Chapter 2

Author: Bright Lights
The voices wouldn't stop fighting in my head, and it was giving me a splitting headache.

Just as I was about to get up and head to the bathroom to clear my head, Vicky—who had been lying next to me—suddenly got up and walked out onto the balcony.

The room wasn't large, and the bed was right next to the balcony. So, even though she deliberately lowered her voice on the phone, I could still hear every word she said outside the door.

"Are you sure he's from a wealthy family? He sure doesn't look like it to me."

Who was she talking to? And who told her about my wealthy family background?

The questions kept racing through my head.

In the past, I used to fall asleep the moment my head hit the pillow, so Vicky probably assumed I was already asleep when she made that call and didn't bother hiding the conversation from me.

I held my breath, straining to hear the voice on the other end of the line, but to no avail. I could only hear Vicky's voice.

"You'd better make sure this works, or you could end up losing more than you gain," she said. "I told him I wanted to get married, but he said he didn't have the money for it. It's probably just a test. Are you sure your idea is going to work?"

By then, I had a pretty clear picture of everything. At the very least, that video had been real, and Vicky had indeed found out about my secret wealth and was after my money.

My heart eventually grew cold at that thought.

I could accept that Vicky liked money. I wouldn't have minded spending my money on her. To me, it was a given that I'd shower my girlfriend with the best I could give her.

However, I couldn't accept that she was only dating me to siphon off my wealth and spend it on another man instead.

Eventually, the voice on the balcony stopped abruptly, and Vicky soon returned to the bedroom.

I hurriedly closed my eyes, feigning sleep. I felt her eyes on me for a while, but when she saw I looked sound asleep, she sighed in relief.

After making sure she was fast asleep next to me, I got up and went into the bathroom. But when I came back, I still couldn't fall asleep.

I thought she'd accepted my confession and agreed to date me because I'd won her over with my sincerity. I never imagined that she was only with me for my money.

Over the past three years, I'd put her on a pedestal like she was my god. I'd fallen in love with her at first sight, and I'd made it a point to shower her with everything she liked to win her favor.

I memorized every one of her preferences and catered to her every whim. Even before I inherited my fortune, I scraped together what little I had from my meager allowance to buy her luxury goods.

I was thrilled when she finally agreed to be my girlfriend. I honestly thought Cupid's arrow had finally struck her the way it had struck me, and that we'd finally end up together.

But now, I found out she was nothing but a con artist trying to scam me out of my money in the name of love.

My nose tingled with emotion at the thought, but I refused to let my tears fall.

Now that I knew the truth, it was time for me to wake up. No romance or affection of the sort was worth losing my money over.

And since I now knew that Vicky was only dating me for my money, I wondered what would happen if I just kept up the charade of being poor.

How did she even find out about my true identity? Who exactly had she been contacting?

I decided to keep playing the fool until I finally got to the bottom of things. I didn't sleep a wink all night and just lay in bed with my eyes wide open until the next day.

Vicky and I got up at the crack of dawn to prepare for work. Just before we went our separate ways, she suddenly looked at me with a hesitant expression, as though she had something she wanted to say.

In the past, I would have immediately ambled over to her and fussed, asking what was on her mind. But now, I pretended not to notice, simply waiting for her to approach me.

When she realized I had no intention of asking what she was thinking, she spoke up.

"Colin, don't you think that it's just a hassle to take the subway to work every day? Why don't we buy a car instead?"

I knew full well that this was a test. However, I chose to play dumb and feigned shock, staring at her in utter bewilderment.

"But aren't you usually living paycheck to paycheck every month? How could you possibly afford to buy a car?"

"Also, what I'm showing onstage here today is just a part of the evidence," I said. "The rest has already been submitted to court. You can expect to receive a court summons."Vicky realized her marriage certificate was fake when she saw Hugo's reaction. She collapsed to the ground and wailed, "Colin Atkinson! Did you really have to ruin us like this?"I couldn't fathom their way of thinking. They were the ones who had plotted against me in the first place, yet they acted as though I were the one targeting them all along."I didn't ruin you. You ruined yourselves," I said. "If you'd just lived your lives honestly, would you have ended up like this?"But Vicky refused to listen to a word I said. She just kept sobbing and begging for forgiveness. Hugo sat on the floor, glaring at me with pure malice in his eyes. It looked as though he was ready to lunge at me and take us both down together.I frowned. They really were a pair of wretched people, an absolute eyesore and nuisance to s

I continued, "I failed to see people for who they really were and nearly got scammed. And now, I'm exposing these people and making it public as a warning to all of you."Some people may look the part, but in reality, they're capable of nothing but the dirtiest, filthiest, and most despicable deeds ever known."Vicky and Hugo stared at the evidence displayed on the stage, completely dumbfounded. They had no idea how I could have gathered all of this. All this time, they'd been too busy pressuring me to get a divorce and lining up their next targets to even keep a guard up against me, thinking I was just a broke person who couldn't possibly stir up any more trouble for them.Hugo was the first to snap back to his senses and scramble to defend himself."Colin! We were just kidding! Besides, it's not like you've actually lost anything, have you?"I wondered where he got the audacity to say such a thing at a time like this."Just because I didn't suffer a loss doesn't mean you didn'

Hugo sounded like he was defending me, but every word he said was accusing me of sneaking into the banquet.I smiled mockingly at them. If it weren't for me, he and Vicky wouldn't even have had the chance to get close to the doors of this gala tonight. And yet, here they were, strutting around like they were the upper crust, looking down on me. "How do you know that I wasn't invited here?" I asked.Vicky immediately rolled her eyes. In a disdainful tone, she said, "Why would anyone ever think of inviting a broke-ass idiot like you? Did you think you were still a wealthy heir?"Our little exchange drew the attention of the nearby guests, who cast strange, judgemental glances our way.Hugo's expression darkened. He was extremely protective of his image, and he refused to be embarrassed in a setting like this.He grabbed my arm and tried to drag me out of the venue. "That's enough, Colin. This isn't a place for you or your antics. "Now, get out. You can find Vicky again after t

Hugo kept playing the role of the perfect supporting character, offering me advice by my side, saying things like, "You know that you can't force love to happen when it's not meant to be. Just let it go."He would work in perfect sync with Vicky and whistle the same tune. I was getting really curious about how they'd react the moment they finally learned the truth.…Either my acting was simply too good, or Vicky and Hugo were overconfident in their plans, because they both began to let their guard down completely around me. They were singularly focused on persuading me to agree to the divorce so that they could find their new target.Meanwhile, I managed to gather plenty of evidence of their criminal activities. As it turned out, they were both actually repeat offenders.Back in their school days, Vicky and Hugo had already swindled a handful of people out of their money, even though the amount involved was relatively small then. It wasn't until Hugo found me and realized I was

The thing was, I had never told Hugo about my family background either. So how had he found out?Vicky started complaining as soon as she sat down. "What bad luck! I thought Colin was loaded as fuck! Turns out he was just nothing but an idiot!"Hugo's voice sounded from the surveillance cameras. "That can't be right. I saw the documents about his parents' inheritance."So that was how he'd found out about it.I had simply set the document on the table when my lawyer delivered it to me, so he must have caught a glimpse of it when he came looking for me then.Suddenly, a cold chill ran down my spine. Had everything been orchestrated from the very start after all?"Yeah, he did get the inheritance, but he's already spent it all. And he's another six million dollars in debt," Vicky revealed.Hugo was shocked. "Are you sure about that? Colin's always been a very frugal person. How could he have possibly gone through all of that money at once?"Vicky clicked her tongue impatiently an

"You're telling me you spent all of that money already?" Vicky asked me, forcing a semblance of composure despite her strained, awkward smile. "You're joking, right?"She looked at me desperately and hopefully, as though she were begging me to admit I was just pulling her leg.I shook my head, letting my eyes redden at just the right moment. I spoke rather aggrievedly."Don't you already know my financial situation by now? I even have to ask you to send me money to get lunch. How could I possibly have any of it left?"But hey, it's alright, yeah? As long as we work hard together, I'm sure we'll get richer one day and live a more comfortable life afterward."Uh, but in the meantime… Could you please help me pay off my debts? You're my wife now, so you'll help me, right?"I reached out to hug her as I spoke, but she shoved me away. Her face was deathly pale, and she swayed on her feet as though she were about to collapse."I need to make a call."Then, she grabbed her bag and hur
