POV Samantha

***

"I'm dark."

The line went dead. The silence that rushed in was absolute, a vacuum that sucked all the air and triumph from the opulent hotel suite in Barcelona. I stood frozen, my personal cell phone clutched in my hand, my gaze fixed on the antique trophy I had accepted just hours earlier. It sat on the mahogany desk, gleaming under the soft lamplight a symbol of my independence, my new life, and my victory.

It was now a monument to a terrible, naive joke.

The "New Contract" we had written, the one built on honesty, shared breakfasts, and a future free of shadows, had just been rendered void.

The "Old Contract," the one I thought we’d paid in full, the one signed in fear, survival, and violence had just been ruthlessly reactivated.

My first instinct was primal. Run. I looked at my luggage, half-packed for my triumphant return home. I needed to be on the next flight. I needed to get to Los Angeles. I needed to be with Benjamin, to be the shield, to be the partner, t

The Next Morning..."H-hello..."I couldn’t believe the sight in front of me.Of all people to disturb my sleep—it had to be them.Standing right outside my door were two of the overly persistent men from yesterday."Hi, Monica! Good mornin—"Carl didn’t even get to finish his greeting because I slammed the door in his face the moment I recovered from the shock."Ahhm, Monica? Good morning!" he continued from outside, as if I hadn’t just shut him out."Monica, you woke up as beautiful as ever!" Alfonso chimed in, his voice loud and annoyingly cheerful. "Sorry for the disturbance, but Carl and I brought breakfast for you and the kids! We made sure it’s delicious, so please enjoy it!" "What are you two doing here?! And how the hell did you even find out where we live?!" I snapped through the door, my irritation rising fast. They were already ruining my day—and it wasn’t even 8 a.m. yet."Oh, that? We pestered Alex until he finally gave us your address!" Carl replied unapologetically. "

"Then... who is our daddy if it’s not them? Is it you?" my daughter asked Frank.I could see the way her eyes searched his face, uncertain and hesitant... but still hopeful. Like a part of her was silently wishing Frank would say yes.Frank, probably caught off guard, scratched the back of his neck, his usual composure slipping for the first time. His gaze briefly flickered to me, and I could see the inner debate playing out behind his eyes."Uhm... no," he said carefully. "Your real dad isn’t one of us."His voice turned more serious, and suddenly, I felt a knot of anxiety twist in my stomach."But... I do know who he is."My heart sank.Seriously?I immediately stepped in before he could say another word."Sweethearts, how about we head home now, hmm?" I said, trying to sound as calm and cheerful as I could, hoping to steer the conversation away before it spiraled any further."But Mommy!" Victoria protested, her eyes growing wider with insistence. "Mr. Frank said he knows who our d

"Y-Yeah, he is married—""See? You know that!" I snapped, my voice rising with fury. "Then why are you still insisting that your friend loves me? He’s married!""H-Hey, that’s not what I meant—""Then what are you trying to say? That I should become his mistress now? Is that what you want?" I demanded, eyes narrowing."Wait! Yes, he’s married, but from what I know... he doesn’t even love his wife." Alfonso blurted out."Oh, and that’s supposed to be my problem now?" I shot back, my voice dripping with disbelief."Why should I trust anything you say? For all I know, you’re just trying to win me over—to make me drop my guard—so you can help Davison take my child away from me!""Hey! We would never do that!" Frank shot back as well."If Davison really hurt you, then we won’t just stand by and tolerate it," he added, more composed now. "We’re not here to make excuses for him, Monica. Honestly... we just want him to realize what he did wrong. That’s all. But please—don’t think we came here

Monica’ PoV"Mommy!!!"Victoria cried out joyfully the moment she saw me, her voice as loud as ever, echoing through the hallway as she ran into my arms.Christy, on the other hand, simply hugged me tightly without saying a word. But even as I embraced them both, my gaze turned cold as it locked onto the group of men standing just outside my children’s classroom—men I never expected to see here. Not now. Not like this.My eyes quickly narrowed at Alex. Of course. I had a feeling he was behind all of this.I knew I couldn’t trust him. He went and told his friends about this—about me—without even waiting a day to pass. He couldn’t even keep it to himself for 24 hours. Unbelievable."...Monica?"I heard Alfonso’s stunned voice as he caught sight of me, his expression mirroring the shock on the faces of the two other men with him—both standing frozen, eyes wide, staring not just at me but at the two children holding onto me.But I didn’t give any of them the satisfaction of a response.I

’Damn! They’re two adorable twins!’ Alfonso though while staring at the girls in disbelief.Frank and Carl couldn’t help but gape in amazement too."Whoa, they look exactly alike! It’s like I’m looking at two dolls!" Carl blurted out.His expression, however, only made Christy inch closer to Victoria, her eyes narrowing. From her point of view, Carl looked like he might just eat them alive."Ahem... What’s your name, baby girl?" Frank asked Christy, trying his best to stay composed in front of the unbelievably cute twins."I—I don’t talk to strangers..." Christy replied coldly, her eyes sharp and guarded.Alex couldn’t help but chuckle. Just last night, Christy had treated him like a stranger too. Good thing she seemed to be that way with everyone she had just met."Ahem, we’re not strangers," Alfonso said, offering a gentle smile. "We’re actually friends of your Uncle Alex.""So what?" Christy shot back, brows furrowed as she crossed her arms. The three men glanced at one another—mom

None of the four noticed that one of the mischievous twins had been quietly trailing behind them—and now, Victoria was standing right beside them, staring up curiously at the group. She had heard everything."Uncle," she piped up, calling out to Alex while tilting her head adorably."What does ’You fuckers, what the hell are you doing here?’ mean? Is that some kind of greeting?"The color instantly drained from Alex’s face. His glare vanished as shock took over—he hadn’t even realized Victoria was there, let alone that she’d heard him say that. For a moment, he stood frozen, unsure how to respond to the innocent question coming from the small voice beside him.The three men turned their attention to the cute little girl now clinging to the hem of Alex’s shirt. She blinked up at them, wide-eyed with curiosity. The moment her eyes met theirs, the trio stiffened—paralyzed as if they’d been turned to stone on the spot."Uncle, are these your friends?"Alex didn’t answer. He simply gave a
