Chapter 5

Author: Heroic Thief
Hazel finally understood the source of her unease. She gripped her phone in disbelief, her eyes turning completely bloodshot. "W-What did you just say?"

Upon sensing the change in her expression, Nathan tugged at her arm, asking, "What's the matter, Hazel?"

Hazel unexpectedly yanked her arm away from Nathan's grip and snapped, "Scram!"

She held the phone tightly and yelled at the person on the other end of the line, "Go on—repeat what you just said! What happened to Brandon?"

  • She Played Sick, I Played Along   Chapter 8

I stated hurriedly, "I'm starving, so let's get to eating."I noticed that Queenie's behavior that day was strange, unlike anything I had seen from her before, almost unexplainably so."You should head home early and get some rest once you're done eating. Why did you even bother coming over when you're this exhausted? "You ought to know that the elderly lady next door is always inviting me for dinner, but since you're always here, I never get to go. You see, she is actually quite upset with me right now."Queenie remained silent, merely humming in response.I sharply sensed that something was off. Queenie was acting entirely too strange that day.She helped me clean up the dishes once we were done eating. I told her she should get going, but instead of leaving, she stayed exactly where she was and just watched me.I moved closer and gave her a shove, my mind instantly going numb. I knew that the fabric of her clothes was something Queenie would never wear—she had told me in the

I was stunned. I never expected that this was what had been bothering Queenie. "How long have you known?"Queenie replied, "I found out about it yesterday. Hazel returned, came to the hospital to find me, and coughed up a mouthful of blood in my office."I realized then that the troublesome family member Queenie spoke of yesterday was actually Hazel. I pondered it for a while and realized that these past two months had allowed me to adapt to life without her completely. I had actually forgotten about her for a very long time and hadn't even thought of her once.I chuckled lightly and joked with her, saying, "I won't make a point of seeing her. After all, as you know, I can't really see anything these days anyway."Queenie didn't laugh this time. She stated solemnly, "I'll definitely restore your sight."I found the emotional gravity of that statement exceedingly profound, making me hesitant to reply. I could only chuckle softly and thank her for her promise.Queenie visited occ

Hazel was yelling loudly at the hospital. "Get Queenie out here this instant! Where is Brandon, Queenie?"She refused to stop yelling even though the people at the hospital kept trying to calm her down and explain that Queenie wasn't there. She disturbed a lot of patients, causing several family members of the patients to shoot her irritated looks."What are you yelling for? Have you forgotten that this is a hospital? Please keep your voice down and be sensible!"Hazel scoffed. "What's it to you? Get the hell out of here!""You should just pull the plug if there's nothing to be done!""How can you say something like that? You'd better apologize this instant!"Just as things were about to reach a boiling point, Queenie walked through the hospital's main entrance and said, "I'm Queenie Simpson. Is there anything I can do for you?"Hazel rushed forward and seized Queenie by the collar. "You're Queenie Simpson? Where is Brandon right now? Where did he go? You definitely know where h

What happened to Brandon?"Jennifer repeated herself, "Mr. Hunter cried himself blind over your illness. He sold all his shares and left—his whereabouts are unknown, Ms. Zimmerman."Hazel's phone fell and shattered on impact. She staggered backward and nearly fell. "T-That's impossible! He was perfectly fine before this! How could he have gone blind?"Nathan gritted his teeth, completely consumed by jealousy. He thought that if it hadn't been for me, he would have already won over Hazel completely. He couldn't help but wonder why I al

Having said that, Hazel grabbed Nathan's hand and strode away.I could still sense the taunting look Nathan cast my way, even though I couldn't make him out clearly. That night, an unknown sender sent me another recording. The two intimate voices and intertwined breathing made it clear what had taken place. Nathan's voice emerged from the recording. "Are you genuinely upset with Brandon this time, Hazel? He probably just wanted you to stay with him and accompany him more this time."Hazel's voice carried unmistakable disgust. "You're truly the sensible one here, Nathan. If Brandon—that blockhead—were just a fraction like you, things would be so much better. I'll wait until he apologizes to me. I'm going to ignore him for now."Nathan asked, "What if he doesn't apologize at all?"Hazel scoffed. "What's the point of having him around, then? You're far better than him. Brandon is so stiff and old-fashioned that just looking at him kills the mood instantly."It was then that anothe

That doctor stood in front of me, absolutely furious. "How can she be so callous? What kind of wife refuses to believe her husband is sick? I'm going to call her again. That surgery can't take place without a signature."There was only a busy signal from the other end, and no matter how hard the doctor tried, the call wouldn't go through again. That doctor tried calling more than a dozen times until someone walked into the hospital room and said, "That cornea from the donor has already been transferred to another hospital. There was an emergency with another patient, and the surgery is already underway."I froze while the doctor gritted their teeth in frustration. "That absolute monster!"They then turned to look at me and said, "You can rest assured that if there's another donation, I'll contact you right away, Mr. Hunter."I nodded and thanked the doctor, feeling a suffocating tightness in my chest that made it impossible to breathe. I couldn't help but wonder why Hazel would do
