Adeline

Walking back to my car, I awkwardly wedge my phone between my cheek and my shoulders, digging through my bag for my keys.

“So it went alright? You like the position?” Wesley, my boyfriend asked.

Position. What position?

“Uh..yeah.” I reply, adjusting the strap of my bag across my chest and unlocking the car door.

“Thank God babe. I was worried sick about you. I know you don't do well with certain people.”

Opening the door, I slide into the seat and wince at the slight pain I felt. I need a soak at the new place Wesley got.

“Text me the new address, Wes. I'll be coming home soon.”

“Okay I get it. You must be tired. I'll run you a bath.” He said. “But there's a bit of an issue.”

I check the screen, seeing Markie’s text come through.

Was the dick good?

Leave it to Markie to be on dick patrol. It's as if she timed it.

“But till you come back. Shuffling with online classes and your current job sounds insane but I know you can handle it.”

“Yeah whatever. I'll be home soon.” I waved him off and hung up the phone. The guilt pressed through my chest. I shouldn't have lied to Wesley about my job. I feel awful at my decision but I had no choice.

We needed money and a place to stay. It's really nice Wesley happened to secure a place for us to stay for a while. I sighed. Croix didn't say anything else. I wonder if I got in. Or not.

My father, Phil is the guy I refused to call Dad. He left my sick mother because, and I quote, ‘it just wasn't working out for me anymore’. Asshole.

Now that Mom is dead and I have no one to turn to, Phil has been trying to occupy that void like it never happened. His push for me to move here to get a job was good but I wasn't going to succumb easily.

I pull up to the address, my car engine sputtering sick sound coughs through the rusty exhaust, barely making it to my destination as I park.

Rechecking my phone to make sure it's the right address, I eye the single story home that line the block.

A large black dog with pointy ears and a studded collar stands on the dry grass, the hair on his haunches raised, barking in my direction. This can't be the place.

My phone vibrates in my lap.

Markie: Better than Wesley? How's that gonna work? When are you gonna tell him? I thought you gave that up.

The guilt I feel is unmatched yet this is nothing more than work for me. There is a definitive separation between my relationship and side gig.

Besides, Wesley likes me. Croix is just someone I'm working for to get some spare change. And for my job I stopped, the reason I did that will remain with me till eternity.

Adeline: Cross that bridge when I get to it, or on my deathbed. Whichever comes first.

I don't plan on telling Wesley anything yet.

Markie: Well, I only want dick details after you meet with the sexy step bro. So many dicks, very little time.

If I know anything, Phil's wife, Kathy has a dweeb for a son. Apparently our parents met at a Christian seminar and drove out of town to not feel guilty about it then a shotgun wedding happened.

Weird but all I know is that here I am, at the suburbs ready to make a home out of this stranger's house.

I scroll up my phone to find my sperm donor's number to confirm if I'm in the right place when his car pulled up in the driveway.

He parks his new shiny SUV and jogs across the street to mine in his brown slacks. “I know what you're thinking.” He says. “It's only a few blocks from the company and you'll be in good company here.”

I couldn't hide my distaste for the situation. But it's better than my previous state when I was with mom who was living in a drug induced state.

“Besides you wouldn't want to stay with just Kathy and me. We're old and boring.”

That's his nice way of saying ‘I don't want my filthy daughter to stain my beautiful bride with her dirtiness.’

It was his way of pawning me off to someone to take care of me while keeping his reputation.

“Hi to you too, Phil.” I forced a smile then shoved him aside to walk towards the door.

“Sorry. Hi.” He forced a smile too. “And you can call me Dad, you know.”

My face contours into a look of revulsion and his smile deteriorates.

“But seriously you can play your cello without disrupting anyone and this is a perfect opportunity to connect with your stepbrother.”

I nearly shiver in disgust at the thought. From what Phil told me, he is a few older than me but has a great head on his shoulders.

Either way, I'm not comfortable sharing my space with someone else.

We approach the black dog with pointy ears who kept barking and flashing its canine at Phil.

“Rocco down.” he demands but the dog continues barking. “I said down boy.”

Rolling my eyes, I dig my hands into my purse and took out a jerky stick then bit the packaging to open it. I wave it around the rough looking mutt and his nose twitches.

“Work smarter not harder, Phil.” I say, casually tossing the stick to the mutt.

“Could have told me he has a dog. I'm more of a fish person myself.” I mutter, stepping into the house.

It smells like weed, stale beer and yesterday's sex in here. But overall, the kitchen is clean.

“Hello?” Phil calls out, quickly tossing an old burger wrapper into the red trash can beside him.

Rocco burst through the doggy door burrowing his way towards the kitchen where a man stands casually against the threshold leading into the kitchen.

My spine stiffens as ice trickle its way through my bloodstream.

It's him.

AdelineHe was furious. He was pulsing with it. One hand clutched the steering wheel, his knuckles white and his other hand on the gearshift clenching hard like he wanted to strangle someone. He overheard the incident with Wesley and I. He must think I’m pathetic that I’m paying for Wesley’s stuff and tolerating his bullshit but Wesley has been with me for a while and has stayed with me through the stress. He may not know what I almost did which I will take to my grave but he’s just as important to me.“I’m okay.” I said, wrapping my arms around my torso, my voice scratchy and unsure. “Really.”That seemed to make him more furious. “Yeah because your boyfriend is the best.” Sarcasm drips from his voice as he drives. “Too bad he’s laced with all these deficiencies.”I flashed him a glare but it’s no use. He’s right somehow and I can’t bring myself to deny that or defend Wes. He doesn’t speak anymore and I have never been more grateful for that. He stopped in front of Glazzers and I d

ADELINEAfter that stupid play with the faucet, I haven’t seen Croix anywhere for the past three days. I already started work and because of him, I ran late that day too. I am standing by the counter when Croix walks in with his black sweatpants hanging low on his hips. Is there a ban against clothes here or what?He bites his bottom lip as he moves closer. Stilling, he plays with his lip ring, making my stomach instantly drop. The way he tongues that lip ring makes me wonder about the feel of it. I blink and dart my gaze away.He stepped closer, opened his mouth, his hot breath against my ear reaching my skin. “That’s not an appropriate way to look at your roommate and brother,”He backs away as he leans around me, pouring me a cup of coffee before heading towards the kitchen table to prepare breakfast. This morning, he appears to be tame and that’s a good thing. He begins frying the onions and garlic, the aroma filling the air. It shouldn’t bother me the way it does. But the sight o

ADELINEI woke up in a panic.I forgot to lock the door again. My thighs immediately sealed together, my quads tightening, and my arms circle my body before my eyes even have the chance to speak. My dreams hazy again snd I feel this tightening in my chest that just won’t ease up.I scan my surroundings for any intruder before dragging my hand down my face in a panic. It takes me a moment to calm myself together. I realise that I’m not in my mom’s house or in that dream that I keep forgetting every single time.My stomach rumbled, the pizza wasn’t enough for me and Croix isn’t going to the grocery store for more stock just to be petty to me. Sometimes, he burned hot and cold. I took a knife and stabbed a pepperoni before smearing it on the wall. Maybe it would give them a hint to actually clean the house up.Grabbing my phone, I immediately search through my messages hoping to find a message from Wesley. He didn’t come home last night and I was waiting patiently for him. As expected, t

CROIX“She’s hot.” Eli said before taking a sip of his beer. “Like an innocent apple yet let me step on your neck while you cum type of girl. I’m getting masculine vibes.”“Who’s hot?” Lana asked from my lap, inhaling a blunt as I sat back deeper into the broken couch.“Masculine? Like Matt?" Rocks, one of our friends spoke out coughing through the smoke. “Like she lifts more than Matt?”“Not manly but Masculine.” Eli smirked still day dreaming about her.“What he means is that she possesses masculine traits like persuasive, strategic, ambitious, intimidating and all the whatnot.” Josiah corrects Eli with an eyeroll. Not a bad assessment though. He has always been the smartest of the group but unfortunately in his case his own came with anti-social tendencies. He lacks the ability to socialize outside his tight knit circle. Well versed in technology but zero emphasis on interpersonal connections.“Okay I mean she has these ruthless killer instincts beneath those cute little dimples an

Adeline“Enjoying yourself?” I gasped, falling into the wall at the sound of Croix’s voice behind me. Turning back to the room, I find both men looking at me.“What the fuck?”He shakes his head with a smirk on his face. “Good girls don't curse, Melanie.”I glared at him. I can't believe my name can't pass through his thick skull that he's calling me by his hooker's name. “It's Adeline.”Croix pushed the door the rest of the way open with a hard this, his arm bracing over me as we stood in the frame together.“Croix, what the fuck?” Sigh said, focusing on me.“Got ourselves a stalker.” Croix declares.“I was just…sorry, I…looking for the bathroom.” I hang my head, peering down at the floor in the hallway while absentmindedly rubbing my elbow.Eli rises to his feet, wiping his face with the back of his hand, and takes a few strides forward to reach me. “Wait Melanie girl, right?” He holds out his hand, looks at it and then retracts it immediately wiping it on his jeans. He has a hard-

SIXIt has been a week since that incident and Wesley and I haven’t had sex since then. It was like our movements were monitored and it was disturbing for me. I have yet to be bothered by Croix again even after taking the hottest shower I have ever had in the shared bathroom with no sign of him.I spent my time working to make this room feel homey by hanging my clothes in the closet, setting up a corner for my cello and music stand and organising my makeup on the dresser.
