Chapter 2

Author: White Warbler
Dylan slammed on the brakes, his voice tense. "Where are you? Send me your location."

He kept talking as he reached over with one hand and unbuckled my seat belt.

"Take a cab home."

We were far outside the city. There were no streetlights, no cell service, and no one around.

How was I supposed to get a cab out here?

I didn't even have time to react before he pushed me out of the car. The door slammed shut, and his taillights soon vanished into the fog.

I walked the dirt road in the dark for a long time. By the time I got home, my ankles were raw and bleeding from my high heels.

Dylan never once checked on me, not even with a text asking if I was okay.

Meanwhile, Jessica posted three new updates in a row. The first showed Dylan in an apron, cooking for Jessica.

Her caption read, "Seven years later, I finally get to eat his cooking again."

The second showed Dylan down on one knee, washing Jessica's feet.

"My personal masseur is on duty."

The third showed them asleep in each other's arms, wearing matching bathrobes.

"I fell asleep counting his heartbeats. I'm so happy."

After seven years of keeping our relationship secret, I still had no idea Dylan could cook or give massages. He'd never held me like that, either.

So it wasn't that he didn't do those things. He just didn't do them for me.

I went through the posts again and again, liking every single one as if I were punishing myself. With every like, my heart sank a little further until I couldn't feel the hurt anymore.

I told myself it didn't matter. It would all be over anyway.

When morning came, I made some soup and went to the hospital to see Mom. The moment I opened the door, I found someone I hadn't expected to see.

Jessica was sitting beside Mom's bed, chatting happily with her.

Mom held Jessica's hand and smiled. "Ashley, look who's here. You used to bring her over all the time in high school. It's sweet of her to still think of me."

Jessica was in a tight mini dress with spaghetti straps. Suggestive red marks trailed from her collarbone across her chest and onto her arms. The marks looked openly provocative, almost like a silent challenge.

The bracelet on her wrist was even harder to ignore. It was from the brand's latest collection.

I'd found it in Dylan's pocket the week before and thought it was a surprise for me. Now I knew it had been meant for someone else.

I froze, my chest tightening.

I didn't want to see Jessica, but I couldn't think of any reason to ask her to leave.

Mom said, "Jessica came back planning to marry her boyfriend, only to find out he'd been seeing another woman behind her back. I've always hated irresponsible men and homewreckers. Jessica, I'm on your side!"

Jessica gave me a taunting smile, even as her eyes reddened.

"Thank you, Mrs. Keller. That's all I needed to hear."

Jessica pulled out her phone and opened her photo gallery. "Mrs. Keller, this is my boyfriend. What do you think? Handsome, right?"

Mom glanced at the screen, and her face went white.

Jessica smiled smugly. "Didn't see that coming, did you? Ashley's the other woman."

Mom shook her head frantically, her lips trembling uncontrollably. Then her eyes shut, and she collapsed.

It all happened so fast that I didn't have time to react. I hit the call button over and over on instinct.

A doctor rushed in. "She was under severe emotional stress. Blood flow to her brain was interrupted. We need to stabilize her immediately!"

We were sent out of the procedure room.

Furious, I raised my hand to slap Jessica, but she caught my wrist before I could. As we struggled, she glanced over my shoulder. She suddenly grabbed my hand and slapped herself across the face with it.

"Jessica!"

A figure rushed over and caught her.

The slap was so hard my palm went numb.

Dylan glared at me. "Ashley Keller, apologize!"

I scoffed. "Apologize? Fine!"

I walked up to Jessica and slapped her again, this time as hard as I could.

Mom was about to have a brain tumor removed. She couldn't take any kind of emotional shock, and Jessica had to know that. She'd done it on purpose.

Caught off guard, Jessica clutched her swollen cheek and stared at me in disbelief. She looked both humiliated and furious.

Dylan lost it and kicked me hard in the stomach. The blow sent me flying into the corner.

Warm blood trickled between my thighs, and a bright red stain spread.

He seemed to regret it almost immediately and started toward me, but Jessica grabbed him.

"Dylan, my face hurts so much," she cried.

He turned back to her. "Don't worry. I'll take you to get checked out."

I finally realized that not every relationship felt the same. In all seven years with Dylan, he had never done any of these things for me.He never told me anything unless I asked. I was always the one waiting, asking, and guessing. On the rare occasions he bothered to message me, I'd be happy all day.He never once introduced me as his girlfriend. It was always just, "This is Ashley Keller," said so casually that I might as well have been nobody important.I was always the one waiting for Dylan to show up. Whether we were meeting at a restaurant, a hotel, or the airport, he was usually late. I never dared ask him to hurry, afraid he'd say I was being unreasonable. He didn't even know I was allergic to seafood. Once, at a group dinner, he ordered crab for practically the entire meal. I didn't touch any of it, and he just assumed I was dieting. All those small, ordinary things, good and bad, had built up so slowly that I barely noticed until they became overwhelming.I wasn't tryi

A week later, Nathan and I sat across from each other at a small restaurant in Caldrane.I got straight to the point. "Nathan, thank you."He looked up in surprise. "For what? If you mean covering the medical bills, don't worry about it. It was nothing."I smiled. "Remember when I asked you to give me some time at the reunion? I have my answer now."Nathan looked at me intently, though he was clearly nervous. "So what's your answer?""Yes. I want to give this a chance."He nearly dropped his fork. "What about Dylan?""We broke up. I want a fresh start. If you still want to be with me and don't mind that I spent seven years in a secret relationship, then I'd like to see where this goes."I couldn't tell him I knew he'd been paying for Mom's treatment all these years. If I told him, he might think I was only saying yes to repay him.Nathan smiled. "So you don't mind that I'm broke and just a supervisor at a small company?"I couldn't help laughing. When I first met Nathan, I h

My words caught Dylan off guard. For a long moment, he couldn't make sense of what I meant. He had no idea what money I was talking about or what lie I was accusing him of.It took him a while to piece it together. After all, he'd spent ten years in business and was far too sharp to miss what I was implying. He pulled out his phone and called Amanda Fisher, the company's CFO."Pull the transfer records for every payment made toward Mrs. Keller's medical expenses over the past seven years. Print them and send them to me."As soon as Amanda hung up, she called her cousin, Jessica."Jessica, we've got a serious problem. Mr. Tate wants the transfer records for Mrs. Keller's medical expenses. What do I do?"Jessica forced herself to stay calm. "Don't panic. Stick to the plan."Ten minutes later, Dylan received an email containing seven years of transfer records. He went through the records transaction by transaction, then forwarded the file to the legal department."Look into this.

Dylan coming to Marovia didn't surprise me. I hadn't blocked him or tried to hide from him. When someone no longer mattered to you, there was no reason to do either.I scoffed. "What do you want?"He'd sounded tough at first, but I was even colder, and for a moment he didn't know what to say. Finally, he managed, "How's your mom?""That's none of your business."His tone softened. "Let's meet and talk in person.""There's no need. I'm hanging up.""If you're angry about the baby, that's not fair. I didn't even know you were pregnant. Why didn't you tell me?"I hung up before he could finish. The line went dead again, and Dylan's stomach dropped.Furious, he called his assistant. "Find out where Ashley is staying in Marovia. I want the address now."Ten minutes later, his assistant sent him my hotel address. It was 11:00 pm when I got back to the hotel from the hospital.A figure suddenly rushed out of the darkness and wrapped his arms tightly around me. I knew that scent i

Inside the box was the embryonic tissue I'd brought back from the hospital, in a sealed specimen container. Beneath it was the report confirming my miscarriage.Dylan suddenly remembered the day Jessica and I had clashed. He'd kicked me without thinking. He'd thought he hadn't kicked me very hard, but the blow had sent me crashing into the corner. Blood had soaked through my pants. He'd panicked and started toward me, but Jessica distracted him. Later, after taking her to get checked out, he'd meant to come back. Then Jessica suggested it might just be my period, so he let it go.He never imagined that kick had killed his own child. Regret, guilt, pain, and despair burned through him, nearly consuming him.Dylan called me again. Just as he'd expected, I didn't answer.Still grieving and angry, he suddenly remembered hearing the airport announcement for a flight to Marovia. He called Mom's doctor right away."Dr. Lane, how is Mrs. Keller doing?""She's already been transferred t

  • She Never Looked Back   Chapter 5

By the time Dylan got back from dropping Jessica off at the airport, it was already late. Oddly, after seeing her off, he found himself feeling a little down and had a few drinks. He'd considered going to the hospital, but he worried I would notice something was off and start making snide remarks. In the end, he decided not to go.The mansion was completely dark except for a light in the staff quarters downstairs.Dylan switched on the light by the stairs and headed up. When he reached the second floor, Edward Scott, the longtime butler, called to him."Mr. Tate, Ms. Keller left something for you."Dylan looked surprised. "Ashley came back?""Yes."He took the small black gift box from Edward. It was tied with a dark red ribbon, and the whole thing had a somber, heavy look. For some reason, his heart felt heavy the moment he took it. It wasn't an anniversary or a birthday, and there was nothing special about the day."Did Ashley say what this was for?"Edward shook his head.
