Chapter 1

Author: Perfect Timing
Misusing a Federal Council vehicle?

Three years minimum.

Taking some random girl for a joyride behind my back? Bonus charges.

If the Varonettis had half a brain, they'd have Marco grovel, and maybe—maybe—the Council would let it slide for the sake of our engagement.

But then I looked at her.

Ms. Caro. Arrogant. Entitled. And completely unsalvageable.

She wouldn't budge from the back seat, and honestly, I wasn't in the mood to babysit. I turned away and started the engine. Lives came first. Marco could explain himself later.

I gripped the wheel and pulled out.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!"

She lunged forward, shrieking, clawing at the steering wheel. "You don't get to drive without MY permission!"

The car jerked. We swerved hard, headed straight for a wall.

I yanked the wheel and slammed the brakes.

We plowed into a flowerbed. Engine dead.

"Are you insane?!" I yelled, heart pounding.

"Don't touch what's not yours," she sneered. "Do it again and I'll cut your hand off, loser."

Classy.

I ignored her and stepped out to check the damage. Hood was dented, but the engine still ran. Small win.

I was about to slide back in when a pack of Varonetti bodyguards closed in and shoved me aside.

With her watching like she was a queen, they took the front seats.

"Think you can disrespect Ms. Caro and walk away?" one of them snapped. "You're lucky we don't skin you alive."

Wait, these guys were taking orders from her?

I turned to the maid, who was just standing there.

"Who even is she?"

She scoffed. "You don't know Ms. Caro? She's Mr. Varonetti's favorite intern assistant. Sophia Caro."

I laughed.

An intern. Acting like she ran the show.

The Varonetti family? Total circus.

I pulled out my phone. "Let's see what Marco has to say."

Sophia tensed, eyes glued to me.

Since she was his favorite toy, I wanted to watch her squirm.

It rang forever before he picked up.

"Marco, using my car without permission's a public safety offense," I said flat. "Tell your intern and her goons to get out. If they don't screw with my mission, maybe I'll keep you out of jail."

Silence.

Then he laughed. Cold.

"Elena Ezzelini. Who do you think you are, asking me to shame poor Sophia for you? You really think you deserve that car more than SHE does?"

I went still.

The Varonettis had begged me to marry Marco—said it was to repay my life-saving work. Promised he had looks, status, and would take care of me.

I liked his photo. Said yes without blinking.

Never thought he'd side with her.

Did he seriously forget that without our engagement, his entire family would crash and burn?

I was the reason the Federal Council trusted them with those big-league contracts.

The girl they dragged through the mud turned out to be a top-tier surgeon, backed by the Federal Council. If they'd shown me even basic respect, they could've been basking in my spotlight. But nope—they bet on Sophia. Now they're choking on the fallout."Almost forgot about you," Alexander said, snapping open a report. "You used Elena's government car like it was your personal limo—fifteen shopping trips, twenty-two joyrides, and who knows what else."Every ride needed roadblocks and escorts. That's a public safety nightmare and straight-up misuse of Council property."Stack the charges, and you're gone for at least twenty

Over a dozen armored trucks crashed through the Varonetti gates like a full-blown raid.Leading them? Alexander Falken, Director of the freaking Federal Security Bureau.Even he—someone who's seen war zones—went red-eyed when he saw me."Who did this?" he growled, fury barely contained. "You dared lay a hand on the best heart surgeon in the country?"The same Varonettis who just called me a fraud? Now staring at me like they'd seen a ghost. All except Sophia—still clinging to her delusions."Who the hell ARE you people?!" she shrieked. "This is Varonetti property! You can't just barge in! I swear, I have—"Click.Something cold pressed to her temple.Alexander had loaded a round right in front of her face.Sophia shut up real fast. Then totally collapsed.Officers tried three times to get her to stand. Nothing. Legs completely gave out."Pathetic," Alexander muttered. "All that mouth, no spine."They moved me into the medical van.The hospital had blood ready, and as th

"Take me to the hospital..." I gritted out. "This is your last shot at redemption..."The second the Chief Councilor saw my message, I knew backup was coming. If I died, heads would roll."Still pretending?" Sophia laughed. "You seriously think someone's coming to save you? Newsflash—only the Varonettis run this place!""Who's making all that noise?"The voice sliced through the room.Sophia, mid-gloat, froze like someone hit pause. She went all quiet and docile. Then the woman walked in—and it clicked.Marco's mom. Claudia. No wonder Sophia straightened up like she just saw God.Claudia spotted me, immediately wrinkled her nose, and whipped out a handkerchief like I was some rotting garbage. The rest of the Varonettis stared, whispering behind their hands—disgust written all over them."Donato's dead. Why aren't you prepping the funeral?" Claudia snapped at Marco. "And who the hell brought in that foreign fraud?!"Sophia started shaking. She shot her hand up and pointed

Donato wasn't just the family elder—he was the Varonetti name.Without him? That empire was toast. Before he died, Donato did everything to lock me in as Marco's wife. Thought I'd give their crumbling image a little shine.Too bad Marco and Sophia wrecked all that."Don't talk nonsense!" Marco snapped, teeth clenched. "Didn't we hire a specialist? How could he die right as surgery started? Start resuscitation—I'll drag Elena back myself!""You've been conned!" the voice snapped. "That guy isn't a specialist—he sliced right through your grandpa's aorta the second he opened him up. No chance to save him."I checked—his credentials are fake. No license. Total fraud. Where the hell did you even find him?"Marco froze like the life had been yanked out of him. Then hit the floor, hard.Sophia, clearly annoyed Marco was still hung up on me, shot me a death glare before strutting over, hips swinging. She clung to him like she was marking territory."My nails are all chipped~" she wh

"What the hell did you send? Delete it now!" Sophia's shrill voice stabbed through the ringing in my ears.I couldn't stay upright. Blood loss hit me like a wave. Everything went dark as I collapsed.I had no idea how much time passed. When I finally cracked my eyes open, pain hit instantly. I tried to breathe—coughed up blood. Then a voice cut through the fog."Where's Elena?"The blur in front of me sharpened.Marco.His brows furrowed, jaw tight, like he came looking for a fight."You're asking about HER first?" Sophia whined, latching onto his arm. "If you care that much, go live with her! I'll leave and never look back.""Don't be ridiculous," Marco said, voice soft, all sugar and indulgence.Sophia lit up, dragging him toward me like she'd just won.But the second he saw my face—he froze. Eyes wide. Breath caught. Chest rising fast.Still, he didn't say a word. Didn't stop her. Didn't defend me."She was awful to me today!" Sophia whined, fake tears and all. "Scared

"Marco!" Sophia squealed, running toward the car.I barely lifted my eyelids. I needed answers. But it wasn't Marco. It was Adrian—his secretary.Sophia's smile dropped. She pouted. "Ugh, YOU? I'm in a mood today. Didn't even get my nails done. He sends you to brush me off? No way. I want HIM here.""Mr. Varonetti's with his grandfather for the surgery," Adrian said. She crossed her arms. "So? I hired some foreign expert—it'll be fine! And he still won't come comfort me?"Adrian frowned. Then his eyes met mine—and he froze. He rushed over, dropping to his knees beside me, eyes locked on the blood and torn skin."Mr. Varonetti said to take her to the hospital right away."He reached for the ropes.Barely hanging on, all I felt was bitter irony. He must've realized the surgery went south—and now he wanted me back. That operation was high-risk. No one but me could've pulled it off."Her?"Sophia stared at me like she'd seen a ghost, jealousy warping her face."So THAT'S why
