POV: Avery

"Give me your hand," Elliot said, kneeling beside me. "You can't stand up alone." He pulled me up from the snow before I could answer.

My legs were shaking, and the shock marks on my ribs burned with every move. I leaned on the steel door and looked at the keypad. The red light was still blinking.

"The lock is stuck," I said. "It stays closed for five minutes after wrong codes."

"Then we wait here?" Elliot asked. He looked around the dark parking lot with his gun still in his hand.

A pair of headlights moved slowly at the end of the road. Elliot pulled me down behind a stack of old pallets and covered my mouth with his hand. The car turned the corner and left, and neither of us moved for a full minute.

"That could be Vanessa's friends," he whispered when we stood up. I counted the seconds in my head until the light turned green. Then I typed my real code and pressed my thumb on the pad, and the door clicked open.

Inside, the warehouse was warm. The new heater hummed in the corner, and I almost cried from the feeling on my skin. Elliot closed the door behind us and locked it twice.

I dropped on the bed and pulled up my shirt. The skin on my ribs was red and swollen with two round burns. Elliot took the medical kit from the shelf and knelt in front of me.

He cleaned the burns with cold hands, and I held my breath. He didn't flinch when I hissed in pain.

I wondered how many wounds he had treated before. "Why did you save me?" I asked.

"I need a place to hide when the cold comes," Elliot said, wrapping a bandage around my ribs. "In exchange, I will help you survive it."

"Help me how?" I asked. "You saved my life, but I don't know anything about you."

"I will help you understand the apocalypse system," Elliot said. He tied the bandage and sat back.

"What system?" I asked. "There was no system in my last life."

"Not now," Elliot said. "If I tell you everything today, you won't believe me."

"That's not an answer," I said. "You can't ask for my help and keep secrets."

"I'm not asking for your trust," Elliot said. "I'm asking for a door."

I wanted to throw him out, but he had shot Vanessa without blinking. He had also cut my ropes with careful hands. Finally, I pointed to the corner by the shelves.

"Stay there," I said. "And don't touch anything."

Elliot didn't stay there. He walked around the warehouse and checked every door, window and camera. He knew exactly where to look, like he had done this many times before.

"Your back door has no camera," he said from the far wall. "Anybody can come through there."

"How do you know so much about cameras?" I asked.

"I worked in security," Elliot said, and he looked away.

I noticed the way he looked away. It was the same look Damien used to give me when I asked about his phone.

My phone buzzed on the desk, and Elliot's phone buzzed too. The alert said a severe winter storm was coming and everyone must seek shelter now. It was sent only seconds ago.

Before I could speak, the lights flickered. Then they went out, and the generator in the corner roared to life. I could hear the wind outside, even through a foot of concrete.

I breathed out and saw white smoke come from my mouth. The heater was on, but the cold was already coming through the walls. In minutes it had dropped like someone opened a freezer.

"It's starting," I whispered. "But it's six days early."

In my last life, the cold came slowly over many days. Now it was hitting all at once, and my stomach turned cold. I had planned for a slow freeze, not this.

Elliot didn't look surprised. He walked to the small window and watched the snow fall. "Then it will be worse than I thought," he said quietly.

"Worse than you thought?" I turned to him. "You knew something about today?"

"I knew it was close," Elliot said. "Not this close."

Then a loud bang hit the front door. Then another and another. Someone was pounding on it with both hands.

I ran to the security monitor with my hand on my ribs. Four people were standing in the snow in front of the camera, shaking. I knew every one of them.

Victor, the older man who drove the van. Helen, the woman who tried to stop Vanessa. Tyler, who tied my wrists, and Nathan, who held my legs.

"Avery, please open the door!" Helen cried through the door. "We're freezing out here!"

"We're sorry for what we did," Victor shouted. "Please, we will die out here!"

"I'll do anything you want!" Tyler screamed. His face was blue, and his hands were already shaking.

"Please, Avery! My feet are freezing!" Nathan cried, hitting the door with his fist.

I looked at the screen, then at the keypad. These were the people who tied me up and shocked me. But in my last life, I was the one begging outside a door.

Behind me, Elliot said nothing, but I could feel him watching me. My finger stayed frozen in the air above the keypad.

POV: Avery"Open the door, Avery!" Diane screamed, hitting the steel with both fists. "Your sister is freezing out here!" On the screen, Chloe was bent over with her arms around her belly, and her lips were turning gray."Please, Avery," Gerald shouted over the wind. "We tried three places on the way here, and every door was locked." Snow covered his hair, and he kept rubbing his hands together."My cards don't work, Avery," Damien said, stepping close to the camera. "The banks are down, and I can't touch a single dollar." His coat was soaked, and his teeth were shaking so hard I could hear them through the speaker. My hand stayed above the keypad. I wanted to say no, but then I saw Chloe drop to her knees in the snow, and I heard her laugh from that window again. My chest was so tight I could not breathe right."She's pregnant, Avery," Helen said softly behind me. "Whatever they did to you, the baby did nothing." She was holding her daughter's photo in her hand, and I knew why she sa

My eyes stayed on the monitor, where Nathan had fallen to his knees in the snow. His lips were turning purple."Avery, please," Helen cried, and she pressed her face close to the camera. "I told Vanessa to stop. You heard me in the factory.""She lied to us, Avery," Victor said, shouting over the wind. "She told us you had already agreed to share. We did not know she would hurt you.""Vanessa had her own plan," Elliot said. "That much is true. But that doesn't make them safe."Outside, Nathan fell flat on the snow and stopped moving. Tyler dragged him up by the arm and slapped his face to keep him awake. I could not watch them die at my door."Okay," I said, and my hand moved to the keypad. "But I have rules, and you will follow every one." I knew exactly how that cold felt.Elliot didn't stop me. He only stepped aside and kept his gun low, ready. When the lock

POV: Avery"You came," the woman said. "My name is Vanessa. I thought you won't come." She was standing in the middle of the room on the second floor of the factory.I stayed near the door with my hand on the gun inside my jacket. I had bought it from the thug down the rough neighbourhood before coming here.Five more people sat in a circle on the floor, and all of them turned to look at me.I told myself I would only listen. If it was a trap, I had my gun."Were you the one who called me the other day?" I asked."I am." Vanessa pointed around the circle. "That is Victor, Helen, Tyler and Nathan." Then she nodded at a man sitting alone in the corner. "And that is Elliot."The others smiled at me, but Elliot didn't. He just watched me with calm eyes, like he was measuring me. I looked away first."Why am I here?" I asked."Because we're all the same," Vanessa said. "Everyone in this room died in the apocalypse and came back. So apparently we were all reborn."My chest went tight. She

  • She's Done Begging    Chapter 4: Uninvited Guests

POV: AveryFor the next three days I turned the warehouse into a home. I paid contractors double to fix the heater in two days. I put heavy locks on every door and cameras around the building. One corner had a bed, a small kitchen and a desk. I even set a small heater by the bed. The rest was shelves full of canned food, water, medicine, batteries and fuel. On the fourth day, I was checking the new heater when the security monitor beeped.I had called that woman's number again and again, and it never went through. In the end I gave up and pushed it aside. Maybe I shouldn't have.A black sedan was parked outside my door. My mother stepped out of the driver's seat, and my father got out from the other side. Then the back doors opened, and Chloe climbed out with her hand on her belly, and Damien came out last in a long, expensive coat. All four of them walked toward the door together. My blood ran cold. I hadn't told a single person where I was. How did they know?I stood frozen in fro

POV: Avery"Fourteen, twenty-seven, thirty-three, forty-one, fifty-eight. Mega Ball nine." I read the numbers out loud with my phone shaking in my hand. I was still half asleep, but I woke up fast.I pulled the ticket from my pocket and checked every digit twice. They matched perfectly. Three hundred and forty million dollars.I sat on the floor breathing hard. In my last life, I died with nothing, frozen outside a warm cabin while my family laughed. Now I had more money than most people see in ten lifetimes. The lottery office opened at nine, so I used the two hours to plan. The apocalypse would start in eleven days. I needed shelter, heat, food and security, and my small studio couldn't give me any of it.At the office, the receptionist looked bored until I said the amount. Her eyes went wide. "Please have a seat. Someone will be with you shortly."Ten minutes later, three officials were checking my ticket and my ID. They said I could take annual payments for thirty years, or a lum
