Chapter 2

Author: Heroic Thief
Hazel hesitated for a moment, the conflict in her eyes plain to see. "I'll—"

She hadn't even finished speaking when her phone suddenly rang again, as though someone were urging her on the other end. She brushed my hand away without any hesitation as her inner conflict vanished completely.

She then said, "I'm sorry, Brandon, but I really have something urgent to attend to."

She grabbed her coat and walked out without hesitation after saying that.

I stared at her retreating figure as tears streamed down my face. I suddenly felt as if someone had flipped a light switch, leaving my entire world completely dark. I collapsed heavily to the floor, incapable of discerning anything further.

I found myself in an entirely white environment after finally regaining consciousness. I could tell that the surroundings were bright, but I was only able to discern faint silhouettes. It felt as though a blindfold had been placed over my eyes, obscuring my view of the world.

I felt someone approaching me, followed by a weary sigh. "I told you before that you couldn't keep crying like this with your condition, Mr. Hunter. How could you let this happen? Your eyes are badly damaged now, and I'm afraid your eyesight will never go back to the way it was.

"If you keep this up, you're going to go totally blind, Mr. Hunter. That said, I can arrange an immediate retinal transplant for you, as a donor retina has just become available."

I clutched the blanket tightly and nodded my head.

That doctor continued, "You need to get a family member to sign off on it, though. Do you have any family—"

I froze as it finally hit me that I didn't have any family left. Mom and Dad had died in a car crash back when I was with Hazel. I completely fell apart and spiraled into depression during that period.

Hazel had been the one who cared for me with unwavering patience, pulling me out of that dark chapter of my life. She was the one who proposed and promised to take care of me forever once I got better. She wasn't just my wife—she was my only family.

That explained why I had feared her death so much and wept to the point of blindness over her illness.

It was all a deception, though. It shattered me completely, far worse than any physical pain, leaving me feeling like everyone in the world had abandoned me.

"I have no family anymore," I muttered absentmindedly, tears spilling out and hitting the blanket.

That doctor froze for a second, then quickly stepped in to stop me. "You really can't cry anymore, Mr. Hunter."

It was then that the phone rang, and the doctor said, "Your wife is calling. She's allowed to sign for you, so there's no need to be so down, Mr. Hunter."

I remained silent as the doctor answered the phone. "Is this Brandon's family speaking? He's close to total blindness, but he qualifies for retinal surgery to bring back his sight. Please come over to sign the consent form, Mrs. Hunter."

It was a moment later that the doctor's tone shifted. "What do you mean by that? Why would I lie to you? You can believe whatever you want—I'll let Brandon speak to you."

I took the phone as soon as the doctor passed it to me, only to hear an impatient tone coming from the other side. "What are you doing, Brandon? You can't just come up with a ridiculous excuse just because I stepped out for a while. You ought to stop acting out, Brandon."

I heard teasing laughter coming from the other side at that moment. My hearing had actually become exceptionally sharp since I couldn't see well anymore. I even caught Hazel whispering in a helpless but fond tone, "Oh, stop messing around, Nathan."

Hazel's tone shifted entirely when directed at me.

"I always thought you were a good husband, running around and finding doctors for me ever since I got sick, Brandon. What are you doing now, though? Why can't you be a bit more understanding? I'm the one who's sick here, so stop trying to play me with these ridiculous lies, Brandon!"

She hung up on me without hesitation after saying that.

I stated hurriedly, "I'm starving, so let's get to eating."I noticed that Queenie's behavior that day was strange, unlike anything I had seen from her before, almost unexplainably so."You should head home early and get some rest once you're done eating. Why did you even bother coming over when you're this exhausted? "You ought to know that the elderly lady next door is always inviting me for dinner, but since you're always here, I never get to go. You see, she is actually quite upset with me right now."Queenie remained silent, merely humming in response.I sharply sensed that something was off. Queenie was acting entirely too strange that day.She helped me clean up the dishes once we were done eating. I told her she should get going, but instead of leaving, she stayed exactly where she was and just watched me.I moved closer and gave her a shove, my mind instantly going numb. I knew that the fabric of her clothes was something Queenie would never wear—she had told me in the

I was stunned. I never expected that this was what had been bothering Queenie. "How long have you known?"Queenie replied, "I found out about it yesterday. Hazel returned, came to the hospital to find me, and coughed up a mouthful of blood in my office."I realized then that the troublesome family member Queenie spoke of yesterday was actually Hazel. I pondered it for a while and realized that these past two months had allowed me to adapt to life without her completely. I had actually forgotten about her for a very long time and hadn't even thought of her once.I chuckled lightly and joked with her, saying, "I won't make a point of seeing her. After all, as you know, I can't really see anything these days anyway."Queenie didn't laugh this time. She stated solemnly, "I'll definitely restore your sight."I found the emotional gravity of that statement exceedingly profound, making me hesitant to reply. I could only chuckle softly and thank her for her promise.Queenie visited occ

Hazel was yelling loudly at the hospital. "Get Queenie out here this instant! Where is Brandon, Queenie?"She refused to stop yelling even though the people at the hospital kept trying to calm her down and explain that Queenie wasn't there. She disturbed a lot of patients, causing several family members of the patients to shoot her irritated looks."What are you yelling for? Have you forgotten that this is a hospital? Please keep your voice down and be sensible!"Hazel scoffed. "What's it to you? Get the hell out of here!""You should just pull the plug if there's nothing to be done!""How can you say something like that? You'd better apologize this instant!"Just as things were about to reach a boiling point, Queenie walked through the hospital's main entrance and said, "I'm Queenie Simpson. Is there anything I can do for you?"Hazel rushed forward and seized Queenie by the collar. "You're Queenie Simpson? Where is Brandon right now? Where did he go? You definitely know where h

Hazel finally understood the source of her unease. She gripped her phone in disbelief, her eyes turning completely bloodshot. "W-What did you just say?"Upon sensing the change in her expression, Nathan tugged at her arm, asking, "What's the matter, Hazel?"Hazel unexpectedly yanked her arm away from Nathan's grip and snapped, "Scram!"She held the phone tightly and yelled at the person on the other end of the line, "Go on—repeat what you just said! What happened to Brandon?"Jennifer repeated herself, "Mr. Hunter cried himself blind over your illness. He sold all his shares and left—his whereabouts are unknown, Ms. Zimmerman."Hazel's phone fell and shattered on impact. She staggered backward and nearly fell. "T-That's impossible! He was perfectly fine before this! How could he have gone blind?"Nathan gritted his teeth, completely consumed by jealousy. He thought that if it hadn't been for me, he would have already won over Hazel completely. He couldn't help but wonder why I al

Having said that, Hazel grabbed Nathan's hand and strode away.I could still sense the taunting look Nathan cast my way, even though I couldn't make him out clearly. That night, an unknown sender sent me another recording. The two intimate voices and intertwined breathing made it clear what had taken place. Nathan's voice emerged from the recording. "Are you genuinely upset with Brandon this time, Hazel? He probably just wanted you to stay with him and accompany him more this time."Hazel's voice carried unmistakable disgust. "You're truly the sensible one here, Nathan. If Brandon—that blockhead—were just a fraction like you, things would be so much better. I'll wait until he apologizes to me. I'm going to ignore him for now."Nathan asked, "What if he doesn't apologize at all?"Hazel scoffed. "What's the point of having him around, then? You're far better than him. Brandon is so stiff and old-fashioned that just looking at him kills the mood instantly."It was then that anothe

That doctor stood in front of me, absolutely furious. "How can she be so callous? What kind of wife refuses to believe her husband is sick? I'm going to call her again. That surgery can't take place without a signature."There was only a busy signal from the other end, and no matter how hard the doctor tried, the call wouldn't go through again. That doctor tried calling more than a dozen times until someone walked into the hospital room and said, "That cornea from the donor has already been transferred to another hospital. There was an emergency with another patient, and the surgery is already underway."I froze while the doctor gritted their teeth in frustration. "That absolute monster!"They then turned to look at me and said, "You can rest assured that if there's another donation, I'll contact you right away, Mr. Hunter."I nodded and thanked the doctor, feeling a suffocating tightness in my chest that made it impossible to breathe. I couldn't help but wonder why Hazel would do
