Chapter 4

Author: Bebe Lamb
I was completely stunned. So, this was how he defined our relationship.

Charles realized he'd said something wrong. He walked over and ruffled my hair. "Be good. Don't make a fuss. I was out of line just now."

After he finished talking, he didn't even care about how I felt. He grabbed his jacket and left. I sat on the couch, not understanding what was going through his head.

He'd clearly been in love with someone else all along, yet he still chose to be with me. Then, when I finally started to care about him, he turned around and went after other women. And now that his true love was back, I offered to leave, but he wouldn't even take that.

He didn't love me, but he wouldn't let me go. I thought about it for a while and couldn't figure out how his mind worked.

I guess I could only blame it on him being a jerk. He really thought he could have it all. Well, he might be a jerk, but I was dead set on leaving him for good.

After we parted on bad terms, Charles didn't contact me for a whole week. Without having to wait on him anymore, I suddenly had way too much free time.

I boxed up almost everything in the house and sent it to a resale shop. I didn't even leave the vases or decorations behind. The price they offered left me pretty satisfied.

Seeing the balance in my bank account go up again, all my gripes about Charles vanished.

Who would hate money, after all?

To ensure I could run off with my money without drawing suspicion, I decided to throw Charles a bit off.

I went on social media and posted a touched-up selfie. I deliberately darkened the shadows under my eyes to look even more like Charlotte.

Then, I wrote the caption, "I don't need a lot of money. I just want a lot of love."

That post seemed to please Charles. He messaged me, saying he'd come home that evening. After a week off, I felt a bit rusty getting back into this "job."

When Charles came back, he was shocked by what he saw. "Was the place robbed?"

The sprawling villa only had a few large items of furniture left. Everything else had been swept clean.

I went over and deftly helped him out of his suit jacket. "No. Looking at all that stuff was giving me a headache, so Mark took it away to sell them."

"Then go pick out new things. Charge it to my card."

I wrapped my arms around Charles' neck. "Have a drink with me tonight."

He was about to agree when his phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the screen and picked up immediately. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of the caller's name. It was Charlotte.

"Chloe, something's come up at the company. I have to go take care of it."

I tugged on his hand. "Charles, can't you stay?"

"Don't mess around. This project's really important."

I didn't push it any further. Letting go, I looked at him for a long moment. "Alright, then. Be safe."

I admit I was being selfish. After all, he was once the person I had loved so deeply. I wanted to have a proper farewell at the end of our story.

But when it came down to choosing between me and Charlotte, I was the one he threw away. I looked around the house where I had spent three years. I didn't feel anything for it anymore.

Then, I got on a plane and left Hullston without looking back.

Charles bowed to my father and left. I sprinted back to my room before my father came inside. Through a gap in the curtains, I watched him amble into the courtyard with a relieved smile on his face.Without warning, tears started rolling down my cheeks. Once again, he'd cleaned up my mess. My father was the one who'd truly nurtured me like a precious rose in this barren, desolate northwest. After Charles left, my life went back to normal. I didn't ask about what happened in Hullston, but Regina just couldn't help spilling all the gossip.I became Charles' true love. He kept being with women who looked like me, but he never chose Charlotte in the end. However, Charlotte didn't want to give up. She pulled the same old trick at Charles' grandmother's 70th birthday. They got caught in bed together.Charles' grandmother fainted on the spot and wound up in the hospital. His mother tried to pay Charlotte off again, but Charlotte was pregnant this time.Charlotte refused to back down and

Charles wouldn't give up and moved into a hotel in town. He waited at the school gates every day. Jordan wanted to go talk it out with him, but I didn't want him caught up in my old relationship drama, so I stopped him."Just ignore him. He doesn't matter to me. One day, he'll get it through his head and leave."So, the villagers got used to seeing this strange sight every day. Jordan and I walked side by side up ahead while Charles trailed after us, glaring at Jordan like a kid whose favorite toy had been snatched away.In the end, we couldn't hide it from my father. He got so angry that he charged Charles with his walking stick."You haven't hurt my daughter enough? Now you come here to ruin her reputation? "Don't think you can push us around just because your family's got money. I'm not scared of you. I won't let you bully my daughter!"Charles didn't dodge. He took those blows head-on."Mr. Borne, I know you're angry because of what I did to Chloe. Everything that happened

Charles was wearing a tailored suit, completely out of place here."Chloe, there's a limit to throwing tantrums. You've really gone too far this time!"His very first words were enough to turn my stomach. I didn't want to deal with him, so I walked right past him.He grabbed my arm. "Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for you? If I hadn't seen that video, you'd be impossible to find! "And who's that man? We haven't even broken up yet. Did you come all the way to this dump to teach because of him? What could you possibly teach, anyway?"I answered casually, "Oh, I'm teaching the girls how to score a rich boyfriend who's never home."That really tore him down. His eyes went bloodshot, and he snapped, "Chloe, what's that supposed to mean? Am I nothing but a teaching tool to you?""Of course not."Before he could get his hopes up, I added, "You're a bad example because you kept coming home. Besides, I find you gross, so I wouldn't even use you as an example."Charles

The man held out his hand to me and introduced himself. "Hello, Ms. Borne. I'm Jordan Paterson. I'm working here as a village officer. Just graduated from college in Hullston."Mr. Borne said you want to build a school in the village, so I'm here to get some details."He was nothing like any man I'd met in Hullston. He wore a simple black tank top and had a buzz cut. His eyes were sharp, and he looked distant and unapproachable. The bare arms he showed had clearly defined muscles. His identity and appearance were so at odds that I couldn't process it right away."A village officer fresh out of college?"He looked at me, his dark eyes glinting with a hint of amusement. "Why? Do I not look like a fresh graduate, or do I not look like a village officer?"Jordan was efficient. That very day, he called together other village officers from the surrounding villages to discuss building the school. They were from colleges all over, full of passion and eager to help. They just hadn't foun

As soon as I landed, I saw my father waiting for me upon arrival. His hair was almost all gray, and he craned his neck, searching for me. I ran over and stood in front of the tanned older man."It's good you're home. Good. You're not leaving again, are you?"I fought to hold back tears and shook my head. I'd known since childhood that he wasn't my biological father. He'd found me abandoned in a trash heap and brought me home. With me as a burden, no woman was willing to marry him. When I was younger, people used to curse me as a bastard child. He, who normally had such a good temper, would go to their homes and say, "Chloe is my daughter. Anyone who calls her a bastard again will answer me!"He'd only let the matter drop once those kids apologized. As I got older, my tuition and living costs kept piling up, making it harder for him to manage.I considered dropping out for a while. I went into town and got a front-desk job at a hotel. It was the first time he ever got mad at me.
