Chapter 1

The system said, "Because you were bound to Regina Horton's Sugar Baby System as a lapdog, you were forced to fawn over her no matter what she did.

"However, you persevered and broke the system's world record for Most Resilient Lapdog. Therefore, you received a random reward, allowing you to be unbound to her system," the mechanical voice continued, explaining everything clearly to me in my head.

"Can she rebind me again?" I asked. The question had been in my mind for a while.

"No, she can't. Once the lapdog turns things around, he will rise to power and be above everything else in the system. And if you keep becoming stronger, Dominic, the system will even randomly bestow various mysterious rewards to you from time to time."

After getting a clear picture of everything, I felt as though I'd been reborn. It was like the clouds had finally parted, the fog had cleared, and I could finally catch a glimpse of the blue sky hiding behind everything.

I looked at the guests whispering amongst themselves below the stage, then at Regina's, Larry Dickson's, and their relatives' smug faces. Finally, I met my parents' eyes, filled with worry, and I quietly took a deep breath.

I took the microphone from the host and stood in the center of the stage.

"It is very regrettable to be changing my engagement partner today, under such circumstances," I said, the entire hall falling silent at once.

Regina and Larry both wore smug, arrogant expressions. They always enjoyed stepping all over me to climb the social ladder, taking advantage of me to show off their abilities.

I continued, "A moment ago, Ms. Regina Horton said that she would be swapping me out as her engagement partner at our engagement ceremony. I respect, understand, and support her decision."

A gasp swept through the room. However, the guests weren't too surprised by my actions.

Then, I dropped the bombshell. "As of today, Regina and I are peacefully broken up. We will no longer have anything to do with each other."

Everyone froze in disbelief.

I raised my voice. "Moving forward, she and her family have nothing to do with me, Dominic Carlson, or my family. You may treat them however you want.

"As for the expenses today, consider it my breakup fee for Regina. Eat and drink to your heart's content! Don't bother holding back. Just enjoy yourself fully today."

Regina had used the excuse of "testing me" over the past two years to amass wealth in my name. She did so to benefit both her family and Larry's.

However, yesterday, when I proposed to her again for the 100th time, she finally agreed to get engaged with me, and everyone in Valdington knew about it.

Fortunately, we weren't married. If we had, I would suffer terribly and continue being humiliated by her for the rest of my life.

Just as I stepped off the last step, Mom and Dad came up to me, one on each side, and grabbed my hands, tears streaming down their faces.

"Dom, did you mean what you said on the stage?"

I nodded. "You're both right. I should choose someone of equal social standing when picking a wife. Someone like Regina is definitely not worthy of our family name."

Mom and Dad exchanged glances, their hands trembling as they held mine. Yet, they still spoke in unison and said, "Okay, Dom. We believe you."

They would always believe me, only to be disappointed each time. But they would still always believe me again and again as long as I said it.

In fact, they would even let me squander away all of our family fortune if I wanted to. If I hadn't feigned a falling-out with them when I was still thinking straight, forcing them to take back my shares in the company, our family would have fallen to ruin by now, and the richest family in Valdington would either be the Hortons or the Dicksons instead.

I sighed softly and gripped their hands back tightly. This time, I was determined to show them that I wasn't going back on my word and disappointing them again.

While chatting among ourselves, Regina, who had been left onstage, belatedly realized what had just happened and began to attack me.

"Dominic Carlson! I dare you to repeat what you just said to me!"

She glared at me, confident that I wouldn't have the guts to repeat myself.

I smiled lightly and looked at her barely passable pretty face. "We're done, Regina Horton," I said calmly. "You're free to marry whoever you want, and so am I. This engagement party will be the last thing I ever do for you."

Regina chimed in again. "Just admit it, Dominic. Even now, you still haven't forgotten about me. You've been waiting for me all this while."When I didn't answer, she launched into a tirade.Cheryl started gathering her things, intending to leave. However, I reached out and grabbed her."I have never wanted a match in social standing. I just wanted someone who understood my needs—someone who could be there for me, understand me, and support me."I'm sure of my choice, Cheryl Greene. You're the one I want. You're the one I'm choosing to be with."I then pulled out a large diamond ring I had prepared beforehand and got down on one knee."I was worried that it would be too sudden for you, that you weren't ready to accept that I wanted to marry you and build a life with you. But I think that this is the perfect timing for it."Over the past three months we were together, you kept me company, gave me endless support and advice, and helped me save those little, dying companies, time a

I looked at Regina's pale face and chuckled."You still think that I'm your lapdog? Sorry to break it to you, but the tables have turned," I said.Regina was shocked. She trembled as she asked, "What do you mean?"Then, she seemed to have run into an issue as she frantically waved her hands about in the air."No! I don't want Larry to be my male lead!"Why can't I change it? I want to change it!"You fucking idiot, change it back to Dominic! He's nothing but a lapdog! What right does he have to change my fate?"Her cursing kept getting more and more out of control, and I figured that she must be talking to her system.I took Cheryl's hand and turned to leave. Behind me, Larry suddenly lunged at Regina and began slapping and kicking her."You bitch! You promised me that you'd be able to get the money today! You said Dominic would make me the CEO of the company! So, where's my money? And where's my CEO position? Give them to me!"…The next time I met Regina again was on a nig

That evening, I had just finished a business meeting and was planning to slip out of the lavish banquet hall when Regina stepped right into my path."I'm pregnant with your child, Dominic Carlson. You have to take responsibility for both me and my baby."I took a few steps back in surprise and nearly lost my balance. However, I quickly regained my composure."Liar. I never even touched you in bed."Regina smiled bitterly and said, "You were completely drunk at the end of a cocktail party two months ago and forced yourself on me. You even stabbed the condom right before my eyes and told me that you were going to force me to be yours for the rest of my life…"How could you forget all about it in such a short amount of time, Dominic? You heartless jerk! I'm going to get an abortion! I'll never give you any kids!"Regina didn't so much as flinch delivering such an elaborate lie. If I hadn't known what kind of person she truly was, I'd have already fallen for her act.The guests in t

Less than 48 hours later, Regina appeared before me once again. She viciously threw the latest Chanel bag at me, but I dodged it easily with a mocking smile on my face. Was that it?I thought that she would be able to hold out for at least three days. Or, maybe she realized that she was nothing without me.She gritted her teeth at me in the lobby, seemingly offended by my mocking smile. "Do you know what the heck you're doing, Domonic Carlson?"I gave her a once-over. Her skin was bumpy, her figure was nothing to shout about, her buck teeth jutted in an overbite, and she couldn't even hide the pimples and blackheads on her face, even though she was caked in thick makeup. Her small, almond-shaped eyes were full of calculation, and it just took me one look to conclude that I didn't like her at all.Looking at her now, there was absolutely nothing about her that fit my ideal tastes and preferences in women. I wouldn't even give her a second glance if she crossed me on the street.

I scoffed and hung up right away. Then, I blocked Regina's number and deleted it from my phone.Seconds later, another call came in, this time from an unfamiliar number. However, it was still Regina's voice on the other end of the line."Dominic Carlson! Why did you hang up on me like that? Don't you know that Randy is the only family I have left in this world?"You told me you loved me. If that's the case, why won't you do this one thing for me? Do you mean to tell me that you never meant it all those times you told me you loved me? They were just empty words?"How could you refuse to help the woman you loved? It can't be that you're just unable to do it. You're so useless!"I let out a bitter laugh."Regina, love may not wither from a lack of response, but it certainly does with repeated disappointment. Ask yourself honestly—I've done everything for you ever since I fell for you, but have you ever done a single thing for me in return?"Sorry, but I don't like you anymore. We'r

"What's the point of saying such disheartening and shameful things in public, Dominic? You're just going to end up on your knees begging Regina for forgiveness if you upset her. So, why even bother?" Randy Horton, Regina's younger brother, asked with a sneer."How about this? Convince your parents to sign over half their company's shares to me, and I'll consider putting in a good word or two for you."I looked at the beer-bellied, bald, and pasty-faced man before me. He used to be someone I wouldn't even spare a second glance at, let alone serve me, and yet, he acted as though speaking to me was him bestowing a huge favor upon me.The reason had simply been because I kept spoiling and indulging Regina unconditionally in the past, and I'd extended that care to him as well, taking care of her good-for-nothing piece of trash she had for a brother. However, they seem to have forgotten that I was the one who gave them everything they had.I took a few steps back so that I wouldn't die
