Chapter 1 Blood Runs Thicker Than Water

作者: Layne
I clutched the bank statement, my hands trembling uncontrollably. Every number printed on it felt like a red-hot brand searing into my heart.

It was the $200,000 my husband and I had saved for retirement. And now, not a single cent was left.

I rushed home, determined to get an explanation from my husband, Daniel Carter. But he was sitting calmly on the couch, taking a sip of coffee.

"Blood runs thicker than water. Stop being so selfish."

His words left my mind completely blank.

I stormed over to him and threw the bank statement in his face. "You knew all along?"

Daniel's expression darkened. Instead of looking at me, he pulled a medical report from his briefcase and tossed it onto the table. "Sophie's brother has leukemia."

He pointed at the report, his voice cold as ice. "Are you satisfied now? You accused your child without even asking why. How can you live with yourself?"

I stood there, stunned.

Leukemia.

The fire raging inside me was instantly extinguished by the mention of that illness.

Should I be heartbroken over my money, or should I feel guilty for being so 'uncaring'?

Just then, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered it, and his tone instantly softened. "Sophie, don't cry. Take your time."

Sophie Collins, our adopted daughter, sobbed on the other end of the line. "Dad, my mom fainted. The doctor said she has been worrying herself sick. What are we going to do about my brother's illness?"

"Don't worry. I'm coming right over. Let your mom get some rest. I'll make her some chicken soup."

Daniel hung up without even looking at me and got up to head for the kitchen.

I grabbed his arm. "Our retirement savings are gone, and you still have the heart to worry about someone else?"

Daniel shook off my hand and snapped furiously. "You are Sophie's mother too! As her adoptive mother, isn't taking care of her biological mother when she's sick the least you can do? How can you be so thoughtless?"

His shouting left me speechless.

Silently, I walked into the kitchen and made a pot of chicken soup.

I carried the thermos to the hospital.

When I pushed open the hospital room door, Daniel was sitting beside the bed, carefully tucking the blankets around Susan Parker.

Sophie stood nearby with a towel, gently wiping the sweat from his forehead.

The three of them looked like a real family, while I stood in the doorway like an unwanted intruder.

"Emily, you're here." The moment Susan saw me, her eyes reddened, and she struggled to sit up. "Emily, it's all my fault. I dragged your family into this."

Daniel immediately pressed her back down and turned to me with an irritated look. "What are you waiting for? Can you not see that Susan is weak? Bring the soup over."

I set the thermos on the bedside table.

Susan grabbed my hand, tears streaming down her face. "Emily, I know this is hard for you, but if there had been any other way, I would never have come to trouble your family. Evan is only 19."

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.

"We will have to think carefully about what to do with the stall," I said quietly.

The moment the words left my mouth, Sophie suddenly dropped to her knees in front of me. "Mom! Please, I'm begging you. Save my brother! If you don't agree, I won't get up."

Her cries drew everyone's attention in the hallway.

Daniel's face instantly turned red.

He pointed a finger at me and shouted angrily, "Look what you've driven our daughter to! It's just some lousy little stall. How could it possibly be more important than a human life? I'm telling you, Emily, this is settled! I will find someone to take over the stall tomorrow!"

He was not asking for my opinion. He was ordering me around.

I looked at Sophie kneeling on the floor, then at Daniel's furious expression and Susan sobbing weakly in the hospital bed.

At that moment, I felt as if my whole world had collapsed.

The divorce went through smoothly. The court awarded me the house and the little savings Daniel and I had left.Daniel did not get a single cent.I had my lawyer tell him that I would let him and Sophie stay in the house he was living in rent-free for another three months. After that, they would have to move out.I heard that he and Sophie were still fighting over the nonexistent money from the supposed house sale, blaming each other and making a complete mess of things. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore. With the money the court awarded me, along with the savings I had built up from working, I leased a prime storefront on the corner with Michelle's help.I quit my job at the restaurant and threw myself into my new business. From hiring people to renovate the place, to shopping around for kitchen equipment, to going to city hall to apply for my business license, I handled everything myself.I worked from morning until night, like a tireless spinning top.I us

I refused Sophie's request. But only a few days later, they still tracked me down at the restaurant where I worked, like flies drawn to rot. That afternoon, there were not many customers. I was mopping the floor when I looked up and saw Daniel and Sophie standing at the entrance.Daniel had grown so thin that he was barely recognizable. Most of his hair had turned white, and he was hunched over like an old man.Sophie looked just as haggard. She was wearing a worn-out, pilled jacket and had none of the polished, put-together appearance she once had.The moment Daniel saw me, he dropped to his knees with a thud.He slapped himself hard, alternating between his hands. The smacks were so loud that everyone in the restaurant could hear them."Emily, I was wrong! I was a terrible husband! I let greed blind me!"He cried as he repeatedly slammed his forehead against the floor. It quickly turned red, thin streaks of blood appearing on his skin."Emily, come home with me. I swear I wi

My neighbor, Jessica, was warmhearted and louder than anyone I knew. She loved gathering with a group of older women in the neighborhood garden, chatting about everyone and everything.Early the next morning, she took her phone downstairs. The garden was already bustling.Jessica plopped down among the women and pretended to answer a call. Then, she turned on the speakerphone.Daniel's voice came through loud and clear. "Once the house is sold, Sophie promised to give me $500,000…"The older women around her instantly fell silent. Every pair of ears perked up."Good grief. Daniel looks so honest and harmless, but he's got quite the dark side.""No kidding. He's even plotting against his own wife for money."At that exact moment, Susan and Sophie happened to be walking back with grocery bags. They passed through the garden just as the recording played. The moment Susan heard $500,000, she froze in her tracks. She rushed over to Jessica and snatched the phone from her. After l

"Half? In your dreams!"The moment Daniel heard that, he flew into a rage.He lowered his voice, but the twisted look on his face was more frightening than a roar."Emily, have you gone crazy over money? The money from the house is supposed to save Sophie's brother! I will only get $500,000!"In his panic, he blurted out the deal he had made with Sophie.I let out a cold laugh. "$500,000? Daniel, you really think Sophie is going to give you that money?"I pulled out my old phone, opened the photo album, and shoved the screen right in front of him so he could see the pictures clearly. They were screenshots of his messages with Sophie.Sophie wrote, "Dad, don't worry. As soon as the house is sold, I'll transfer $500,000 to you."Daniel's face instantly went pale. He had never imagined that I had those screenshots.I did not stop. I swiped to the next one.Sophie texted, "Don't worry, Dad. I've already told my mom. Once we get the money, we'll just tell her Evan died and make s

The two of them immediately lit up with excitement.Watching their greedy faces, I continued, "But the deed is back in my hometown. I need to go back and get it."The moment I suggested going back for the deed, Daniel's eyes lit up.He practically jumped at the chance. "I'll go with you. It's not safe to travel alone. I'll come with you so you have someone looking out for you."I sneered quietly. He was afraid I would run away. Afraid I would transfer the deed somewhere else along the way.Fine by me. I had been looking for a chance to talk to him alone anyway. Before we left, the atmosphere at home was strange.Susan and Sophie busied themselves packing my things. They were so attentive, one would have thought I was not going home to get the deed but going off to be crowned queen. As I packed my clothes, I deliberately sighed in front of Susan."If we sell the house, Daniel and I will have to rent a place from now on. He has worked hard his whole life, and now that he is gett
