Chapter 5

Author: Sweetie Moore
Rita whispered into my ear and sounded happy and reliant on me. She sounded like she truly loved me. When I heard her call me "Hubby," I laughed sarcastically to myself.

Even Rita had forgotten that this was the first time she called me "Hubby" since Hudson joined the company. Our so‑called marriage had died a long time ago.

That was when Rita's phone suddenly rang. An anxious look flashed in her eye when she saw the name on her phone screen. She was about to say something when I gave her an understanding smile and spoke before she could. "Is there an emergency at the office? You should go. Work comes first."

Rita was taken aback, and she nodded with relief. She kissed me softly on the cheek. "I promise to make it up to you when the project goes live tomorrow."

She left in a hurry.

Rita had kissed me many times, and this time, I found it particularly disgusting. As a CEO, she should have known very well that the project was riddled with problems, and it could never go live successfully. She still chose to lie to me and even made me the scapegoat by signing over the company's shares to me.

After Rita left, I planned to contact my lawyers. Before I could, I saw an image Hudson sent to me. It was a photo of a hotel room card. I knew it was his way of showing off and laughing at my stupidity.

Hudson had never been this obvious before, no matter how haughty he was. He was being blatant now because he found out that I had signed the equity transfer agreement. He believed victory was his, as the company and Rita had chosen to abandon me.

They overlooked one thing.

Rita had been too much in a hurry to go on her date with Hudson, or she felt overconfident about me giving in to her request. She never thought about checking the agreement twice.

She had no idea that I did not sign my name on the agreement.

The next day, the project went live as planned. Just like in my past life, the project hit a high note with high volumes of downloads and top‑ups. Everyone believed the company was sure to make a profit.

Even our marketing director, who had always been cautious with our projects, texted me excitedly about how the company would be rich and what a pity it was that I was not around as the person who made all of this possible.

All I did was smile and say nothing, because I knew this was only a surface victory.

Not long after, the system started to malfunction with bugs. Numerous users, especially corporate clients who had major amounts of classified data kept in our system, started getting their information stolen, causing huge economic losses in the billions.

The company went into panic mode as the technical department went into a frenzy trying to solve the problem. The public relations department tried putting out fires everywhere, and our customer support phone lines could not stop ringing.

As for me, I sat calmly in a café and watched the people in the streets without feeling much about the situation.

That was when Rita called me. "Casey, you need to come back to the office right now. Something serious has happened. The project is facing problems that only you can solve."

Rita sounded anxious, and there was a tinge of fear and panic.

I told her I would return soon and hung up with a cold smirk on my face.

Rita had put up a fine performance, and she forgot one thing.

If she was really in the office, why were there no background noises on her end of the call when the project had gone haywire? I took my time returning to the office, and it looked exactly as I expected.

It felt great to see the looks on Hudson and Rita's faces. When the debtors saw the empty pen drive, they surrounded Rita and Hudson. Hudson immediately showed his true colors when he saw the situation turn against them. He slapped Rita hard. "This is all your fault. All I wanted was to make some money, and you ruined everything."Rita held her hand to her burning cheek and looked at Hudson in disbelief. "Did we not promise each other, Hudson? That we would…"Before Rita finished, Hudson interrupted her. "Who made promises to you? The company belongs to you, and you are the one who signed the agreement. What does any of this have to do with me?"It was amazing to see how quickly Hudson changed his stance. Rita was stunned. It never occurred to her that Hudson would betray her.I watched everything unfold without feeling any pity for her. Rita deserved everything that happened to her. She once turned her back on me and abandoned me because of this man. Now the wheels had turned aga

Rita fell limply into a chair with a blank look in her eye. She looked like a puppet without a soul. She used to be a pure, adorable, and understanding woman, and I always believed she was the love of my life. I never expected all of it to be a facade. It was at that moment that Rita realized what she had lost.Rita knelt at my feet with tears streaming down her face. "I made a mistake, Casey. I was wrong. I was blinded by money and power, which was why I did all those things. Please forgive me, Casey. I promise I will not do anything like this again. I will make it up to you. Please give me another chance."Her face was covered with tears, and she looked pitiful. I would have given in to her if this were before. Now, all I felt was disgust. "Make it up to me? How do you plan on doing that? Who do you think you are to believe you can make anything up to me?"Be prepared to face justice from the law."I looked down at her with superiority as I spoke in an icy tone."Casey, I am b

However, it was not the time to focus on this. I took a deep breath to calm myself. After that, I looked at Rita. "What exactly do you want, Rita?"When Rita saw me finally caving in, the light of victory seemed to shine on her. She leaned into my ear and whispered with glee, "Simple. Let us all take a step back. Hudson and I no longer have the plane tickets. Help us purchase 2 new tickets to leave the country and give us 20 million each."In return, we will destroy all evidence against you, and I will make Hudson the scapegoat. After that, we will escape overseas. This is a win‑win for everyone, am I right?"I could not help sneering in my heart. Win‑win? How could she say something like that?Rita's suggestion meant that I would lose 40 million, and if I knew Rita well enough, she would never help me even if I gave her the money. She would still make me the scapegoat and report me for transferring capital. However…I was more crafty than she thought. I had come prepared after b

"You have been putting up an act this whole time, have you not? Do you take us for fools?"Hudson turned pale, and he trembled so much that he could not say a word. When a debtor put a blade to Hudson's neck, Rita quickly came forward to explain, "Do not be rash. We are really not lying to you. It is just… It is just that our money was stolen too."The debtors sneered."Your money was stolen? Who would steal your money? I bet you used up all the money, which is why you cannot pay us anything. Stop making up stories to delay paying up."Rita was almost crying, and she pointed at me in anger. "My money was really stolen, and he is the one behind it. He must have peeked at my password while I was not looking and transferred all my money somewhere else."Why are you treating me this way, Casey? I have always been good to you. Why must you betray me like this?"I sneered quietly as I watched Rita's teary performance. She was asking for it since she refused to give up. She was still tr
