Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
"Owen!" Lucinda hurriedly steadied Owen, then frowned at me. "Warren, I'm the one who brought Owen here. If you're going to get angry, take it out on me."

Clenching my fists, I ignored them and dumped all the junk onto the floor. A document fluttered down and landed at Owen's feet.

He picked it up and glanced at it, his eyes instantly turning red. He then dropped the paper and turned to leave.

"Owen!" Lucinda grabbed his hand.

"Let go! You two are already engaged!" Owen shouted, pulling his hand away.

I looked down. It was the engagement agreement between me and Lucinda.

Lucinda held tightly onto Owen's hand. Although he looked heartbroken, he hadn't actually taken a single step out.

Unable to hold him back, Lucinda frowned at me. "Warren, apologize to Owen right now."

"Why should I?" I asked, stunned.

"If you hadn't made this engagement agreement in the first place, would Owen be this heartbroken now? You pretended to be cleaning up, but you actually did it on purpose so he'd see, didn't you?"

I laughed out of sheer exasperation.

"Lucinda, I never realized just how stupid you are."

She was stunned.

I turned to Owen. "Can you tell that she and I live together, or do you not know that we're together? That being the case, why did you ask earlier whether I was angry? You clearly know everything, so who exactly are you putting on this act of being wronged and kept in the dark for?"

Owen frowned. He made a show of turning to leave, but Lucinda pulled him back.

"Warren, just zip it, would you?"

I ignored her and continued packing.

Owen continued to put up a struggle. "Don't stop me! Warren has gotten the wrong idea about me! You two are engaged—I never should've come!"

"Warren!" Still holding Owen's wrist, Lucinda frowned at me. "Apologize to him, now!"

I clenched my fists tightly. "No."

"Are you sure about that?"

I jutted out my chin. "Yes!"

Lucinda stared at me for a few seconds, then bent down and picked up the engagement agreement.

"See, you really don't measure up to Owen at all. Besides scheming and vying for attention, what else can you even do? Figures you've never been abroad—you're nowhere as worldly as Owen."

After saying that, she tore the engagement agreement in half.

"Since you refuse to apologize, then I'm calling off our engagement. You can keep this worthless piece of paper for all I care."

She ripped it to shreds in two quick motions and flung the pieces in my face. With that, she turned and walked off, pulling Owen along without so much as a backward glance.

I smashed the photo of her and me onto the floor. The broken glass split the two of us apart, and I kicked it over to the trash can.

Lucinda and I didn't contact each other for three days.

She and I used to chat every day. The habit had lasted more than two thousand days. It was just that for over a thousand of those days, I was the one who started the conversation.

But now, we didn't chat anymore.

I was at the hotel sorting out handover paperwork when Lucinda called me out of the blue.

"You didn't come home?"

I continued with the work in my hands. "Is something the matter?"

She sent me a picture of the home.

The trash hadn't been taken out. Even though the dishes on the table seemed to have been washed, grease stains were crusted over them. Her wrinkled and unironed clothes were piled messily on the bed.

"Once you've had enough fun outside, come home. The house has been like this the whole time. It's about time you paid it some attention."

"Isn't Owen there?"

"As much as he wants to help, he's just no good at housework. Besides, why should he have to do this kind of work, when he's been living in comfort abroad?"

I had no energy to argue with her. "With all your money, you could hire a housekeeper in no time."

Lucinda was silent for a moment.

"Even the best housekeeper could never be as attentive as you. Owen has high standards for how he lives, so none of them would do."

"You're really out of your mind!"

With that, I hung up.

Lucinda called again, but I blocked her.

Before long, a notification came that my bank card had been frozen. It was the card Lucinda had given me.

When her business failed, I never gave up on her and kept cheering her on. After I helped her pull herself together, I took on the role of stabilizing the home front and turned down promotions time and again.

Six years passed, and she became the CEO whom everyone looked up to, while I was still a low-level employee.

I held my forehead and said through gritted teeth, "I want all these people to receive the punishment they deserve.""Certainly." Ms. Estrada nodded repeatedly. "I was informed of the situation on my way here and have already called the police."Right on cue, sirens wailed outside.Owen suddenly clutched his head and stammered, "I-I don't know anything. I'm sorry. I have depression."Someone among the employees said, "I've never seen a depressed person this violent."It drew more people to chime in."Exactly. Depression comes from people who can't bring themselves to hurt anyone else, so they turn it all inward until they break. But Owen? He's out there making sure the whole world knows how great he is and how powerful his connections are. You think someone like that gets depressed?""I've seen Owen's psychiatric evaluation report. The doctor who signed off on it is a close friend of Lucinda's.""Holy crap! That explains everything.""No, you're all lying!" Owen screamed.Whe

"Warren, if you kneel and apologize to Owen right here, we'll let the whole thing slide," Lucinda said.Owen began to panic. "But—""Hush now," Lucinda cut him off.It was just two simple words, yet they carried an intimidating weight.Owen gritted his teeth."No," I replied, my voice coming through clear as day.I held up my phone, showing 911 on the screen."Let's see who owes who an apology when the police get here."In a flash, Owen grabbed the phone and cut off the call to the police."Warren, can you try to be reasonable? You're the one who attacked me first!"Lucinda grabbed Owen as he tried to lunge forward."You were in the wrong to begin with. All you have to do is apologize. Is that so hard? You think I don't know why you came back? If you apologize like you're told, there's still a chance for us."Even now, she still thought I came back because I regretted leaving her?I was already dizzy from blood loss. Staggering a few steps, I steadied myself on the table.

"Mr. Calhoun?"A crowd quickly formed. The moment Owen saw how many people there were, he acted as if I'd hurt him."I caught him trying to sneak in and cause trouble by impersonating a VIP. I was just about to stop him when he attacked me.""Warren?" A familiar voice rang out.I turned and saw Lucinda staring at us in shock. Beside her were the headquarters executives who had come with her to discuss the deal."What's the matter? You couldn't make it out there and decided to come back?" Lucinda asked with a relieved smile. The executives beside her clearly didn't recognize me either, for they all laughed."Sir, I've never seen you before. I've met the usual VIPs, and you're definitely not one of them.""You gentlemen can look up Michael's full name. I'm sure with your level of access, this shouldn't be a problem."The executives exchanged glances. Before long, they had indeed found my name."Warren Calhoun?" Lucinda laughed. "There sure are a lot of people in the world with

Owen stood there with his coffee, dressed head to toe in designer labels. At the sight of him carrying himself like he was above everyone else, I let out a bitter laugh. Not only was he a senior engineer at my company, but Lucinda also had connections and resources here the entire time.Back when she was on the rise, I once begged her to speak to someone at the company and get me moved to a role with the same salary, but without the endless unpaid overtime. But she just shot back impatiently, "You think I know everyone? Why do you come to me for everything? And favors aren't free, you know. If I get them to help you, I'll have to return the favor later. Why don't you use your brain for once?"I never brought it up again. But it turned out the reason she couldn't do it was simply that I was the one asking."I told you, you can't go in there!" Owen yanked me back as I walked toward the door. "You knew Lucinda was here today to discuss a deal, so you came to get her attention, didn't

When I saw Ms. Hoffman, she had already finished all the paperwork."Ms Hoffman!" I looked at her in disbelief."What are you still standing there for? The plane is about to take off!"We sprinted to the parking lot together."Ms. Hoffman, how did you know I was in the detention center?" I asked."I kept asking around when I couldn't reach you. When I found out something had happened to you, I knew Lucinda wouldn't come to bail you out.""Sorry for causing you trouble," I said guiltily. She grinned at me. "Talented people like you don't need to apologize."We got in the car, and she floored it all the way to the airport.A mix of emotions washed over me. The person Lucinda saw as fit only to wait on others was, in someone else's eyes, a rare gem. Before boarding, Lucinda sent me a message."Owen has forgiven you. I'll come bail you out soon. Ever since you left, the house has been a mess and so have I. No more of this nonsense, alright? Be good now."I turned off my phone a

"Lucinda, I—"I tried to call after her, but Lucinda had already helped Owen into the passenger seat.My cries were lost in the cloud of dust.I didn't remember blacking out, or how a passerby found me and called the police. Thanks to timely treatment, I pulled through.I called the police immediately, then asked around and found out which hospital room Owen was in. The license plate at the scene was indeed Owen's, and the police launched an investigation right away. However, Owen had been scared out of his wits."I'm sorry, Warren. I don't know what came over me. I was sick at the time.""Does being sick give you the right to treat a human life like it's nothing?" I brought my hand down on the table. "Do you know I almost died?""Shut up!" Lucinda pushed me away. "He has depression. Don't make things hard for him.""Depression?" I echoed with a frown.Lucinda flung a psychiatric evaluation report in front of me."Owen was in the middle of an episode at the time. Do you hav
