Chapter 2

Autor: Sweetie Moore
Stacy's cruel words had hurt me deeply over the years.

Yet, I heard the admiration in her thoughts.

"Zack's a smart one. He knows how to keep Jake from leaving. I'll give him another bonus later!"

It was so ridiculous that I actually laughed.

Zack was clearly mocking me, but Stacy didn't seem to realize it at all.

I didn't want to say anything more, so I turned around and walked away.

Stacy immediately grew anxious.

She stepped forward, grabbed my arm, and said impatiently, "Why are you getting so upset? I just told you off a little. That's all. Haven't you always wanted a promotion? I…"

As she spoke, Stacy finally held out the vice president appointment letter. The paper was wrinkled from how tightly she had been clutching it.

I frowned.

Just as I was about to turn her down, Zack snatched the appointment letter from her.

He unfolded it, and then covered his mouth.

Zack exclaimed with shameless delight, "Ms. Levine, you just promoted me to manager, and now you're making me vice president too?

"Isn't this happening a little too fast? People are going to have something to say about it."

He tried to sound modest, but the smug look on his face made it clear how pleased he was with himself.

Stacy curled her fingers slightly, but she said nothing to correct him.

I could hear her fuming inside, her thoughts growing increasingly frustrated.

"I've already swallowed my pride, and Jake is still giving me attitude. He won't even comfort me! Fine. I'll give the appointment to Zack and make Jake jealous. Maybe that will teach Jake a lesson!"

When Stacy stayed silent, everyone looked delighted by what they were seeing. They started clapping and cheering all at once.

After all, Stacy was usually fair with everyone, but things with Zack were different. She was always calling him into her office to whisper about things, and everyone had noticed.

However, I wasn't going to get jealous or make a scene anymore.

Amid the buzz of voices, I turned around and pulled out the paperwork I had prepared in advance. I went straight to Human Resources to submit my resignation.

They handled it quickly. Within minutes, I was removed from the employee group chat.

As I left the office and passed the restroom, I heard Stacy's sweet, petulant voice.

She complained, "This is all your fault. You said bringing him down first would make the surprise more exciting. Now you've only made him angry!

"He actually talked about quitting today. What are we supposed to do now?"

I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

Whenever Stacy spoke to me, her tone was always icy and full of sarcasm. Only her thoughts ever sounded this sweet and coy.

A moment later, I heard someone kick the wall. The sharp clack sounded like a high heel had struck it.

Then the person Stacy was talking to finally spoke, his voice full of affection and helplessness.

"I don't know either. Maybe Mr. Sawyer has always had a problem with us."

Sure enough, it was Zack.

After a brief pause, he added, "Don't worry, Ms. Levine. I'm only taking the vice president position to protect the company's reputation. It'll always belong to Jacob.

"The moment he asks for it, I'll give it back to him right away!"

I lowered my eyes, and a mocking smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.

Zack really knew how to play his cards. He knew I would never lower myself by asking him for the position, which meant he could keep enjoying the benefits for himself.

I had thought Zack was too calculating from the moment we interviewed him, but Stacy insisted on going against me. She made no secret of how much she admired him.

Zack was also the only person in the company who knew about my relationship with Stacy. Yet he was always provoking me, either openly or behind my back, and finding ways to trip me up.

That was the final thing that made me give up on my marriage to Stacy.

For five years, I had watched Stacy say one thing while feeling another. Sometimes, I couldn't help wishing she would just tell me how she really felt.

But she would always coldly insist that she meant everything she said and did. She would claim she had nothing to say.

Stacy never wanted to open up to me.

Yet she told Zack everything, even though she'd only known him for less than six months.

What mattered was how she treated me, not what she claimed to feel inside.

Even if Stacy truly loved me, five years of being targeted, worn down, and pushed around had already taken more out of me than I could bear.

From now on, I would never let her use me as an emotional crutch or allow her to keep taking everything out of me.

Belle didn't seem bothered. "Fine. I'll just treat her like a joke."As if to prove her point, Stacy stopped trying to rebuild her company. Whenever she had nothing else to do, she would wait outside Sidman Group and block my way in.Whenever Belle saw her, the two would inevitably clash. After Stacy sent me another expensive watch, I realized my desk drawer was already too full to hold anything else. When Belle saw my overflowing drawer, her frown deepened."Why are you keeping all this stuff instead of throwing it away?" she asked. "Don't tell me you really want to get back together with Stacy. I'd lose all respect for you."I said helplessly, "They're all valuable. I'll send them back once she gets tired of this."Belle paused, then suddenly said, "Jacob, I'm giving you some time off. This can't keep going. It's going to affect your work."Even though I repeatedly assured her that it wouldn't affect my work, Belle still sent me home right away. But maybe that was for the be

"Jake, what am I supposed to do? I have nothing left. What do I do now? Why is everyone leaving me? Didn't you all say you'd always spoil me?"Seeing Stacy like this, anyone would have felt a little sympathy for her.But I could only let out a long sigh.I wasn't some kind of savior, and I couldn't save someone as emotionally fragile as Stacy. After paying my respects at Martha's grave, I calmly said to Stacy, "I told you before that your mental health was in bad shape. You need professional help, and you really should see a therapist."Her expression darkened. She stared at me and asked through clenched teeth, "You think I'm crazy?"I frowned. Before I could say anything, she grabbed my arm tightly and demanded, "Jacob, tell me why! You know what I'm thinking, and you know I love you. So why are you still leaving me?"Zack said all the right things, but he secretly transferred company assets out and forced me to put the company up for auction."Why can't I ever have someone w

Belle stared at me in disbelief, clearly shocked. "You're divorcing Stacy? Are you serious?"It suddenly hit me that Belle hadn't been there when I told Stacy I wanted a divorce. She had no idea what had happened. So I answered matter-of-factly, "Yeah."Belle couldn't stop the corners of her mouth from lifting. She covered her mouth with a fist and gave a small cough."You love Stacy so much. You'd better think this through," she said.My gaze was steady. "I'm sure."Lunch was relaxed and pleasant.…After that day, Stacy didn't contact me either.I heard that once she returned to the company, she realized the bid she had won at a huge loss had left her scrambling to keep things running. She was practically living at the office every day, trying to deal with the mess. Belle and I exchanged a helpless look and got up to leave. But Stacy blocked our way, still holding the bid proposal. She raised her brows with a smug look in her eyes and waved the proposal at Belle, smiling.Stacy said, "Belle, I won. What are you going to do about it now?"Her thoughts were full of excitement."Did you see that, Jake? I'm way better than Belle. Come back to me now. Don't let her fool you!"Stacy and Zack looked so pleased with themselves.Clearly, Zack was too busy trying to read Stacy's mind to realize that winning the bid at this price meant taking a huge loss. He actually thought he had won.Belle wasn't about to put up with Stacy's nonsense. She crossed her arms and said casually, "I wasn't even competing with you, but somehow you 'won' again. Stacy, can you stop tailing me?"I knew those words had hit a very sensitive spot for Stacy. She had always been the one who lost her composure over Belle's words.Stacy was so angry that she started trembling.

"Thank goodness I have Zack to help me figure things out. Jake really is trying to fool me! I knew it had to be that tramp, Belle. She'd do anything to win the bid!" Stacy thought.Thinking this, she put on her usual haughty attitude and disdainfully tossed the divorce papers into my arms."Jacob, tell Belle that winning the bid takes real skill. Don't even think about using dirty tricks!"After saying that, she stole a cautious glance at me and licked her lips. I knew she always did that when she was nervous. The next moment, she cleared her throat and said, "Well, Jacob, if you come back to me now, I might consider giving you a little promotion. You could be a manager."Before I could say anything, a clear female voice came from behind me. "A manager? Stacy, who are you looking down on?"Next thing I knew, Belle walked up beside me. She was dressed in a sleek business dress. She swept her dark hair back and said icily, "Jacob is Sidman Group's vice president, and you want him
