The Cold Plains broke my skin open in three days. Darian offered me a brazier and a warm tent, and I turned both down.
"There's no princess out here, Uncle. Stop looking for one."
He studied me a long moment. "Royal blood or not, this place buries soft women."
"Then teach me. Wolf, blade, bow, war-strategy — all of it. From today I'm just another soldier under your command."
Something moved behind his eyes. I'd said the very thing he'd come prepared to say to me.
"Good," he barked, and he was grinning. "Then I'll hold nothing back."
He didn't. At dawn we ran the ice, and he drove my wolf out of me over and over until shifting stopped tearing and started singing. Afternoons went to the bow and the blade. Nights went to his annotated war scrolls by low firelight. He'd ordered the garrison to show me no mercy, so they didn't. They picked me for every sparring circle and put me in the snow, again and again.
I let them. When the bowstring split my fingers open, I buried my hand in the drift until it went numb and drew again. My wolf learned to run until her paws bled and then run further. I was starting from nothing, so I paid in the only coin I had — every hour the others slept.
Three winters later, the boy who used to pin me down knelt in the snow with his arm twisted up behind him. Kael Frostbane laughed through his teeth.
"The Commander was right. You're cruel to yourself and worse to everyone else."
I dropped him. "Get up. We're riding the line."
Darian took us out along the frozen river. Deep winter, he said. The strays were too busy starving to raid us.
Then it came back to me — the war report that reached the court in my last life. A brutal cold snap. Ice thick enough to carry them. The enemy pouring across in the dark, and our border drowning in its own blood.
"They're starving, Uncle. Starving wolves raid. If that ice holds their weight, they'll come over it tonight."
His face went hard. "Measure it. Now."
It held. It would've carried war wolves and horses both.
We laid the ambush instead, and I tasted my first battle that night and loved it. We broke them on the river.
Alpha King Ragnar Vorthys summoned Darian home to the Red Moon Court for his reward, with the new year coming on.
In my last life, this was the season Selena first came crawling back to court.
I wondered how she was enjoying all that splendor she'd killed me for. I was going to see her.

Lyra ‘s POV
The day I rode out, the court buried me. A proclamation went across the whole Blood Moon Realm: Lyra Crimson, dead of a bloodline mutation. So the girl who came home three winters later wasn't a princess at all — just Darian Wolfshear's adopted son, a low-ranking lieutenant with a borrowed name and a soldier's coat.
Ragnar Vorthys gave out the rewards, then kept me back alone. He reached for my hand and stopped short when he felt what the frontier had made of it, rougher than any man's in his own guard.
"Have they been cruel to you out there, Lyra?"
I gave him a warrior's salute. "I couldn't serve you at court, Your Majesty. Holding your border was no cruelty."
That pleased him. He gave me the golden blood-whip and leave to stay in the palace a few days.
I went looking for my mother, Luna Isolde, and found Selena in the Crescent Garden instead — pearls in her hair, blood-jade at her throat, a warmer cradled in soft hands. We were born the same hour and no one alive would've called us sisters now.
She covered her mouth. "Poor little thing. You've got the face of a scullery maid."
Her women laughed. I didn't move.
"You worry too much. I've never been better."
It was the truth. Out there I ran on my wolf's back under an open sky, I had brothers who'd die beside me, and my fate belonged to nobody but me. Selena heard a brave lie. She always hears what she wants.
Then a shriek cut across the garden. Our eldest sister, Victoria, first daughter of the King's first wife, standing over a shattered blood-jade cup with her wolf pacing at her heels.
"Someone's going to pay for this."
Selena curtsied low. "Sister."
Victoria's eyes brightened. She flicked a hand toward her wolf. "Then let her bite you and we'll call it even. You're so gifted at pleasing me."
Lyra ‘s POVI had the den prepare the victory feast exactly as it would have been prepared any other year, and I put my mother in charge of it.She knew where my father was. She knew who was holding him. She carried the keys to the kitchens and the wine cellars around all week with that knowledge sitting behind her eyes, and she never once asked me about it. On the third night she finally came to my chambers and sat on the edge of my bed like she had when I was small."You've won, Lyra. You've beaten a pack nobody could beat." Her hands worked at each other in her lap. "So why does none of it seem to be enough for you? Let it go now. Let me find you a good match, somewhere quiet, and you can stop."Stop. She meant it kindly. She's spent her whole life
Lyra ‘s POVWe'd been promised an escort of royal kin. The Alpha came himself.Sure of his own ground and his own teeth, he brought almost no one with him."Let's have a look at what they've sent me."He handed me down from the carriage, and the second our palms met his whole face changed."What princess has hands like these?"Too late. I turned my wrist and put my blade against his throat."Soft hands can't hold a knife."I gave the word and my bridal train came out of its silk — every attendant armed, every dowry chest open, the whole procession standing as the g
Lyra ‘s POVWord went out across the realm that the Red Moon was sending a daughter east. They said the bridal train would run for a hundred leagues. They said she'd travel with more attendants than some packs have wolves. For a season, every den in the country agreed on one thing — Princess Selena must be the most beloved daughter the King ever had.The real Selena had the Queen's teeth at her throat and no title left to hide behind. My father sparing her life at all was more mercy than she'd earned. They put out feelers to the Elders' house, and the Elders wouldn't have her. She had no rank anymore and she'd been barred from ever showing her face at court again, and no house wants a first wife it has to keep behind a wall. They'd take her as a
Lyra ‘s POVMy uncle put his boot through the table when he heard."They'd feed you to that thing in her place. They don't care if you come back at all." He was already reaching for his sword belt. "We're done waiting, Lyra. Call up every wolf we've got and ride. I'd love to meet the man who tells you to marry."I laughed at him. "Oh, I'll marry."He stopped with his hand on the buckle and stared like I'd started speaking in tongues.I bent over the map of the Red Moon lands and traced the road east with one finger. "We've got soldiers now, Uncle. Tell me what we still don't have."He worked it out slowly. Then his mouth opened. "The pack behind us."
Lyra ‘s POVThe Obsidian Apex Alpha came to take a Luna out of the Red Moon, and in the end he chose Selena.By blood and standing it should have been Victoria. But the night before the great feast, Victoria's wolf went into convulsions in her own chambers, foaming black, and when the sickness broke she came out of it with one side of her muzzle rotted through and a wolf that would never run straight again. A ruined Luna. No Alpha would look at her twice.Selena had been the only one with her that evening. Selena had poured her wine.My sister would poison the Queen's own daughter and put our mother's throat under that woman's teeth, all to buy herself a way out. She's ruthless in a way that never quite reaches clever, because she still believes a man is a door.I didn't have time for her. I had grain to buy and soldiers to feed.Another summer burned off the ice, and my mother's letter reached the Wolf Domain by courier — save your sister, she begged. Selena would sooner die than go
Lyra ‘s POVI could have warned Selena. Sat her down, shown her what was coming, saved her from herself. But what right did I have? We'd each been given two lives. We were each spending ours as we saw fit, and that seemed fair enough. In my first life I clawed my way to the highest place a woman of the Red Moon could stand. I meant to use it. I meant to argue my father out of the marriage and walk into his council chamber as myself, and let every daughter born after me see it done once, so they'd know it could be done at all. Then Selena broke the frontier and the stray packs came pouring south, and my father went begging to the Obsidian Apex for rescue. Their terms were simple. Submit as vassals. Ten million in gold. And send us the girl.Everything I'd built in the first half of my life ended there, buried under a wedding veil. She didn't just cut my road out from under me. She cut it for every woman who'd have come after. She's been reborn and she hasn't changed a thing. So why wou
