Half an hour later, Dario showed up breathless and pulled me into his arms."Camila, I'm so sorry. I got caught up with work and it completely slipped my mind.""Every time I stepped foot in this house after what happened to you, it hurt too much to bear."That familiar scent hit my nose, and I almost reached out to hold him tight."So I moved in with Sofia. She said she'd take care of me in your place."The moment those words left his mouth, I shoved him off with everything I had."Dario. Don't touch me."He stared at me in disbelief, then dropped his gaze. He took my hand again, his thumb tracing circles on my palm."Don't be like that, Camila. You know my heart's always been yours.""I already set up the law firm for you. We'll make up for those five lost years. Together."I didn't say no. Dario drove me to the firm's entrance, and I stood there staring at the lavish interior, completely lost in thought."Camila, that floor-to-ceiling window, you always wanted one. And the coffee sh

Dario never came back. It wasn't until ten minutes before the family gathering that he finally sent me a message.[Camila, come to the Vitale estate on your own.][Sofia said she couldn't breathe, her chest was so tight. I had to take her there.]I let out a bitter laugh. I was the one who'd just woken up from a coma, but Dario couldn't have cared less. The only person he truly cared about was Sofia. My phone buzzed three times in a row. An email from Ayana.I printed out the divorce agreement, signed my name, and left it on the living room table. Then I turned and walked out.By the time I got to the Vitale estate, everyone had been waiting for me for a while.Evelyn pulled me into a tight hug, her eyes already red."Camila, you're finally awake. You have no idea how much I missed you all these months you were out."I hugged her back. Leaving here, I was going to miss Evelyn. When I first married Dario, I didn't know the family business at all. Evelyn was the one who showed me the rop

I was the plaintiff's attorney in this case. In the first trial, the plaintiff had hired another firm, and Sofia—representing the defendant—had crushed them completely.By the time we got to the second trial, Sofia was full of confidence. She thought there was no way the outcome could change. In court, she stood there swearing up and down by her first-round arguments.I'd spent nights on end studying this case, and finally found the defendant's weak spots and supporting precedents.By day three, the momentum had shifted to my side. Sofia was visibly getting anxious.By day five, Sofia went running to Dario again, begging him to fix the case for her. When Dario showed up at my client's office with his men, I was sitting there with a cup of coffee, going through evidence with my client. He clearly hadn't expected to see me. He froze in place.Three months apart, and he'd lost weight. His normally immaculate black suit hung loose on him now.One of his new men pulled out a gun without mis

On the fifth day after I returned to the Manhattan firm, I received the divorce papers from Dario.Inside was a handwritten letter.[Camila, I was wrong. I should set you free.][I don't expect you to forgive me. I just want you to be happy.][From now on, I won't show up in front of you anymore. I won't upset you again.]I flipped through the revised divorce agreement. He'd given me most of his assets.I didn't turn it down. I'd earned every bit of it.News of me beating Sofia spread fast through the legal world.Clients started coming to me on their own, handing me their cases.Business picked up so quickly that Ayana and I had to split the workload. She handled the client side. I managed the firm's team. Before long, we bought the entire office building where our firm was located.Ayana threw her arms around me, tears streaming down her face."Camila, we finally made it."When we were little, Ayana and I had promised each other we'd become top lawyers in New York and open a firm tog
