LUCA

I parked outside and waited for Alina.

I was picking her up after her meeting. The door opened but it was Alberto who came outside.

He walked past me toward his car, his eyes burning with so much hatred, it was almost laughable. If looks could kill, I’d be dead a thousand times over and he wouldn't have been my killer either.

I didn’t react. Didn’t even spare him a second look as I pulled open the passenger door just as Alina stepped outside.

She pulled her coat tighter, her hair shifting against her shoulders as the wind picked up. She looked tired and majestic at the same time.

When I stepped into the car, the driver pulled out, my security detail in front and behind us.

After being shot at, I was more careful with security. I watched Alina's face. She looked calm, but I could tell she was worried. “How did the meeting go? Any problems?”

She shrugged. “The meeting went fine enough.” Then, after a second, she added, “Alberto threatened to kill you.”

I laughed quietly. Why

LUCAI was still in the office, trying to track the gold with Darion’s help, when Marco walked in like nothing was wrong. He looked like nothing had changed, as though I hadn’t just heard my wife tell me something that made me want to snap his neck in half.“Where’ve you been?” My voice was calm. Too calm. Calm enough to make a smarter man sweat.Marco didn’t. He knew me, he was in my circle. He didn't need to sweat. He closed the door and shrugged. “Checking on a lead for the gold.”I leaned back in my chair, studying his face. Every twitch, every blink, every breath. “Any progress?”“Nothing yet,” he said. His voice was steady, but I didn’t miss the way his hand gripped the back of the chair across from me a second too long before letting go.Nothing yet.Two words I’d heard before, but this time, they felt different. Like a lie with a fresh coat of paint.I nodded slowly, fingers tapping against the desk. “And Mila? You’ve been talking to her?”His eyes met mine, then looked away.

LUCAFor a second, I just stared at her.Marco?No. That didn’t make sense. Couldn’t make sense. Marco had been with me for almost twenty years. He’d taken bullets for me. He’d bled for me. When I was climbing my way up from the dirt, Marco was the only one who didn’t flinch away from me no matter what happened. “Alina,” I said slowly, my jaw tight. “Are you sure about this?”“I’m sure.”I wanted to tell her she was wrong, that she was letting her anger cloud her judgment, but there was something in her eyes that shut me up.A sharp burn lit under my ribs. My blood felt like it was boiling, then freezing, then boiling again. Marco? No. I wouldn't believe it until I saw the evidence with my own eyes. Which might be too late, but at least I would know. I stepped closer and cupped Alina’s face, because right then, I needed something to keep me grounded, and she was it. “Before you go,” I murmured, “tell me something. Did you doubt me when you saw Analide?”Her eyes dimmed and she lo

ALINAFor a second, all I could hear was the pounding in my ears.Analide was smirking like the cat that got the cream. Luca stood like a wall between us, his face calm but his eyes, God, his eyes, burned like coals. And then it hit me. It was that smirk. It was th way she looked so satisfied. She knew she could piss me off. She had studied me for months while she pretended to be my friend. Analide wanted me to soubt Luca. It really didn't matter to her if he had done anything to deserve that doubt or not. But Luca, my monster, he wouldn't cheat on me. Especially not in his office where anyone could walk in at any moment. Even if he wanted to, he wasn't that stupid. So I took a deep breathe, stepping into his arms. Analide’s smirk widened. What? Did she expect I would slap him? Because instead, I grabbed Luca’s jaw with both hands and crushed my lips to his. His body went rigid for half a second, but he groaned and snatched my body against his. Luca kissed like a starving ma

ALINAI knew I had to meet Mila. She couldn't do that. When I arrived at her apartment, I could see her sneak a look at me from the window above. And when she opened the door, it was only halfway. Stading T me, she didn't say hello, or ask me to step inside. “What do you want, Alina?” She asked flatly.“I told you on the phone,” I said. “I want to talk.”“You said enough already. Please leave.” She started to shut the door, but I planted my palm against it and pushed.“I’m not leaving.” I walked inside before she could argue. The living room was small, neat, and full of photographs of Mikhail. Him in a uniform. Him holding a baby. Him smiling at his wife on their wedding day. You would never know the violence he was involved in outside the house. Guilt bit into me, but I ignored it. “You told me you know about Victoria. How?”Mila crossed her arms. “Mikhail told me.”I shook my head, feeling cold, because the lie was so obvious it almost sounded like a joke. “No, he didn’t.”Her

ALINA“My question is simple, Alina,” my mother said. Her voice was sharp, and it made me hold the phone tighter. “Now that you’ve killed your uncles, what do you expect the family to do?”I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the carpet like it had the answer. “What do you mean, what do I expect you to do? The family doesn’t need to do anything.”“Don’t be ridiculous. You’ve thrown a torch into the middle of the room. People will choose sides.”Heat flushed my neck. “Adriano put a kill order on me, Mother. He wanted me dead in my own house. What would you have done? Sat there and prayed he changed his mind?”“You didn’t have to do what you did,” she shot back, her tone cold. “At the very least, you didn’t have to let Luca pull the trigger.”I almost laughed. It came out so dry I wanted to pull my own hair out. “You think Luca shot him?”“You’re telling me he didn’t?” I could hear the hope in her voice, and I wondered since when my mother had changed so much. I couldn't recognize

LUCAThe next morning started as calm as any morning the last few days. Alina was still asleep when I slid out of bed, her hair a dark spill over the pillows. She stretched, blinking her eyes open. “Where are you going?” Her eyes were hooded, and she was smiling softly. I leaned over and kissed her cheeks. I didn't deserve her, or even the sight of her. “I'm going for a walk with Bruno. I need to walk some of this energy off.” She nodded, sighed and closed her eyes, falling back to sleep a few seconds later. I smiled, shaking my head as I pulled on a shirt. Bruno was waiting by the door, his tail shaking. He barked when I stepped through the door, his leash already caught between his teeth. I knelt and rubbed my fungers through his fur. Today would be a long day. “Come on boy,” I muttered, grabbing the leash and stepping outside. The air was cold, just how I liked it at this hour of the day. Bruno walked ahead, his small tail wagging as he investigated every sound and leaf dan
