Chapter 2

Faraway Galaxy
Hudson's POV

On the other end of the line, Louis Stetson sighed and said, "Hudson, think it over again. You know what that case in Haddon is like. The killer has been moving from place to place and specifically targets people who are alone. If you go there by yourself, you'll be short-handed. Things could easily go wrong."

I clutched my phone, my knuckles turning white. I said, "I've made up my mind. I'll leave the day after tomorrow."

After hanging up the phone, I went to the local administrative office. Even though Rebecca had passed away, someone still had to take care of the death certificate paperwork.

Grace didn't have the time for that, but I wanted to settle Rebecca's affairs. She deserved to rest in peace.

I walked up to the counter and handed over the documents. "Hello, I'm here to have the death certificate paperwork done."

The clerk looked through the documents and asked, "What's your relationship to the deceased?"

"I'm her son-in-law."

When the clerk heard this, his expression shifted subtly. He typed a few things into the computer, then turned the screen toward me. "Sir, the system lists someone else as the deceased's son-in-law. His name is Jason Shaw. You have no familial relationship with the deceased on record, so you can't handle her paperwork."

For a moment, I was stunned. "Is there some mistake? I've been married to the deceased's daughter for seven years. We even have a marriage certificate."

The clerk shook his head, still saying politely, "Sir, the information in our system has been verified and entered in person. It can't be wrong. Could there be some misunderstanding at home?"

I stood there at the counter, my mind completely blank. So, Rebecca had verified the information herself. She was a police officer. She had spent most of her life dealing with cases, and she was meticulous and cautious in everything she did.

Had she known all along that Jason had married Grace and kept it from me for seven years? What was I to her? Just a free babysitter? Was I nothing more than a pathetic simp who had spent seven years making himself useful where he wasn't wanted?

Ever since Rebecca was injured on a mission and fell into a coma, I had gone straight to the hospital after work every day. I had bathed her, turned her over, changed her catheter bag, and kept watch by her side until dawn. I lost nearly ten pounds during that time, yet I never once complained.

I knew Grace was busy with work and couldn't take care of her herself. As her husband, it was only right that I take care of her in my wife's place. After all, we were family. I never held a grudge.

But to my surprise, Rebecca had already decided I wasn't family anymore long before she went into a coma.

It was already dark when I left the office. I wanted to cry, but I couldn't. My chest felt so tight that I could barely breathe. I made my way home in a daze.

The entryway light was on, and the living room was bathed in a warm, golden glow. The dining table was set with a full spread of food.

Jason poked his head out of the kitchen, wearing an apron. He smiled when he saw me. "Hudson, you're home! Have a seat. The last dish will be ready in a moment."

He was wearing my slippers, looking completely at ease, like he was the real man of the house. Grace was sitting on the couch with a young girl huddled beside her. The girl looked to be around six or seven, clutching a doll in her hands.

She had Grace's eyes and brows, but her face and mouth looked uncannily like Jason's. A terrifying thought surfaced, but I couldn't bring myself to believe it.

When the girl saw me, she tugged on Grace's sleeve and asked timidly, "Mommy, who is this man?"

Mommy?

When I heard that, a chill ran through my entire body.

Hudson's POVJust as Grace was being escorted away, the banquet hall doors suddenly swung open.A lawyer walked into the hall and gave a slight nod to all the guests. "I have been entrusted by the late Mrs. Rivera to publicly read the will she left behind. Since Mr. Zeller was previously believed to have died in the line of duty, this will has remained sealed for the past six years and has never been made public."The entire banquet hall fell completely silent. I was stunned. I never expected Grace's mother to have left a will for me. The lawyer started reading, "I legally registered Aria Shaw as the child of my eldest daughter and took it upon myself to arrange for my younger daughter, Grace Rivera, and Jason Shaw to register their marriage. I also turned a blind eye when she used a forged marriage certificate to deceive Hudson Zeller."Hudson was my son-in-law for seven whole years. He treated me with the same devotion and care he would have shown his own mother. Even when I wa

Third-Person POVGrace said, "I'm willing to pursue this lead on my own and do everything I can to track down this serial killer's accomplices and dismantle the entire criminal network."Gideon fell silent. He thought it over for a while, then finally nodded. "There are still several accomplices at large. You can pursue this case on your own during your suspension. We'll discuss your final disciplinary action afterward."He then waved his hand, signaling the end of the meeting. As the other officers got up and left the conference room, their gazes toward Grace and Jason were filled with contempt and resentment. No one approached them or said a single word. Everyone deliberately kept their distance.…Hudson's POVWhile the suspect locked me to the metal chair, I noticed in the faint light coming through the window that one of the bricks in the wall behind me was loose. I reached out and gave it a gentle push, shifting it aside. Behind the wall was a narrow passage left over from

  • She Saved That Spot for Her Secret Lover   Chapter 7

Third-Person POVGrace remained unconscious in the hospital for two days before finally managing to wake up. She was still dazed, with dark circles beneath her eyes. In just three days, she had visibly lost weight, her cheeks noticeably sunken. She looked utterly haggard and exhausted.Every morning, Jason would first rush home to prepare three meals for Aria. Once he made sure she was taken care of, he would bring some light dishes back to the hospital and take care of her. He would wipe down the bedside table, bring her warm water, and take care of her dirty clothes. Time and time again, he would apologize to Grace and rack his brains to say whatever gentle words he could think of to cheer her up.Yet, Grace remained leaning against the headboard, staring blankly at the streets outside the window. Whenever he talked more than he should, she instantly grew annoyed and turned away, refusing to spare him another glance. The tenderness and thoughtfulness she had once shown him were

Third-Person POVAt Rebecca's funeral, Grace had ignored Hudson's anticipation and done the candlelight vigil with Jason instead. She left Hudson alone at the very back of the procession. Memories of everything she owed him came surging back, one after another. As she watched him, bound and helpless, she felt an indescribable panic creep into her heart. "It's okay," Grace reassured herself that once this rescue was over, she would set everything right again. She would divorce Jason, remarry Hudson, and let everyone know that he was her real husband. She forcibly suppressed the chaotic thoughts swirling in her mind. She braced her hands against the edge of the ventilation duct, preparing to climb inside and launch a surprise attack.Just then, Jason was standing guard outside the cordon at the front entrance, visibly on edge. He paced back and forth. He was so distracted and flustered that he kicked a stack of metal drums onto the ground. With a loud clang, the harsh sound of cla

Third-Person POVGrace panicked, and the walkie-talkie slipped from her hand and crashed to the ground.Gideon's voice came through again, urgent and tense. "The suspect left a clue at the scene! She's holding Mr. Zeller in a room at the very back of the factory. There's an old underground water tunnel behind the factory that was built years ago. "I remember you came here with your mother once to investigate illegal construction, so you know the layout! Slip in from the rear while we keep her distracted at the front entrance. Find the right moment to get close and rescue him!"Grace bent down to pick up the walkie-talkie and hastily shoved it into her pocket. She couldn't stop her fingers from trembling. She pursed her lips and quickly checked the gun at her waist, making sure all her equipment was in order. Then she stepped toward the tall weeds along the side, ready to push through.Jason immediately hurried after her and tightly grabbed the sleeve of her uniform. His eyes were

Hudson's POVI thought Grace would panic and try to explain herself. But instead, she rubbed her temples, her voice carrying a hint of exhaustion. "Seven years ago, Aria needed her legal status to be official, but my sister held a sensitive position. No one could know that she had a child. So, I registered my marriage to Jason to make the paperwork easier."Jason panicked and hurried over to grab my hand. "Hudson, if divorcing Grace is what it takes for Aria to be able to go to school, I'll do it right now. I'll give this marriage back to you!"I looked into his eyes. He looked desperate, and his eyes still held tears. Yet, I gave a wry smile and pulled my hand away. "No need for that. We need to maintain appearances anyway, so whether I have this marriage or not doesn't really matter. Once I finish the case I'm handling tomorrow, I'll take care of the necessary paperwork with you two."I was so calm that even Grace was caught off guard. Before she could say anything, I turned arou
