...

I hung up the phone, pain searing through me like wildfire. My mind felt thicker than the blood pooling around me, the only sound my pounding heartbeat.

The wound in my abdomen burned, the flesh blackened and corroded by acid, the stench of charred skin choking the air. Every breath tore the wound wider, sending fresh waves of torment through my body.

My trembling fingers clung weakly to the dress rack for support, while Vanessa White loomed over me, her eyes glinting with malice.

"What, calling for backup?" she sneered, her voice sharp with mockery.

The gathering crowd around us snickered, their faces dripping with judgment. Camera flashes blinded me, shutters clicking like vultures circling. Whispers cut through the air, each word a stab to my heart.

"Caught red-handed as the side chick, huh?"

"That fancy dress? Bet she earned it on her back."

Vanessa, teetering on high heels, kicked me to the floor. "You think you are hot shit? Besides your sugar daddy, who is gonna come for you?"

She seized my dress and ripped it, the blood-soaked fabric scattering like confetti. "Wearing my dress and stealing my man? Let's show everyone what a slut you are! I am Clarence's wife. You're just a toy he discarded. You think you can take my place?"

I snapped my head up, pain lancing through my chest.

Clarence Thompson and I had been together for seven years. He'd spoiled me, going out of his way to make me feel cherished. He'd drive thirty minutes after work to buy my favorite cupcakes. He'd planned ninety-nine wedding proposals to give me a fairy-tale moment.

But now, his so-called wife stabbed me and called me a homewrecker. All his love and effort were a lie.

The crowd's laughter rang in my ears, but I met Vanessa's gaze defiantly, my voice cold as ice. "I'm not some cheap fling. My name is Kimberly Lopez, of the Lopez Group."

The room erupted in mocking laughter, and even Vanessa cackled, "The Lopez Group? Since when does the world's richest family have trash like you?"

The acid gnawed at my flesh, hissing and smoking. The pain and stench made me wince.

Before I could respond, she snarled, "How dare you look at me like that?"

She aimed a vicious kick at my abdomen, right where the knife had struck. The blinding pain caused me to curl up on the floor, and cold sweat soaked my tattered dress.

Not done, she grabbed my hair and slammed my head against the floor. "Not happy? I'm his legal wife. Beating you to death would be too kind."

I gave a bitter smile, coughing up blood.

All these years, I'd been living in Clarence's web of lies. His so-called business trips were to get a marriage license with another woman. His wedding plans were never meant for me.

Our relationship was a dead end.

"I need a hospital," I rasped, prying her hand off. "If anything happens to me today, Clarence will be the first one to fall. To save himself, he'll throw you under the bus!"

Vanessa laughed, amused by the absurdity of my threat. "You think you're somebody? Think I'd be scared? Clarence would never hurt me over a toy like you!"

She raised the knife again, her eyes wild with rage, but I had no strength left to dodge.

Just then, tires screeched outside. My brother, Chris Lopez, had arrived.

I forced my eyes open, clutching my bleeding abdomen, and struggled to my feet. Staring Vanessa down, I enunciated, "I told you, my name is Kimberly Lopez. Ready to pay for this?"

Her panicked expression was almost worth the pain. Her attack and Clarence's betrayal would not be forgiven. I'd make them answer for it.

Clarence thought he could sweet-talk his way out, but he didn't count on Vanessa being a loose cannon who'd attack me.In the boardroom, Clarence looked like a ghost of himself. His eyes were sunken, and he was unshaven, looking like he hadn't slept in days.Vanessa's face was gaunt, her eyes red from crying. Their intentions were painfully obvious the moment they walked into my office. They wanted mercy, a way out.Vanessa kept her head down, knowing she'd screwed up. She had stabbed me, targeting me as the mistress, all while claiming she despised sidepieces. Little did she know that she was the sidepiece all along. This reality hit her hard. The shock in her eyes spoke of her reluctance to accept it."Mr. Thompson," our lawyer said, "Ms. Lopez's support for you has been substantial, as you know. For breaching the contract, you owe ten times our investment."Clarence's face twitched. "What? When did this happen? That contract's a sham! I don't accept it! I built my career on my

"I messed up," Clarence sobbed. "But I'll make it right. Let's get you to the hospital. We'll talk when you're better, alright?""No, we'll talk now," I insisted, my tone leaving no room for argument. His eyes darted, and after a long pause, he muttered, "Vanessa is just my cousin. As for the marriage certificate... She said she was dying and it was her last wish. We divorced a month later. I've been with you this whole time."His words tumbled out in a frantic mess, as if slowing down would cost his life."What the hell are you talking about?" Vanessa snapped. "You said your family runs this city. That's why I put up with being your sidepiece. You fed me the same lines you're spitting now. Turns out, you're just a fake!"Her voice turned shrill, like a street brawl. "I knew you were bad news from the start. Now that I've pissed off the Lopezes, I'm screwed, but you think you're getting out of this? No, you're going down with me!""Shut up!" Clarence growled, veins popping on his

Clarence shook like a leaf, his face drained of color."No, this isn't what it looks like. I never meant for this to happen. I've always loved Kimberly," he stammered. "For all the years I worked for you, please, give me another shot."All our years together, and he thought he was just a dog on a leash. I laughed, bitter and cold. When he chased me, he'd bring me soup no matter the weather. Later, when Vanessa came along, he poured everything into her. He gave her his all, even hurting me to please her.I thought that he loved her and that he was just fickle. If he didn't care for me, we could have parted peacefully. None of this would have happened. Now I saw it: he didn't love either of us.Every move he made was calculated. My family's money built him up; Vanessa fed his ego and his need to feel powerful. Clarence's voice crackled through the phone. "Know your place! You're just a pawn your family used to tie me down, a bonus for our deal. Don't think I'll grovel to please you."My teeth clenched, my eyes burning with fury. So, that was what I was to him. We had been together for seven years, and I was just a bargaining chip. He conveniently forgot who backed him when he was nothing and who helped him build his empire step by step.My muffled sobs caught in my throat as I thrashed, my fingers fumbling across the phone. Finally, the speakerphone clicked on."Claren..." I started, but Vanessa snatched the phone."Who told you to answer her call?" she screeched. "She stabbed me with scissors and now plays the victim to trick you. Come deal with her!"I laughed, bitter and raw. "What are you so scared of? You think Clarence is some saint? He's sweet now because you're useful. When you're not, you'll end up worse than me.""No way!" she shot back, pulling a certificate from her bag a
