Chapter 4

Autor: Sweetie Moore
Stacy would never chase after me.

Her thoughts were filled with smugness. "Jake has always been attached to me. He'll definitely come running back within three hours."

I silently told myself, "I'm never going back. Not in this lifetime."

…

The next day, I was at Sidman Group, buried in paperwork.

My phone lit up with a message from Stacy, demanding an explanation.

"Jacob, where are you? You skipped work without permission. I'm cutting your pay in half this month."

I scoffed and ignored her.

Didn't she know I quit yesterday? What a stupid question.

That evening, she unexpectedly messaged me again just as I was leaving work.

"It's Grandma's birthday today. She insisted I invite you. Come if you want."

My grip tightened around my phone.

Stacy usually bossed me around and mocked me, but her grandmother, Martha Thorne, had always treated me well. Martha was a gentle, caring woman.

So I replied with a simple "Okay".

But when I hurried to the mansion, I saw Stacy with her arm linked through Zack's. They were surrounded by guests, drinking and mingling.

I had always been the one who accompanied Stacy to these events. Now, I was suddenly in an incredibly awkward position.

Everyone looked at me at once and covered their mouths as they laughed.

Stacy gently lowered the arm she had linked with Zack's. She lifted her chin with a proud look on her face, as if waiting for others to come talk to her.

But her group of friends came over first and started teasing me.

"Well, well, Jacob. How come you didn't wear that ridiculous mascot costume today? Or did seeing a handsome young guy like Zack make you feel threatened?"

I lowered my eyes to hide my emotions.

Before, I had gone out of my way to give Stacy the romance she loved. On her birthday, I planned a surprise for her. I dressed up as a mascot, brought her flowers and cake, and even danced for her.

I had stomach problems, yet I went days without eating while planning that surprise for her. All I wanted was her approval.

Instead, she called me a fool for putting on a ridiculous show. She said I had done it all for nothing in front of her friends.

By the time I came to my senses, Stacy was standing in front of me. I didn't even know when she had walked over.

She snapped, "Jacob, why are you just standing there? Go get me a piece of cake. You're not even half as perceptive as Zack."

Zack was carrying a tray filled with fruit, cookies, and other small snacks.

He shot me a spiteful look and said in a sweet, almost childish tone, "Jacob is the model husband everyone wants, after all. It's only normal for him to be a little proud.

"I'll take care of these little chores."

Stacy frowned.

From the way things were going, I knew Stacy was about to show off how well she had trained me and see if I would obey her.

But this time, I didn't even spare her a glance. I turned and walked into the courtyard.

There weren't many people in the courtyard. Moonlight shone over the fountain in the middle, and the water glimmered.

With a click, I flicked open my lighter. I cupped my hand around the flame and lit a cigarette. The smoke curling around me slowly calmed me down.

Just then, several mocking laughs broke the silence.

Two other rich young men who had also come out to smoke looked at me with disdain.

"What the hell is that smell? Who even smokes this stuff? Well, well, if it isn't Ms. Levine's favorite little suck-up. Why don't you ask her to get you a better brand of cigarettes?"

"You didn't know? Jacob has spent years trying to please Ms. Levine. He couldn't do more to win her over if he tried.

"But after all those years, look where it got him. Some younger guy still got to her first!"

If this had happened in the past, I definitely would have been angry.

But now, I merely smiled and said calmly, "You make a fair point. Sometimes, you really should know when to let go."

Before I could finish, the two men went pale. They swallowed hard and looked behind me.

I turned to look too.

Stacy stood beneath the covered walkway, her slender figure still. I had no idea how long she had been there.

Her expression was icy.

Both men thought Stacy was angry. They didn't even dare to breathe too loudly.

Belle didn't seem bothered. "Fine. I'll just treat her like a joke."As if to prove her point, Stacy stopped trying to rebuild her company. Whenever she had nothing else to do, she would wait outside Sidman Group and block my way in.Whenever Belle saw her, the two would inevitably clash. After Stacy sent me another expensive watch, I realized my desk drawer was already too full to hold anything else. When Belle saw my overflowing drawer, her frown deepened."Why are you keeping all this stuff instead of throwing it away?" she asked. "Don't tell me you really want to get back together with Stacy. I'd lose all respect for you."I said helplessly, "They're all valuable. I'll send them back once she gets tired of this."Belle paused, then suddenly said, "Jacob, I'm giving you some time off. This can't keep going. It's going to affect your work."Even though I repeatedly assured her that it wouldn't affect my work, Belle still sent me home right away. But maybe that was for the be

"Jake, what am I supposed to do? I have nothing left. What do I do now? Why is everyone leaving me? Didn't you all say you'd always spoil me?"Seeing Stacy like this, anyone would have felt a little sympathy for her.But I could only let out a long sigh.I wasn't some kind of savior, and I couldn't save someone as emotionally fragile as Stacy. After paying my respects at Martha's grave, I calmly said to Stacy, "I told you before that your mental health was in bad shape. You need professional help, and you really should see a therapist."Her expression darkened. She stared at me and asked through clenched teeth, "You think I'm crazy?"I frowned. Before I could say anything, she grabbed my arm tightly and demanded, "Jacob, tell me why! You know what I'm thinking, and you know I love you. So why are you still leaving me?"Zack said all the right things, but he secretly transferred company assets out and forced me to put the company up for auction."Why can't I ever have someone w

Belle stared at me in disbelief, clearly shocked. "You're divorcing Stacy? Are you serious?"It suddenly hit me that Belle hadn't been there when I told Stacy I wanted a divorce. She had no idea what had happened. So I answered matter-of-factly, "Yeah."Belle couldn't stop the corners of her mouth from lifting. She covered her mouth with a fist and gave a small cough."You love Stacy so much. You'd better think this through," she said.My gaze was steady. "I'm sure."Lunch was relaxed and pleasant.…After that day, Stacy didn't contact me either.I heard that once she returned to the company, she realized the bid she had won at a huge loss had left her scrambling to keep things running. She was practically living at the office every day, trying to deal with the mess. Belle grew angrier as she spoke. Then she grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the bidding venue.I was still a little stunned as I looked down at her tense profile. I followed right behind her without putting up a fight. So this was what it felt like having someone to stand up for me. It felt great.Belle and I hadn't seen each other many times. Most of those meetings had been at business gatherings.Because Stacy and Belle didn't get along, I barely spoke to Belle. When I decided to leave Stacy and approached Belle about joining her company, I expected her to either tear into me or turn me down.Instead, Belle reached out to me herself. She told me she had always admired my work and was looking forward to having me on her team. For some reason, I felt a little emotional.Belle was still angry when she pulled me onto the main road.I stopped in my tracks and gently freed my hand from hers. She stopped too and looked at me, confused.I tried to speak as calmly as I could. Belle and I exchanged a helpless look and got up to leave. But Stacy blocked our way, still holding the bid proposal. She raised her brows with a smug look in her eyes and waved the proposal at Belle, smiling.Stacy said, "Belle, I won. What are you going to do about it now?"Her thoughts were full of excitement."Did you see that, Jake? I'm way better than Belle. Come back to me now. Don't let her fool you!"Stacy and Zack looked so pleased with themselves.Clearly, Zack was too busy trying to read Stacy's mind to realize that winning the bid at this price meant taking a huge loss. He actually thought he had won.Belle wasn't about to put up with Stacy's nonsense. She crossed her arms and said casually, "I wasn't even competing with you, but somehow you 'won' again. Stacy, can you stop tailing me?"I knew those words had hit a very sensitive spot for Stacy. She had always been the one who lost her composure over Belle's words.Stacy was so angry that she started trembling.

"Thank goodness I have Zack to help me figure things out. Jake really is trying to fool me! I knew it had to be that tramp, Belle. She'd do anything to win the bid!" Stacy thought.Thinking this, she put on her usual haughty attitude and disdainfully tossed the divorce papers into my arms."Jacob, tell Belle that winning the bid takes real skill. Don't even think about using dirty tricks!"After saying that, she stole a cautious glance at me and licked her lips. I knew she always did that when she was nervous. The next moment, she cleared her throat and said, "Well, Jacob, if you come back to me now, I might consider giving you a little promotion. You could be a manager."Before I could say anything, a clear female voice came from behind me. "A manager? Stacy, who are you looking down on?"Next thing I knew, Belle walked up beside me. She was dressed in a sleek business dress. She swept her dark hair back and said icily, "Jacob is Sidman Group's vice president, and you want him
