LUCA

I didn’t bother looking at my father. I was too tired to argue. Too tired for the tense silence pressing down on the room.

Instead, I turned to Alina, still standing in the doorway.

“Come and eat,” I said.

She didn’t move.

She stared at my father like she was seeing a ghost, her body stiff like she was preparing for another fight.

I sighed, pushed my chair back, and stood. I walked over, took her hand, and pulled her toward the table. Her fingers were cold in mine, and for once, she let me lead her without a word.

That was strange.

I almost wanted to laugh. She had fought me over everything so far. Argued, pushed, tested me at every turn. And now, when I expected resistance, she was quiet?

Maybe she was as tired as I was.

I pulled out a chair for her. She sat, lowering her eyes to the table.

My father was still watching us, his expression tight with anger. I ignored him and turned to Sofia instead. “Eat,” I said, nodding at the food on her plate.

She nodded, then picked up her fo

ALINAI walked over to my seat and sat down. Victoria didn’t look at me. Not once. She laughed and flirted with the men around her, brushing her fingers over their sleeves, tipping her head back when someone said something mildly funny. She leaned in close to Riot, whispered something in his ear that made him smirk, and I was sitting right beside her, like I didn’t exist.Perfect.I could work with that. I would ignore her too. It was her decision whether she apologized or not. Her apology didn't matter because I had no intention of forgiving her. I kept my face neutral, but inside I was still burning. My skin ached slightly from the kiss Luca had given me, and my mouth…God.He kissed me like I was the last meal on earth. First soft and sweet, then suddenly feral and hungry. My stomach flipped just remembering it. My thighs clenched. I shifted in my seat, crossing my legs quickly and praying no one noticed how flushed I looked. I knew what that kiss meant. We’d be having sex la

LUCAI stood outside the bathroom, fists still clenched at my sides. Analide stood beside me like a well-meaning shadow. “You really should come with me,” she said, slipping her hand around my arm. “My father’s expecting you. It’s just a quick meeting. A toast and a handshake.”A muscle twitched in my jaw. Was she asking me to meet her father right now? Couldn't she read the room? Alina was in that bathroom, probably crying with wine all over her dress. The one she glowed in, when she first tried it on, and showed it to me when I came to pick her up. And Analide thought I cared about some meeting with her father?I pulled my arm free. “Not now.”She frowned. “But he’s waiting.”“I said not now!” I snapped, stepping away. But she followed, hurrying too fast behind me.I stopped right in front of the bathroom door, just as it opened. And of course Victoria stepped out because what better way to worsen my mood than having to deal with her? She was smiling as she came out, but immedia

ALINAGasps sounded around us like firecrackers. The scent of wine, sweet and sharp, filled the air as a hush fell over our corner of the ballroom.“Oh no!” Victoria’s voice trembled with false horror. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you there.” She apologized but her eyes were glittering with satisfaction.I stared down at my dress—Analide’s masterpiece—now soaked in dark red. I blinked once. Twice. My heartbeat thundered in my ears.Analide spun toward Victoria, her face frozen. “What the hell is wrong with you?”“I said I was sorry,” Victoria replied, her tone dripping sugar. “It’s not my fault she wasn’t watching where she was going.”I clenched my fists at my sides. My nails dug into my palms. Don’t slap her. Don't slap her. I begged myself, closing my eyes so I could control my temper. I wasn't even mad about her pouring an entire glass of wine on my dress, I was mad because the dress was Analide’s and I knew she had spent hours on it.Analide turned to me, eyes blazing. “Alina

ALINAWhat the hell was Victoria doing with Riot Alvarado? The thought spun around in my head like a tornado as Riot’s grin sharpened into something predatory.“You’ve got some bloody guts showing your face here after what you did to me,” he hissed, leaning in so close I could smell the whiskey on his breath. His arm where I had cut off the wrist was tied neatly with a black velvet material threaded with gold. My spine stiffened, fury crashing through the fear. “I didn’t do anything to you. You did that to yourself. You hurt a woman. You deserve whatever you got.” Luca stood before I could say more, his body forming a solid wall between Riot and me. His voice was deadly calm. “Sit down, Riot. Don’t try to cause a scene or you won’t like my reaction.”Victoria stepped in quickly, her hand reaching for Riot’s arm like she could control him. “He’s not trying to cause a scene, Luca. He’s just surprised to see her. We both are.”She smiled like this was some sweet accident. I wanted to

LUCAI’d seen Alina angry, seen her happy. I'd also seen her twisted in pleasure under me.But I had never seen her like this. She was pale, quiet and shaking.I gripped the steering wheel with one hand, holding her fingers with my other hand. She wouldn’t let go, not even to fix her hair when the wind blew it into her face.“I’ll call Elena, tell her we won’t make it to the gala and she can cancel with the Talciros.” I said, eyes on the road as I drove home.“No.” Her voice was soft but sharp. “I’m not hiding. I’m going. I refuse to let myself be scared into hiding.” I glanced at her, anger thrumming under my skin. I wanted to find who had done this to her and skin them alive. And I would. But for now, I needed to make sure she was mentally fine. “Alina, I don't know if that's a good idea.” “I think it’s my uncles,” she muttered suddenly, looking out the window. “Maybe they haven't stopped. Maybe Enzo told Uncle Alberto something.”I shook my head. “It’s not them.”She looked at

ALINAMy hands trembled so violently that the box nearly fell from my fingers. The beeping filled my ears like a countdown to death. My breath hitched. I tried to suck in air, but my lungs wouldn’t cooperate. The room was shaking around me. The words on the note blurred before my eyes, but they were already burned into my memory.I staggered backward, knocking into my desk. My knees gave out and I sank to the floor, the cold tile biting through my dress. Was this real? Was this actually happening?“Alina!” Ethan’s voice sounded miles away. “We have to move now!”But I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even blink. My whole body felt frozen in place, locked in that moment with the ticking sound of death.I had just tried on the most beautiful dress of my life. And then, someone wanted to make sure I wouldn’t live long enough to wear it.“We need to get her out of here. Now. I think she’s in shock,” he told Mikhail, already moving toward me.Mikhail was already dialing someone. His face was p

ALINAIn a moment, I was standing beside Luca, holding the bouquet he had gotten for me, feeling the hurt on my wrist. The next moment, I was in the car, beside his secretary, heading to a place I didn't know.“Aren’t you with the dress? Why can't I just wear it?” I asked her for the third time. She smiled patiently. “I'm sorry, Mrs. Marino, but I am working under instructions from the Talciro family. The dress they have for you is at their boutique, and needs fitting.” I nodded. Elena probably didn't know anymore than I did about anything.I knew about the Talciro family. In fact, everyone in Chicago did. But choosing me specifically for a custom dress that needed me to come for a fitting was strange. No wonder Luca had gotten so angry when I refused his command to go with him to the gala.Immediately we reached the Talciro boutique, we were led up and soon, we stepped into the most extravagant boutique I had ever seen. Elena gasped dramatically, her eyes shining like diamonds. She

LUCA“Have the clothes taken to the house. No one touches them until my wife does, understand?” I smoothly commanded Elena. She nodded and left my office. I knew everything would be done exactly as I wanted. The clothes for the Talciro gala ball had arrived. The event was in two days and it would be the first time Alina and I would be attending an event together. I felt sorry that I had hurt her in the morning. I planned to apologize by getting her flowers and a new diamond necklace. I went personally to pick up the roses and had a selection of diamonds brought in so I could pick. Once I had both, I went back home. The last person I expected to see immediately I stepped in was my father. I groaned, pausing at the door, but he had already seen me.“Come in, Luca.” He said, waving me into the house as though it was his. I dropped the bouquet of flowers carefully on the table. I could feel my father watching me suspiciously.“Why are you carrying flowers around like a woman?” “Fa

ALINAThe next morning, I woke early and dressed fast. I went into the kitchen and made a sumptuous meal for my brother with the chef's help. I wanted to leave early so I could get back early. I also didn't want to run into Luca if I was very honest. The enormous platters of meals were packed into the car and we left. Lorenzo went with me. We picked up my cousin Enzo at his house and he came into my car with me. He smiled winsomely, looking very handsome like his father. “It's been a while. I didn't believe Valentina when she said I would be going to see Adriano with you.” He laughed. I shifted away from him. I wasn't very comfortable with him. I didn't trust Enzo. I was already fighting with his father, why was he smiling and looking so agreeable?Enzo looked too slick with his gelled black hair and wide, handsome smile. “I've been busy. Running my father's business takes time and effort.” I looked out of the window. I really didn't want a long conversation with him. He must
