Chapter 4: Can Alex be the Culprit?

I was out of the hospital as I needed some air. I couldn’t figure out why was everything crumbling down once again. Maybe Hailey was fine right now, she wouldn’t be once she wakes up and this is gonna haunt her for a really long time.

I received a call, so I picked it up.

“Hello?” I spoke.

“Hello, is this Mr. Robert?”

“Yes, may I know who is calling?”

“Nope”

I knew something was strange. “Who are you?”

“Your death”

“Well, I don’t fear you”

“Oh we will see when you face me”

“Just tell me who the hell are you!”

The call ended and I felt something dangerous was coming and, to be honest, I was a little scared. I didn’t wanna mess in those things again and I just wanted a happy life with Hailey now. This is cruel.

I searched the number on truecaller but of course, it wasn’t there, so I sent it to Cane. I haven’t contacted him for a year. I know he will be shocked but I need to contact him. This man who just called me didn’t seem to be a prank or a joke. This was serious business and I know how big it could be.

I received a call.

“Hello?”

“Boss?” 

It felt good to be contacted by Cane again. “Hey Cane”

“Uh… what was the number you sent?”

“Actually, I have been contacted by a suspicious man giving me death threats so…”

“Okay, boss. You know--”

“I am not your boss, Cane. Call me Robert”

“But it feels weird” he sighed. “Ah, just let me call you boss”

“Alright. So, what were you saying?”

“Oh yeah, I was saying that you know that we will find about the number in 24 hours and if it is high security then 32 hours but it will be found sooner or later”

“oh you have improved, I see”

“Oh yeah, boss. The new hackers have given way too much help in our life”

“That is good, Cane. I hope you and Ron both are happy”

“Yeah um… actually Ron is kind of, um, in love with someone…”

“Oh yeah? Ron? Really?”

“Yup, boss”

“Well, you are damn good if you are handling this on your own”

“Ah, how do you know boss? Because I didn’t say that he wasn’t helping”

“Well, a man in love… knows there isn’t anything worth fighting for other than his woman” 

I heard silence. “Woah boss, this is quite strange to hear from you”

“Oh yes, I am not the heartless boss anymore”

“Yeah. Thanks, boss”

“Thanks, Cane, and good luck. I also look forward to talking with Ron, when he is… uh done with his love life”

“haha, sure boss. Thank you again”

“Anytime. Bye”

“Bye boss”

The call ended and I looked up at the sky. Are you looking at us, Max? See! So much has changed since you left us. Look! Even Ron has fallen in love! Can you imagine this! Woah, right? And even I… I fell in love and this… this all feels good… but I can’t imagine… how good… how good it would have been if you were here…

Oh Max, can you come back? Please, Max… I need you…

My eyes moistened and I wiped the tears. I know that Max is and will always be the best and the most loyal man I had and losing him was the worst. When I found out he was dead, I was unsure what I wanted.

Did I want him to be bad? To believe that someone so close to me betrayed me?

Or did I want to believe that someone so good and someone so close to me left me?

And now when I think about all this, I hate myself for thinking like that, Max. You were a blessing in disguise. Thank you, Max, for everything.

I went back inside to Hailey’s ward and saw her lying on the bed, still sleeping. I don’t know who did it but if it was Nicholson… I mean Alex… if he had something to do with it, he is dead this time.

I believe that he didn’t do anything. But we never know!

I sat beside her and looked at her. She is so beautiful. The nurse entered the ward and I looked at her.

“Yes?” I asked.

“Mr. Alex came to meet her”

“But she is asleep. He will meet her later”

“Okay”

She left and I sighed. I don’t know if I should even let him close to her.
