"Whoah!"

What the heck!

She abruptly stopped midway into the living room as soon as she saw the big furry beast that stood in her way.

Bark! Bark!

She frequently reflected on what it would be like to have a pet. Yet, the reality of living in an orphanage and constantly moving between foster homes made that dream unattainable.

"Good boy..." She knew she had to calm down, even though the big beast scared the crap out of her.

Honestly, the dog did not seem that terrifying, but she had no experience with animals. Except for the stray dogs and cats on the street, she had never dealt with pets before.

Grrrwl!

She did not know if she should turn back and run or stay and win the dog over to her side. The latter seemed to be the more sensible thing to do, knowing she could not outrun the furry animal.

"... Easy boy!" But how to tame a barking dog? She still needed to figure it out, fast.

"You're a good boy, right?" She assumed a dog like that had some training. But still, she was a stranger.

“What are you doing, Andrew?” Matt could still hear his father’s voice inside his head as he lifted the glass of whiskey to his lips and drank its entire contents in one gulp. The strong drink scorched through his esophagus before it settled in his stomach, creating a warmth that was supposed to calm him. The lack of rage in his old man’s tone was not what bothered him. Instead, it was the calmness in his demeanor. In his experience, his father was more treacherous when he was not shouting at the top of his lungs. It was moments like these that made him more wary of his father’s intentions. Refilling the empty glass half-full of his favorite drink, he stared at its clear amber, comparing it to the turmoil that was growing inside him. Alcohol could either bring peace to an already chaotic situation or worsen it. So far, he was still waiting for the result as he downed another shot. “Aah!” He could not help but silently sigh at his increasing frustration as the pressure of his father’

  • She's Trouble: His Bride with a Dollar Sign   84 - An incompetent fool

“Do you think she’ll like this?” Isaac had worked his butt off to prepare this surprise for her, sparing nothing and refining everything up to the smallest detail. “I need it to be perfect.” He had never done anything like this in his entire life, but there was a first time for everything. Right? After all, he was doing this for the woman he loved and wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Isaac had arranged the most romantic dinner, ensured the flowers were fresh, with their scents mildly drifting in the air. Then, he lit the candles, which cast a soft, flickering glow over the table, creating the perfect setting. With all her favorites prepared, he believed he had everything covered. Starting with a small portion of smooth, creamy butternut squash soup, followed by a tender filet mignon served with garlic butter, grilled asparagus, and mashed potatoes. Paired it with a red wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Ending the evening with a chocolate fondant, a rich cake with a molten

  • She's Trouble: His Bride with a Dollar Sign   83 - In a different light

Home sweet home! The tall skyscraper was situated at the center of the most expensive and busiest district in the City. The penthouse suite at the very top of the building, which comprised the entire two floors, included a spacious living room, a state-of-the-art kitchen, one master bedroom, several guest rooms, a private gym, a game room, a viewing room, a maid’s quarters, and more. Not to mention its own private pool and a helipad on the rooftop. This incredible apartment was now where she lived, but truthfully, whenever she entered the foyer, she felt more like a guest or even an intruder than someone who belonged in this place. Despite all its great amenities, it never felt like home to her. Charlie’s only consolation. She had always had good company. “Good evening, Coco...” She knelt on the tiled floor and happily greeted the dog, who immediately wagged its tail as a friendly gesture while running to meet her. “Did you miss me?” Charlie had been gone almost the entire day, kee

  • She's Trouble: His Bride with a Dollar Sign   82 - More like a physical connection

Owen had just come from the store. Seeing her approach from the corner, he immediately invited her to his modest apartment. He opened the door, ushered her to the kitchen, and dropped the grocery bags on the counter. Owen was unaware that she would be visiting today. But that was Charlie, just like Mary Poppins, lurking in the shadows, making delightful wonders and popping in just when she was needed the most. “What are you doing here, Charlie?” Owen asked when she had suddenly appeared outside his apartment dressed in a crop top, denim pants, a leather jacket, and a pair of sneakers. From the day Charlie walked into the orphanage, carrying a worn-out teddy bear and a smile that was missing a couple of front teeth, Owen knew she would be different. Well, he was not wrong about that. Years later, they formed an unbreakable bond that was stronger than blood relations. Charlie had been a ray of sunshine in a world that had been cold and dark. She was not just beautiful, but she also b

  • She's Trouble: His Bride with a Dollar Sign   81 - Questions and doubts

“Isaac, over here.” Somebody called to him as soon as he entered the spacious room. He quickly spotted his friend, who was also joining him at the meeting. “Hey, man.” He addressed his friend with their private handshake. His friend was representing him today as his lawyer. “Ivan, you look like you have been working on your tan.” He could not help but notice the bronze complexion in his friend’s skin. It had been a week since Isaac last saw him, as Ivan had been away, dealing with a lawsuit. But it seemed he was not only working on his case, but clearly had found himself busy with something else. Isaac felt a twinge of envy, suddenly longing for the carefree life that he once enjoyed in his youth. Remembering the adrenaline pumping through his veins as he dropped everything and just hopped in his car, driving to wherever fate would lead him. However, responsibilities forced him to grow up sooner than he should, altering his priorities and ultimately his future. Now, Isaac inherited
