LUCA

The darkness wasn't clean. It came and went in minutes, blindong flashes of memory jerking my mind awake.

I heard footsteps, a door creaking, voices in the dark, then something cold was pressed against my cheek.

Then nothing. Back to the darkness.

The next time I opened my eyes, my head was in fire. The back of my skull throbbed so hard I thought for a moment that I would throw up.

My hands were chained behind the chair, the metal biting into my skin. My legs were tied too, my ankles rubbed raw.

The door opened and light stabbed into the darkness, but I could only see the feet. My breathing stalled as I remembered where I was.

I blinked against the sharp ache in my forehead, and forced the memories slowly into place as footsteps brought that foot closer to me.

The butler. I remembered the butler, stepping into the house and then the crack on the back of my skull.

I tensed, shifting slightly in the chair despite the ropes cutting deeper with every movement. My eyes adjuste

ALINAAs expected, Luca’s father was seated in the living room. His shirt was open to show a dusting of gray hair on his chest, and my mother was beside him, her bags packed. Luca stepped in beside me, stopping to glare at his Father. “Matteo…” Mother's frown was hotter than the sun. She sprang up from her seat, unhappily glaring at me. “Did you have to bring him here?” “He's not a dog, Mother, he has a name. He's my husband, of course he should be here.” I said tiredly. I wasn't going to have an argument with my Mother in front of the kids, so I walked away before she could reply, taking Maya and Leo with me. I had no doubt that Luca would have a few choice words for his Father, but that was no concern to me, so long as the kids didn't witness it. “Megan? Please help me set up the children's rooms. We'll take the room closest to Adriano’s room.” She nodded, and walked away. I took Maya and Leo with me, walking up to my former room. I would stay here for the few days we would b

  • Signed To The Mafia King   Chapter 142

LUCAThe moment Alina stepped forward, the dog wriggling in her arms, I knew I wasn’t ready for this. The dog was barking, shaking and struggling to jump from Alina’s arms and into mine as though it already knew I was its owner. And for a moment, I saw my old dog, Bruno. I saw the way he used to jump into my arms immediately I got home, the way no else could hold him if I was in the room. I saw father holding his limp body away from me while he screamed “it's just a dog” in my face. I blinked, pushing the memory back into the past where it belonged. My throat locked and my palm itched. “Why?” I asked flatly, though my eyes wouldn't leave the dog. Alina eyes didn't leave my face. I saw tears fill her eyes. “I thought... maybe you could let yourself have something good again. Even if it’s small. Even if it’s this."I shook my head, but she only stepped closer, and the dog only struggled harder to get out of her arms. I didn't want a dog, but it seemed it didn't matter what I wanted

ALINAI called Sofia at each adoption kernel we went to. I could have gotten an agent to do this, but I wanted to do it myself because yes, it was a fifty fifty chance but I wanted to do something that Luca might like. The dog we settled on was a small one, barely the size of an adult cat. Immediately Sofia saw it, she pointed. “That's the one.” I looked at it, unsure. The dog had its front paws on the cage chain, yipping and yapping. “Are you sure? It's rather loud.” Sofia giggled. “Exactly. That sounds used to rile me off, until father got rid of the dog and we all missed it. He'll love it.”So I paid for the dog, sitting with it in my lap, my hands running through its fur as I hoped and prayed that Luca didn't hate me for his. Maybe I couldn’t give him peace, but I at least, I could give him this.Losing his dog at such a tender age must have bruised his mind, showed him just how violent and gory his world was. I wasn't surprised that he didn't want children, but maybe this coul

  • Signed To The Mafia King   Chapter 140

ALINAWell, there went the happy evening we were supposed to have. Feeling flustered, I walked back into the house.Luca stopped me with his arm on my shoulder. “I need you to go into your room and make sure nothing's missing or left there.” I swallowed. “You mean he might have gone there to leave something?” He nodded. “I mean exactly that. Check in with me when you're done searching. I'll be in my study.” I nodded and hurried to my room. I searched the room but there was nothing to be found. I didn't believe Darion had been inside my room long enough to leave anything behind but always better safe than sorry. When I didn't find anything different, I sat on the bed, trying to calm the flutters in my chest. I was fine, it was fine, Darion was gone and nothing was missing. I left the room and headed to Luca’s study. He was alone inside, seated behind his desk. When he met my eyes, he sat up in the chair and beckoned me into the room. When I got to him, I perched on the edge of his

ALINAThe man on the floor stopped struggling suddenly. He heaved a long sigh and went limp on the floor. I kept my knee on his back still, worried he was only pretending to give in. His name was Darion. It meant nothing to me but Luca obviously knew who this was. I stood, and Pietro helped me drag the man off the floor. His eyes were closed as Luca’s hand closed around his neck. “Again, Darion, what the fuck are you doing inside my house? In my bedroom no less?” Darion eyes opened and he lifted his arms in surrender. “Look, I can explain.” “Can you? How about you do that in my study?” Luca gripped the front of his shirt tighter and lifted him right off his feet with a violence that was terrifying. “Where's Marissa?” I asked Luca as I followed him down the hallway. After Luca left to meet Marissa, I'd left the kitchen, wrung out and happy at the same time.Happy because Luca had finally said the three words to me. And wrung out because there was just so much going on. Imagine my

LUCA Alina pulled out of my arms. Her breathing was still shallow, and she was shaking. So I allowed her go. For a second, we just stood there staring at each other. There were no real words to make the moment less tense. So instead of force her to speak, I asked away and lifted Maya into my arms. I saw Alina’s shoulders relax. Maya giggled, her hands grabbing at my collar and I held her tighter than I should have, pressing my face into her soft curls. I kissed the top of her head and set her down, bending to pull Leo into my arms too. He laughed, and I closed my eyes and allowed myself to rest in the moment. Maybe Alina was already pregnant with my child. What would that mean for us? “Luca?” Alina called. “Yes, Sunshine?” I asked, turning to her. She took Leo from me, settling him into his chair, then she nodded to the stairs. “Go take a shower. You stink.” Maya and Leo giggled, both of them repeating the word stink. I rolled my eyes at Alina but I went up the stai
