Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
Lucinda had given me this card as a way of giving back after she'd made it big. It was just that most of the money in it had gone toward our daily expenses.

Freezing it was her way of forcing me to come back.

I was extremely glad that I'd taken Ms. Hoffman's offer early on, because the new bank account held the bonus she had given me for my promotion and raise.

I would no longer have to depend on Lucinda to get by.

The next day, while I was at the cafe finishing up the paperwork, I saw Owen and Lucinda.

I got up to leave, but Owen came over to say hello.

I just didn't get it. I'd made it plenty obvious that I was fed up, so why would he keep pestering me?

Amid the pushing and shoving, the documents fell to the floor.

Owen looked at the top page in surprise. "Overseas transfer letter? Warren, you're going to the overseas branch?"

I snatched the documents back.

Lucinda looked at me in astonishment. "You're leaving?"

Owen furrowed his brow. "Warren, did you find out that I also want to apply for this branch, so you want to go there and throw your weight around?"

I was stunned.

Lucinda frowned and asked, "Warren, you saw that Owen went abroad before, so now you're planning to follow in his footsteps? Working in that branch is exactly what Owen has always dreamed of. What are you trying to do by going there? Withdraw your application now!"

I gripped the transfer letter tightly.

"No way! Lucinda, I don't get it. Why does he get to chase his dream, but when I want the same thing, it's a problem? Besides, can you really bear to let him leave?"

Lucinda hesitated for a moment before replying, "I shouldn't hold him back. He didn't come back just to be tied down by me. I can go visit him whenever I want, and I'll always respect his freedom."

My chest tightened. "So, you're not angry that he dumped you back then?"

Lucinda closed her eyes for a moment. "He had his reasons. Was I really supposed to make him stay and suffer alongside me? Warren, opportunities to transfer to the overseas branch like this don't come often.

"Be a dear and drop it. I'll have someone arrange a cushy job for you here. Stop competing with Owen all the time."

I slapped her across the face. Owen cried out in shock and stood between us, grabbing my arm.

"Warren, how could you hit Lucinda?" he asked. "I won't go. Warren, don't fight with Lucinda because of me. I—"

I slapped him across the face too, cutting him off.

"Just what are you two talking about?" I asked, carefully putting the transfer letter away.

Lucinda shielded Owen behind her. "Have you lost your mind?"

I eyed them coldly. "I've made the decision to leave, and nothing you say will change anything."

Then, I glanced at Owen. "Don't pull that crap in front of me again. It makes me sick."

With that, I strode out of the cafe under the stunned gazes of the customers.

Lucinda seemed a bit taken aback as she watched me go, but then she gritted her teeth.

On the way to deliver the documents, I had just stopped at a red light when something slammed hard into my car from behind.

I braked frantically, but the car behind seemed not to notice it had hit mine. I honked wildly, but the car only drove faster.

My car crashed into the wall. I was flung halfway out the window. My chest was crushed between the airbag and the seat, making it hard for me to breathe.

There was hardly anyone around, so no one saw the crash.

My phone was gone—flung off to god knows where.

Finally, the door of the car behind me opened. Owen staggered out, reeking of alcohol, and made a phone call.

Before long, Lucinda pulled up in her car.

Fighting back the pain, I shouted, "Lucinda, help me! Lucinda! I'm over here!"

Owen sat slumped on the ground, shouting loudly.

Lucinda looked back and forth between me and Owen. I was drenched in blood, while he had nothing but a small scrape on his ankle.

Gritting her teeth, she walked past me and hauled Owen to his feet.

"Lucinda!" I shouted with the last bit of oxygen left in my chest. "Save me first! Or at least call 911 for me! I-I can't breathe!"

"You can drop the act," Lucinda said darkly. "I'll drop Owen at the hospital and be back with an ambulance before you know it. Must you compete with him over everything? Can't you see he's in bad shape?"

I held my forehead and said through gritted teeth, "I want all these people to receive the punishment they deserve.""Certainly." Ms. Estrada nodded repeatedly. "I was informed of the situation on my way here and have already called the police."Right on cue, sirens wailed outside.Owen suddenly clutched his head and stammered, "I-I don't know anything. I'm sorry. I have depression."Someone among the employees said, "I've never seen a depressed person this violent."It drew more people to chime in."Exactly. Depression comes from people who can't bring themselves to hurt anyone else, so they turn it all inward until they break. But Owen? He's out there making sure the whole world knows how great he is and how powerful his connections are. You think someone like that gets depressed?""I've seen Owen's psychiatric evaluation report. The doctor who signed off on it is a close friend of Lucinda's.""Holy crap! That explains everything.""No, you're all lying!" Owen screamed.Whe

"Warren, if you kneel and apologize to Owen right here, we'll let the whole thing slide," Lucinda said.Owen began to panic. "But—""Hush now," Lucinda cut him off.It was just two simple words, yet they carried an intimidating weight.Owen gritted his teeth."No," I replied, my voice coming through clear as day.I held up my phone, showing 911 on the screen."Let's see who owes who an apology when the police get here."In a flash, Owen grabbed the phone and cut off the call to the police."Warren, can you try to be reasonable? You're the one who attacked me first!"Lucinda grabbed Owen as he tried to lunge forward."You were in the wrong to begin with. All you have to do is apologize. Is that so hard? You think I don't know why you came back? If you apologize like you're told, there's still a chance for us."Even now, she still thought I came back because I regretted leaving her?I was already dizzy from blood loss. Staggering a few steps, I steadied myself on the table.

"Mr. Calhoun?"A crowd quickly formed. The moment Owen saw how many people there were, he acted as if I'd hurt him."I caught him trying to sneak in and cause trouble by impersonating a VIP. I was just about to stop him when he attacked me.""Warren?" A familiar voice rang out.I turned and saw Lucinda staring at us in shock. Beside her were the headquarters executives who had come with her to discuss the deal."What's the matter? You couldn't make it out there and decided to come back?" Lucinda asked with a relieved smile. The executives beside her clearly didn't recognize me either, for they all laughed."Sir, I've never seen you before. I've met the usual VIPs, and you're definitely not one of them.""You gentlemen can look up Michael's full name. I'm sure with your level of access, this shouldn't be a problem."The executives exchanged glances. Before long, they had indeed found my name."Warren Calhoun?" Lucinda laughed. "There sure are a lot of people in the world with

Owen stood there with his coffee, dressed head to toe in designer labels. At the sight of him carrying himself like he was above everyone else, I let out a bitter laugh. Not only was he a senior engineer at my company, but Lucinda also had connections and resources here the entire time.Back when she was on the rise, I once begged her to speak to someone at the company and get me moved to a role with the same salary, but without the endless unpaid overtime. But she just shot back impatiently, "You think I know everyone? Why do you come to me for everything? And favors aren't free, you know. If I get them to help you, I'll have to return the favor later. Why don't you use your brain for once?"I never brought it up again. But it turned out the reason she couldn't do it was simply that I was the one asking."I told you, you can't go in there!" Owen yanked me back as I walked toward the door. "You knew Lucinda was here today to discuss a deal, so you came to get her attention, didn't

When I saw Ms. Hoffman, she had already finished all the paperwork."Ms Hoffman!" I looked at her in disbelief."What are you still standing there for? The plane is about to take off!"We sprinted to the parking lot together."Ms. Hoffman, how did you know I was in the detention center?" I asked."I kept asking around when I couldn't reach you. When I found out something had happened to you, I knew Lucinda wouldn't come to bail you out.""Sorry for causing you trouble," I said guiltily. She grinned at me. "Talented people like you don't need to apologize."We got in the car, and she floored it all the way to the airport.A mix of emotions washed over me. The person Lucinda saw as fit only to wait on others was, in someone else's eyes, a rare gem. Before boarding, Lucinda sent me a message."Owen has forgiven you. I'll come bail you out soon. Ever since you left, the house has been a mess and so have I. No more of this nonsense, alright? Be good now."I turned off my phone a

"Lucinda, I—"I tried to call after her, but Lucinda had already helped Owen into the passenger seat.My cries were lost in the cloud of dust.I didn't remember blacking out, or how a passerby found me and called the police. Thanks to timely treatment, I pulled through.I called the police immediately, then asked around and found out which hospital room Owen was in. The license plate at the scene was indeed Owen's, and the police launched an investigation right away. However, Owen had been scared out of his wits."I'm sorry, Warren. I don't know what came over me. I was sick at the time.""Does being sick give you the right to treat a human life like it's nothing?" I brought my hand down on the table. "Do you know I almost died?""Shut up!" Lucinda pushed me away. "He has depression. Don't make things hard for him.""Depression?" I echoed with a frown.Lucinda flung a psychiatric evaluation report in front of me."Owen was in the middle of an episode at the time. Do you hav
