Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Mary Johnson
Three hours passed. Dario never came back to the firm.

I went home alone. The musty smell hit me the second I walked in, and I sneezed several times in a row.

All those bags, houses, cars Dario had given me over the years, I'd already handed everything over to Ayana to sell off.

There was nothing left here for me to hold onto.

It was a long time before Dario finally showed up.

"Camila, there's a family gathering tomorrow. Everyone's been asking about you."

He walked in as he spoke, then stopped short at the sight of my half-packed luggage.

"Camila, are you getting rid of these clothes?"

"Right, it's been five years. They're probably out of style anyway."

That's when I noticed Sofia standing right behind him.

My face went cold. I pointed at the door.

"Get out. I don't want to see you."

Sofia's smile froze, and her eyes welled up instantly.

Dario's brow furrowed too. He kept his voice low, barely holding back the edge in it.

"Camila, Sofia didn't mean anything by it. She just wanted to apologize to you. What happened back then, she really didn't do it on purpose."

Thinking about the baby I lost, my heart felt like it was being crushed in a fist. My voice came out ice cold.

"If she really wanted to atone, she'd get out of my life completely. Not show up in my face every single day, reminding me of the child I could've had."

"If she really wanted to atone, she wouldn't be living with you. She wouldn't have taken over the firm you promised me."

"Dario, stop lying to yourself."

Sofia ran out crying. Dario grabbed the gifts she'd brought and threw them out the door too.

"Camila, I'm sorry. I should've given you more time."

"But Sofia is my adopted sister after all. You two will have to find a way to get along."

His phone kept buzzing. He glanced at it a couple times, his tone growing stiffer.

"I'll have Sofia's designer come over and make you some new dresses. Consider it her apology to you."

"Think about it."

With that, he picked up his phone and headed to the study.

Through the door he'd left ajar, I could hear Sofia's broken sobs.

"But I'm your sister, aren't I? Dario, I can't take this. Why does she have to keep coming after me like this?"

"I've spent five years paying for what I did. What more do you want from me?"

"If she keeps treating me like this, I don't want to live anymore."

Dario rushed out in a panic. The second he saw me, he stopped in his tracks.

"Camila, I'm just worried Sofia might do something stupid."

"You know my father made me promise to take care of her before he died."

"I'll calm her down and come right back. Just wait for me, okay?"

I cut him off. "Go if you want to."

He didn't hesitate for a second. Grabbed his keys and ran out the door.

I folded the last coat into my suitcase and took one final look at the home I'd once dreamed of building a life in.

I pulled out my phone and booked a flight to New York.

After tomorrow's family gathering, I'd be gone for good.

  • She Was Never His   Chapter 9

I never saw Dario or Sofia again.Later, I heard from other lawyers that Sofia had died in prison. She never changed her ways behind bars. Still acted like she was the high and mighty princess of the Vitale family.Within a month of being locked up, she was throwing her weight around and bullying other inmates in her block, using the Vitale name as her shield. And because it was Vitale, no one dared to fight back. But people started noticing that the "Don Vitale" Sofia kept talking about never once showed up.Until one day, Sofia slapped a new inmate across the face. The woman dragged her to the side and beat her to death. Punch after punch, Sofia couldn't fight back at all.She lay on the ground screaming for help, but no one came to her aid.The guards didn't show up until it was too late. By then, Sofia was already on the floor, eyes wide open, not breathing. The surveillance cameras in that block just happened to be down that day. No evidence of how Sofia died. And the Vitale famil

On the fifth day after I returned to the Manhattan firm, I received the divorce papers from Dario.Inside was a handwritten letter.[Camila, I was wrong. I should set you free.][I don't expect you to forgive me. I just want you to be happy.][From now on, I won't show up in front of you anymore. I won't upset you again.]I flipped through the revised divorce agreement. He'd given me most of his assets.I didn't turn it down. I'd earned every bit of it.News of me beating Sofia spread fast through the legal world.Clients started coming to me on their own, handing me their cases.Business picked up so quickly that Ayana and I had to split the workload. She handled the client side. I managed the firm's team. Before long, we bought the entire office building where our firm was located.Ayana threw her arms around me, tears streaming down her face."Camila, we finally made it."When we were little, Ayana and I had promised each other we'd become top lawyers in New York and open a firm tog

Three months later, my client received the verdict in their favor.I hadn't even finished saying goodbye to my client outside the courthouse when Sofia came charging at me."Camila, you bitch. You must have bribed the judge. There's no other way you could've won.""This case was supposed to be mine. Only mine."She screamed as she lunged at me and shoved me hard.I wasn't prepared. I stumbled backward, off balance.Behind me was a long flight of stairs. I closed my eyes, bracing for the fall. But the impact never came. Instead, I landed in a firm pair of arms.Dario caught me, then spun around and shoved Sofia back several feet."Sofia, are you insane? You were trying to hurt Camila.""If I hadn't caught her, she'd be at the bottom of those stairs right now."I pulled myself out of Dario's arms, walked up to Sofia, and slapped her across the face."Sofia, I chose not to hold things against you. But you keep coming at me again and again.""I let it slide before because you were Dario's

I was the plaintiff's attorney in this case. In the first trial, the plaintiff had hired another firm, and Sofia—representing the defendant—had crushed them completely.By the time we got to the second trial, Sofia was full of confidence. She thought there was no way the outcome could change. In court, she stood there swearing up and down by her first-round arguments.I'd spent nights on end studying this case, and finally found the defendant's weak spots and supporting precedents.By day three, the momentum had shifted to my side. Sofia was visibly getting anxious.By day five, Sofia went running to Dario again, begging him to fix the case for her. When Dario showed up at my client's office with his men, I was sitting there with a cup of coffee, going through evidence with my client. He clearly hadn't expected to see me. He froze in place.Three months apart, and he'd lost weight. His normally immaculate black suit hung loose on him now.One of his new men pulled out a gun without mis

When I got off the plane, New York had just finished with a rain shower.I looked out at everything fresh and new outside the window and felt like I'd been given a new life too.Turns out, life without Dario wasn't as hard as I'd imagined.I flagged down a taxi. The driver smiled at me as I got in."Miss, everyone uses ride-hailing apps these days. You should give it a try."I murmured an "mm-hmm." So this was how much I'd missed in five years. The moment I walked into the firm, Ayana pulled me into a big hug."Camila, welcome back."Then my phone started blowing up with messages. Dario.[Camila, where did you go?][Are you really trying to divorce me? I won't agree to it.][Camila, I can't live without you. Please come back and see me.]All his words were frantic, desperate. I just calmly typed a few words and hit send.[Dario, contact me when you're ready to sign the papers.]I handed Ayana the video of Sofia pushing me down the stairs. That was all the evidence I could find. Unfortu

Dario never came back. It wasn't until ten minutes before the family gathering that he finally sent me a message.[Camila, come to the Vitale estate on your own.][Sofia said she couldn't breathe, her chest was so tight. I had to take her there.]I let out a bitter laugh. I was the one who'd just woken up from a coma, but Dario couldn't have cared less. The only person he truly cared about was Sofia. My phone buzzed three times in a row. An email from Ayana.I printed out the divorce agreement, signed my name, and left it on the living room table. Then I turned and walked out.By the time I got to the Vitale estate, everyone had been waiting for me for a while.Evelyn pulled me into a tight hug, her eyes already red."Camila, you're finally awake. You have no idea how much I missed you all these months you were out."I hugged her back. Leaving here, I was going to miss Evelyn. When I first married Dario, I didn't know the family business at all. Evelyn was the one who showed me the rop
