Chapter 8

Author: Mohini
Bryce's POV

After swimming to shore, I ended up on a small island.

An elderly woman named Jane Guthry took me in, saying I reminded her of her grandson, who had just passed away.

Her words made me think of Grandpa, and the pain in my chest became unbearable. I finally broke down and sobbed my heart out.

I had never imagined Lauren could be so heartless. She had actually snatched away Grandpa's life-saving medicine just to help her childhood friend, who was faking heart palpitations.

Bryce's POVThe moment I opened my eyes, I realized I was in the hospital where Lauren worked. Both Lauren and Mary were waiting in my hospital room for me to wake up."Bryce!"Lauren rushed over as soon as she saw me open my eyes, but Mary stepped in front of me and shoved her aside. She leaned toward me with a smile and asked, "How are you feeling? Do you feel any discomfort?"I shook my head. "Much better. I just got seasick."Annoyed at being ignored, Lauren stepped between us. "Who are you? Bryce is my husband. You—""I'm not your husband anymore," I cut her off coldly. "Stop calling me that."Lauren turned back to me and said softly, "How can you say that? Bryce, you are my husband."Before she could say more, Mary impatiently pulled her away. "He doesn't love you anymore. Stop clinging to him!"Lauren grabbed Mary by the arm in anger and shoved her to the floor. "Whether my husband loves me or not is none of your business!"I climbed out of bed to check whether Mary w

Bryce's POVThe moment I finished speaking, Lauren nearly lost it."No! How can you walk away from me like this? Bryce, this isn't fair! I can make amends for what happened to Frank. You can punish me however you want, but you absolutely cannot divorce me!"Punish her? Make amends?Nothing she did could bring Grandpa back. What was the point of making amends now?I let out a mocking laugh. "Why can't I divorce you? Listen, just looking at you now makes me sick. Do you honestly think I can stay with you like nothing happened? I don't care what goes on between you and Desmond anymore. All I want is for you to leave me alone."Lauren threw her arms around me, trembling as she sobbed and pleaded, "Please, don't say that. I only just found out that Desmond had been lying to me. He plotted to break us up and caused Frank's death. I've already canceled his card and left him to fend for himself. Isn't that enough?"Back then, Lauren had given Desmond a credit card without a second thoug

I finally broke down and sobbed my heart out.I had never imagined Lauren could be so heartless. She had actually snatched away Grandpa's life-saving medicine just to help her childhood friend, who was faking heart palpitations.Grandpa used to tell me that marrying Lauren was the best thing that had ever happened to me. But if that meant losing him, I would rather have never entered this sham of a marriage. The day we were stranded on the boat, I had considered jumping into the sea and leaving Lauren forever. Yet I couldn't bring myself to abandon Grandpa's body and let him sink to the ocean floor.I just hadn't anticipated that Desmond's sheer malice would rob me of my last chance to bring Grandpa home.Life on the island

Third-Person POVDesmond stood there in disbelief, his face flushed with anger."How could you yell at me? After Bryce went missing and Frank died, you've stopped being nice to me. Why do they matter so much to you? Lauren, don't forget that we grew up together!"Exhausted and furious, Lauren glared at him, realizing for the first time how much she despised him. His shameless attempts to play the victim and his advances made her sick. She lashed out, "Frank is dead, and Bryce is missing at sea! They're the two most important people in my life! Who do you think you are?"Desmond's mouth fell open in shock. He couldn't believe what he had just heard. He had always believed that Lauren considered him the most important person in her life. She had always gone out of her way to take care of him, since they were children and even after she got married. She had never once raised her voice at him and had always given him whatever he wanted."You're lying! You've always treated me so wel

Third-Person POVLauren had often told patients' families the same thing at the hospital, and over time, the words had become routine. But hearing them from the rescue workers now brought fresh tears to her eyes."What do you mean, you did everything you could? You haven't even found him yet! How can you give up now?"She shoved past them and plunged into the ocean, screaming at the top of her lungs, "Bryce! Where are you? Stop playing hide-and-seek with me! This isn't funny! Come out already!"Lauren dove underwater again and again, desperately hoping to find Bryce in the freezing water. But the vast ocean remained eerily silent. The people aboard the boat tried to reason with her."Dr. Raleigh, you need to face reality. You have to take care of yourself. You should also prepare for the possibility that your husband may have sunk to the bottom of the ocean…"Lauren slapped the water furiously as she cut them off, "No! Bryce can swim! There's no way he drowned! No… That's imposs

Send more people to look for him!"She stood on the deck, staring out at the vast ocean, but Bryce was nowhere to be seen. Nearly out of her mind with worry, she tried to throw herself back into the water to search for him.The rescue workers quickly stopped her and tried to calm her down. "Dr. Raleigh, please stay calm. We can send more people to look for him."Lauren gasped for breath, forcing herself to calm down as she muttered, "He'll be fine… He has to be…"After watching another group of rescuers dive into the water, she finally turned her attention to Frank's body. Her eyes immediately filled with tears. The events of the previous day replayed in her mind.Bryce had pleaded with red-rimmed eyes for her to leave the medication for Frank.
