ALINA

The door fell completely off the hinges. I stepped back as it slammed into the ground, the sound of the crash causing my ears to ring.

A second later, Luca steppedthrough the ruins of the door. His eyes met mine, and I flinched.

His shirt was tied around his hand, his hair dripping, and his eyes were dark steel, tight at the corner with anger that had its own gravity.

His fingers were bloody, and his chest was sweaty, but he looked as sexy as a god. His arms flexed as he slowly untied the shirt and allowed it to fall on the floor.

He stood just inside the bathroom, the shadow brushing his jaws harshly as he looked at me. “You locked me in the bathroom.” His voice was calm in that way that terrified me more than shouting ever could.

I didn't know what his next move would be, what he would say or do, and it scared me to hell.

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. He glanced back at the wrecked door, then returned his eyes to mine, one brow lifting. “Did you really think a

ALINAI felt the ground tilting under me when the words left my mouth. Hide. That was all I wanted from him, just this once, to take the safest option instead of the proudest one.Luca’s eyes were dark and smoky, his jaw locked in that way that always told me I was about to lose the argument. “No, I'm not hiding.” The words were already carved in stone. I pushed forward, stepping into his body, standing so close that I could feel his breathe on my lips. “You have to, please, Luca, if they take you…” “They won’t keep me,” he snapped, the heat in his voice doubling against my fear. “They don’t have a body, no footage, nweapon, not a shred of evidence. Marissa’s wasting her time trying to pin this on me.”He tugged my fingers off his chest, and thought the action was gentler than his voice, it didn't stop the shake racing through me. “And when she's done making a fool of herself, I'll sue her. And the entire police department, and anyone who so much as breathes the wrong way.” “You

LUCAWe'd been going around in circles for the last hour. Bella was sobbing in the corner, Valentina sitting on the couch trying to soothe her. Pietro had called every contact he had, nothing. I'd done the same, and now, all we had was waiting. None of us had the patience for that.“Why didn't you kill him when you had the chance?” Pietro snapped at me. He stalked from end of the room to the other, muttering the question over and over again. Because I'd wanted to torture the bastard to within an inch or his life. But Pietro was right, I should have put a bullet in his skull and saved us this trouble. “I'll find them. Stop that fucking pacing, it's dizzying.” I snapped back, glaring at the back of his head. The house was swimming around my head as I dialed Marco again. He didn't answer again.“Shit, Vector could kill her,” Pietro said. He stopped, his chest heaving with one stagnant inhale after the last. “Vector was working with Alberto.” I pointed at the couch, glowering at him.

LUCA“Talciro has grown old, he doesn't know what the fuck he's saying.” Marco muttered, placing a bag of ice over his eyes. “I believe him, Marco. I don't think he got the shipment.”Talciro’s office was murky with the smell of cigarettes. He had stepped out to take a call. I leaned back in the chair, chancing a look at the lock to the secret room where the gold was stacked. He knew damned well I could get into the secret room, and he'd left us here in the room alone. He hadn't received the gold. Swinging my head back to Marco, I found him already watching me. “Did you speak directly to Talciro when you delivered the shipment?” “It was a phone call, but damn it, no one has that croaky voice he does. It was him.” Marco insisted. “I wouldn't make a mistake with a shipment this huge.” And I didn't believe he had, but the shipment had been picked up, and delivered, only probably to the wrong people.I stood and crossed the room to the door, then beckoned to Marco. “Let's go, I expect

ALINA “Now step away from him.” Vector waved the gun, a black look on his face that scared me more than the weapon he was swinging around. “Vector, what the hell are you doing?” I hissed at him, placing Pietro’s head gently on the floor and stepping away. “Why's my mother tied up behind you?” He pushed mother and she fell on the floor, then immediately crawled away. Vector watched her until she was safely across the room, guilt flickering across his face. My heart slammed into my throat, fire burning through me as he turned that gun on me. God, I hoped he didn't plan on shooting everyone, Maya and Leo were here too. “I said it already, Alina. You don't get to ask me questions. We'll go for a small drive together.” His lips tightened and he flicked the gun at the door. “Move.” He stepped forward, and instinctively, I stepped away from him. Without a word, Vector raised the gun, pulled the trigger, the report of a gun raising the hairs on the back of my neck. My head whipped

ALINAThe house felt huge and cavernous without Luca’s presence. I sat in the garden and read a book, glad for one free morning when things seemed pretty normal. Seemed, because my mother had meant her words. She had actually left with Matteo. Valentina came by to visit with Adriano who was already asking when he could return to school. The doctors had brought him a wheelchair from the hospital, and Bruno was currently barking as he ran circles around him.I sighed, closing the book, and accepting a glass of wine from Valentina. “That dog never shuts up.” Valentina’s dropped to the dog, then lifted back to me. She shrugged. “He looks so tiny, you have to wonder where all that energy is coming from.” Bruno ran over to Maya and Leo, and ran circles around them too. I noticed Adriano was still staring at me. I looked back at him, dropping the glass back on the garden table between us. “Adriano, you're barely healed. We'll talk about it when you're not still held together by bandages
