Chapter 2 The Price of Ten Years

ผู้เขียน: Layne
At three in the morning the next day, I got up as usual.

Daniel got up with me, saying he would help me for one last day.

Steam rose from the breakfast stall, stinging my eyes. For ten years, I had struggled to make a living amid the smoke and bustle of this little stall.

Many of my regular customers had heard that I was selling it and gathered around me.

"Emily, you can't give up cooking like this. Where are we going to get such good breakfast sausage after this?"

"Exactly. How can you just quit all of a sudden?"

I forced a smile that looked uglier than crying and told them there was an emergency in the family.

Daniel had already brought the buyer, Walter, over.

"Daniel, the most I can offer for this stall is $300,000. You know how tough business is these days."

Walter lit a cigarette and brushed him off casually.

My heart sank.

After ten years of pouring my blood, sweat, and tears into this stall, the equipment and location alone were worth more than that.

"$500,000. I won't sell it for a cent less," I said through gritted teeth.

Daniel pulled me aside and hissed under his breath. "Are you out of your mind? Is this really the time to haggle over a few hundred thousand dollars? Sophie is waiting for the money to save her brother's life!

"What does someone like you know about running a business? You have no idea what you are talking about!"

He berated me mercilessly in front of an outsider.

My face burned with humiliation.

Just then, Susan showed up too. She was wearing an old, faded dress, her face pale and haggard.

The moment she arrived, she grabbed Walter's hand and pleaded through her tears, "Sir, please, I'm begging you to have mercy. My son is waiting for this money to save his life."

Then, she turned to the neighbors gathered around us and cried, "I've never been good at anything in my life. I only have this daughter, and now I have to trouble her adoptive mother's family to run around trying to save my son. I am truly a sinner."

She had chosen her words perfectly, making me look like some selfless saint.

Everyone's eyes turned toward me.

If I insisted on my price now, I would become the heartless villain who refused to save a dying man.

Daniel immediately stepped forward and caught the frail-looking Susan, soothing her gently. "Susan, please don't be like this. Emily is not that kind of person. She's just not thinking clearly right now."

The two of them played off each other perfectly, making me look like a complete clown.

In the end, I signed the contract for $300,000.

I looked at the scars on my arms left by years of hot-oil burns and felt like the past ten years had all been one big joke.

The money hit the account soon after.

Sophie took my bank card, saying she was going to the hospital to pay the $300,000 deposit.

I felt uneasy and said I wanted to go with her.

Daniel immediately stopped me. "What are you going for? Hospitals are crowded, and things can easily get lost. Just give the card to Sophie.

"You are just a breakfast-stall vendor. You can't help at the hospital anyway, so don't make things harder."

His tone was filled with contempt.

I handed the card to Sophie.

She took it and immediately threw herself into Susan's arms.

She cried out, "Mom, Evan can be saved!"

After crying for a while, she wiped her tears and slipped the card into Daniel's hand.

"Dad, I don't know how to handle something like paying the deposit. You should do it. I trust you to take care of it."

Daniel took the card and patted her shoulder affectionately. "Good girl. Don't worry. I'll take care of everything."

From beginning to end, neither of them even looked at me, much less thanked me.

That night, I quietly cleaned up the guest room.

Daniel came over and said, "Let Susan have the master bedroom. She is weak, and the guest room is too small for her to sleep comfortably."

I froze. "Then where are we supposed to sleep?"

"We will sleep in the guest room."

He said it as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, leaving me no room to argue.

I watched as Susan moved into the master bedroom that Daniel and I had shared for more than a decade. She did not hesitate in the slightest.

She even told Daniel to replace our wedding photo on the nightstand with a solo portrait of Sophie.

At that moment, I finally understood—this house was no longer my home.

The divorce went through smoothly. The court awarded me the house and the little savings Daniel and I had left.Daniel did not get a single cent.I had my lawyer tell him that I would let him and Sophie stay in the house he was living in rent-free for another three months. After that, they would have to move out.I heard that he and Sophie were still fighting over the nonexistent money from the supposed house sale, blaming each other and making a complete mess of things. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore. With the money the court awarded me, along with the savings I had built up from working, I leased a prime storefront on the corner with Michelle's help.I quit my job at the restaurant and threw myself into my new business. From hiring people to renovate the place, to shopping around for kitchen equipment, to going to city hall to apply for my business license, I handled everything myself.I worked from morning until night, like a tireless spinning top.I us

I refused Sophie's request. But only a few days later, they still tracked me down at the restaurant where I worked, like flies drawn to rot. That afternoon, there were not many customers. I was mopping the floor when I looked up and saw Daniel and Sophie standing at the entrance.Daniel had grown so thin that he was barely recognizable. Most of his hair had turned white, and he was hunched over like an old man.Sophie looked just as haggard. She was wearing a worn-out, pilled jacket and had none of the polished, put-together appearance she once had.The moment Daniel saw me, he dropped to his knees with a thud.He slapped himself hard, alternating between his hands. The smacks were so loud that everyone in the restaurant could hear them."Emily, I was wrong! I was a terrible husband! I let greed blind me!"He cried as he repeatedly slammed his forehead against the floor. It quickly turned red, thin streaks of blood appearing on his skin."Emily, come home with me. I swear I wi

After their scheme was exposed, Susan became a complete pariah in her hometown.Everywhere she went, people pointed at her and whispered behind her back. The lie about her son suffering from leukemia also became the biggest joke in the entire area. Before long, she could not take it anymore. She packed her things and slunk away, never to be heard from again.Sophie did not have it any easier. The scandal of her conspiring with her adoptive father to cheat her adoptive mother out of her house spread quickly. Her company fired her almost immediately. With the labels of "con artist" and "ungrateful daughter" following her everywhere, she could not find a decent job anywhere. With no source of income, she had no choice but to live off her credit cards, using one to pay off another. Before long, debt collectors were blowing up her phone with calls.Daniel was fired from his job and was formally reprimanded. The moment his mistress, Emma, saw that he had no money and had lost his j

My neighbor, Jessica, was warmhearted and louder than anyone I knew. She loved gathering with a group of older women in the neighborhood garden, chatting about everyone and everything.Early the next morning, she took her phone downstairs. The garden was already bustling.Jessica plopped down among the women and pretended to answer a call. Then, she turned on the speakerphone.Daniel's voice came through loud and clear. "Once the house is sold, Sophie promised to give me $500,000…"The older women around her instantly fell silent. Every pair of ears perked up."Good grief. Daniel looks so honest and harmless, but he's got quite the dark side.""No kidding. He's even plotting against his own wife for money."At that exact moment, Susan and Sophie happened to be walking back with grocery bags. They passed through the garden just as the recording played. The moment Susan heard $500,000, she froze in her tracks. She rushed over to Jessica and snatched the phone from her. After l

"Half? In your dreams!"The moment Daniel heard that, he flew into a rage.He lowered his voice, but the twisted look on his face was more frightening than a roar."Emily, have you gone crazy over money? The money from the house is supposed to save Sophie's brother! I will only get $500,000!"In his panic, he blurted out the deal he had made with Sophie.I let out a cold laugh. "$500,000? Daniel, you really think Sophie is going to give you that money?"I pulled out my old phone, opened the photo album, and shoved the screen right in front of him so he could see the pictures clearly. They were screenshots of his messages with Sophie.Sophie wrote, "Dad, don't worry. As soon as the house is sold, I'll transfer $500,000 to you."Daniel's face instantly went pale. He had never imagined that I had those screenshots.I did not stop. I swiped to the next one.Sophie texted, "Don't worry, Dad. I've already told my mom. Once we get the money, we'll just tell her Evan died and make s

The two of them immediately lit up with excitement.Watching their greedy faces, I continued, "But the deed is back in my hometown. I need to go back and get it."The moment I suggested going back for the deed, Daniel's eyes lit up.He practically jumped at the chance. "I'll go with you. It's not safe to travel alone. I'll come with you so you have someone looking out for you."I sneered quietly. He was afraid I would run away. Afraid I would transfer the deed somewhere else along the way.Fine by me. I had been looking for a chance to talk to him alone anyway. Before we left, the atmosphere at home was strange.Susan and Sophie busied themselves packing my things. They were so attentive, one would have thought I was not going home to get the deed but going off to be crowned queen. As I packed my clothes, I deliberately sighed in front of Susan."If we sell the house, Daniel and I will have to rent a place from now on. He has worked hard his whole life, and now that he is gett
