sheets with quiet precision.

Later that night, a knock at the door woke her.

She opened it to find Quinton curled up on the floor, pale-faced and drenched in cold sweat.

“Mommy… my stomach really hurts. I’ve been having diarrhea… it won’t stop…”

Quinton had always had a sensitive stomach. He couldn’t eat greasy, salty, spicy, or cold foods—just a little out of balance, and his body would react.

Nora had always been the one to manage his diet. She’d pored over recipes, researched food therapy, adjusted dishes to help his digestion.

And when he hated the bland taste? She’d try new ways to coax him into eating more.

But yesterday, Lily had taken him to the amusement park and let him eat fried chicken, burgers, fries, and ice cream. Classic kid junk food.

She even posted photos—Quinton had looked thrilled.

Travis had been there too, and of course, he hadn’t stopped any of it.

“Mommy…”

Quinton’s voice weakened. He reached out for her, grabbing at the hem of her shirt.

Nora quietly stepped aside.

His hand hung in the air, frozen. He stared at her, stunned.

Without a word, she picked up her phone and called for an ambulance.

When it arrived, she helped Quinton onto the stretcher.

He clung tightly to her shirt, tears welling up.

“Mommy… aren’t you coming with me?”

Nora gently pried his fingers loose. Her voice was calm.

“I already called Lily. She’ll be there soon. Didn’t you say you wanted her to be your mom?”

Quinton looked at her, lost. He tried to respond, but another wave of pain overtook him before he could speak.

The sirens faded as the ambulance drove away.

Nora shut the door and went back to bed.

She had already arranged for the movers to come at ten in the morning.

Whether Travis signed the papers or not, she was leaving this house.

The sooner, the better.

The exchange program in the UK was only two months away.

She’d never been expected to work—Travis had made that clear.

“You don’t need a job,” he’d once said. “Just focus on raising our son.”

But once Quinton started preschool, Nora had time. She’d studied design in college and had been freelancing online for two years, gradually building experience.

The UK opportunity?

She’d won it in a design competition.

It was her prize.

Last time, thanks to Lily, she never got to go.

But this time, she would.

She was done relying on anyone else. The only way forward was to grow stronger on her own.

At seven sharp, Nora got up and headed to the kitchen.

She stirred a small pot of plain oatmeal, adding a bit of honey to soften the taste.

Before it finished cooking, footsteps thundered in from the living room.

Travis stormed in, radiating anger.

“Quinton had acute gastroenteritis last night—and you just left him alone at the hospital?!”

Nora lifted the lid of the pot and stirred.

“I called Lily,” she said calmly, turning to look at him.

“But Quinton wanted you,” Travis snapped. “He kept crying for his mom! He was in so much pain! Even if you’re jealous, you don’t take it out on a child. Nora, are you even a mother anymore?”

Nora exhaled slowly, her gaze steady and flat.

“If I’m not a mother, then are you a father?

“You don’t even remember that he has dietary restrictions. You didn’t stop him from eating junk that could make him sick. What right do you have to lecture me?”

Her voice wasn’t loud. It was calm and matter-of-fact, with no trace of accusation—

But it hit like a slap.

Travis stood there, momentarily speechless, as if someone had squeezed the air out of his lungs.

After a long pause, he muttered,

“I didn’t know… You should’ve told me.”

Nora cut him off, her tone bone-chilling.

“You think I didn’t? I told you—so many times. Too bad you never listened.”

Eric let out a laugh at Travis’s words. “You feel bad? Have you ever thought about what you did to Nora?”He said it on purpose. He wanted Travis to know Nora could be fine without him.The bait worked. When Eric spoke, Travis’s eyes flashed cold with fury.“I’m talking to my child’s mother—what business is it of yours? Did Nora actually admit you’re her boyfriend?”“How dare he talk like he’s her boyfriend?” Travis thought angrily. And Nora—had she just accepted it? Quietly acknowledged it?She’d completely given up on their child and walked away? Even after he’d handed her Eric’s full background report, she’d acted like none of it mattered.Rage burned in Travis’s chest. In that moment he wanted to crush Nora and Eric both.Eric ignored the warning in Travis’s stare and kept going, slow and sharp. “I’m just speaking the truth. When you went off and licked another woman’s boots with your son in tow, did you ever stop to think about Nora’s feelings?”“Nora, you care about them,

Nora trembled uncontrollably in Eric’s arms, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.Eric held her close, one hand gently stroking her back while his eyes scanned the area, sharp and furious. His jaw tightened as he searched for whoever had pushed her.But there was no one, only a few shocked onlookers whispering among themselves, eyes wide from what they’d just witnessed. The attacker had vanished.Who did this?! Eric’s thoughts roared in fury.He knew without a doubt this hadn’t been an accident. Someone had meant to kill her.Meanwhile, down the corridor, Travis was walking absently beside Quinton, lost in his own thoughts.Suddenly, Quinton stopped, tugging on his father’s sleeve. “Dad, I think I heard Mom! It sounded like she was in trouble, can we go check?”Travis blinked, snapping out of his daze. For a moment he hesitated. Showing up again might not be right—but what if something really had happened to Nora? One look at his son’s worried little face decided it for h

Quinton could feel the tension in the room. He ran over to Eric and tugged at his hand, looking up with wide, tearful eyes. “Uncle, I just want to see my mom. Please… I just miss her.”Eric froze. The anger in his chest dulled as he looked at the boy’s innocent face. He took a steadying breath before turning to Travis.“She’s still very weak,” Eric said quietly but firmly. “Any emotional shock could hurt her recovery. If you truly care about her, then leave for her sake.”Travis’s jaw tightened. Conflict flickered across his face, his eyes drifting toward the doorway as if he could somehow see through it to Nora. His lips parted, but no words came out.Beside him, Quinton clung to his father’s sleeve, voice trembling. “But I really miss Mom…”Eric’s heart clenched at the sight. For a split second, sympathy stirred but the thought of Nora’s fragile state forced him to harden again.Travis crouched down and gently wiped the tears from his son’s cheeks. “It’s okay, buddy,” he said h

By the lakeside, Eric stopped by a wooden bench and sat down beside Nora. Together, they watched the sunlight ripple across the water.“It’s beautiful here,” Nora murmured softly.Eric was about to respond when, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted two familiar figures in the distance. They were Travis and little Quinton. They were carrying a bag of fruit, walking quickly toward the hospital building.A sharp pang of tension cut through Eric’s chest. The last thing Nora needed right now was to see Travis and be thrown into emotional turmoil. Her recovery was still fragile, and any shock could set her back. With practiced calm, he subtly turned the wheelchair, angling it away from the path where Travis was passing. Then he stood, his tall frame deliberately blocking Nora’s line of sight.Nora noticed the movement and blinked, puzzled. “What is it, Eric?”He smiled, his voice gentle. “Nothing. The sunlight’s just a little too bright from that direction. Let me block it for you.

The delivery man scratched his head. “It was a black van. Looked a little old, but the windows were all covered with dark tint. You couldn’t see who was inside.”Eric jotted down every detail on his phone, his expression growing darker by the second. His pulse pounded with fury. There was no longer any doubt—this hadn’t been an accident. It was a calculated attempt on Nora’s life.He left the café in haste, his thoughts churning as he drove back to the hospital. Every face, every motive he could think of flashed through his mind, piecing together a web of possibilities. When he stepped through the hospital doors, he felt a sliver of relief seeing the bodyguards he’d stationed outside Room 302, alert and ready. At least she was safe—for now.Inside the room, Nora sat propped up on the bed, flipping through a magazine. When she heard the door open, her eyes lit up instantly. “You’re back. How did it go?”Eric walked quickly to her side and took her hand. “It was about the crash inv

Nora smiled faintly. “If it weren’t for you cheering me on every day, I don’t think I’d have made this much progress.”“That’s all you,” Eric said, eyes warm with pride. “You’re stronger than I ever imagined.”“By the way,” Nora asked curiously, “has anything happened while I’ve been stuck in here?”Eric hesitated for a moment before answering, “Nothing major. You just focus on getting better. Leave everything else to me.”“Alright,” she said softly. “With you here, I feel safe.”Eric’s chest tightened at her words. He leaned down and brushed a gentle kiss against her forehead. “Get some rest. I need to step out for a bit, but I’ll be back soon.”Nora nodded obediently. The moment Eric stepped into the hallway, his phone rang. He answered quickly—it was his assistant, the one he’d assigned to investigate the crash.“Mr. Woods,” the assistant said, excitement in his tone, “we found an eyewitness to the accident.”“Who?” Eric’s voice sharpened instantly.“A delivery driver who
