Chapter 9

Just as I turned to leave, Nancy grabbed my arm, her face twisted with frustration and fury.

"Stop acting like you're the only victim here! Do you really think this whole mess is just my fault?"

I let out a quiet sigh. I knew that unless I laid everything out clearly, she'd never stop chasing me down.

"I have thought about what you said. Our relationship faded over time. I tried to hold on, but all I got from you was impatience and, eventually, betrayal.

"Was it because I wasn't exciting anymore? Or was it because you never really got over Keith?"

I looked her straight in the eye and spoke slowly, each word firm and measured, "Now I understand. You cheated, and you disrespected what we had. You need to take a hard look at yourself. You stopped loving me, and that's not my fault."

Tears welled up in her eyes and slid down her cheeks. Her voice was shaky. "But... I regret it."

Valerie lowered her head, her eyes slightly red."I'm sorry… I was just jealous. Today's my birthday… I thought you'd spend it with me, but you…"Her voice trailed off, the final words trembling.I felt a pang of guilt. "I'm sorry. I didn't know it was your birthday. I didn't even get you a gift."She shook her head hard."It's okay. Can I… hug you? As a birthday present?"She looked up at me, her big eyes glistening with tears. Her expression was so pitiful, it was impossible to say no.I let out a quiet sigh and nodded. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around me, holding on tight, her head resting gently against my chest.I stood there awkwardly, not quite sure where to place my hands. Then suddenly, she stood on tiptoe and gave me a quick kiss on the lips."My birthday wish is to marry you one day."She moved so fast, I didn't even have time to react.Just as I opened my mouth to respond, a shadow darted out from the side.It was Nancy. Her face was pale with r

"If you have any complaints, you're welcome to sue me."I said that and started to walk away, but Nancy suddenly grabbed my hand."Please let me explain. I admit I was involved with Keith, but that was a long time ago. The person I truly, really love is only you. I never once thought about betraying you."She never once thought about betraying me?Her words struck me as laughably absurd.Taking wedding photos with Keith might have been a moment of weakness. But what about sleeping with him? Getting pregnant? Having an abortion? She opened her legs on her own—no one forced her, right?I didn't even want to argue with her. I just shook her hand off sharply."Don't touch me. You're filthy."She stared at me for a long moment, then suddenly smiled."I get it now—you're jealous because I kept in touch with Keith, right? I promise you, I can cut off all contact with him. Can you come home with me now?"After saying that, she reached out to grab my hand again.I smiled coldly and

I looked at Valerie, a bit speechless."Why did you come here?" I asked.Valerie put on a pitiful expression."My dad said if I don't take good care of you, he'll cut off my allowance. You wouldn't be that cruel, right?"I smiled and gently tapped her forehead. After that, whenever she wasn't in class, she practically stuck to me like glue."I need a date for the school dance. You have to help me out."It's not safe for me to live alone. Let's share an apartment—it's safer that way."She always had some reason or excuse to cling to me.Even if I was dense, I understood what she was getting at.But I was too scared to cross that invisible line.I was hesitant, held back by some fear deep inside. Then one time, when she was taking a shower, she suddenly called out my name from the bathroom."I forgot my towel. Could you bring it to me?"I hesitated but picked up the towel and walked over to the door. I cracked it open just a bit.I planned to slip the towel inside, but to

When I highlighted to Howard that his daughter was five years younger than me, he just laughed and said, "Age is just a number."When I met his daughter, Valerie Conner, I was a bit surprised.Howard was big and broad-faced, but Valerie was stunning—absolutely breathtaking.Compared to my awkwardness, Valerie was confident and natural."Mr. Poole, don't feel awkward. My dad's always like that. Just think of me as your tour guide and travel buddy," she joked.During our conversation, I learned she was an art major. Not just that, she was also the school's campus beauty.Over the next few days, she stuck by my side, and she even called me "Hunk".She was easy to get along with. One day, she asked if I wanted to go on a trip, just to relax.I thought about it for a moment. Then I said, "I want to travel to many places across the country."I'd love to visit Stonebridge to see the legendary Guardians of the Realm statues and try the famous smoked brisket sandwiches and cool cucu

No one would be coming to pick Nancy up tomorrow. As soon as Nancy and Keith left, I immediately reached out to the big clients I had brought to the company."I've moved to a new company. If you ever need to collaborate, I can offer you even better deals."Late into the night, I lay awake again, unable to sleep.I kept thinking about how Nancy would react once the wedding started and she realized I had ditched it.What expression would cross her face when she saw the proof of her cheating?Just before dawn, I grabbed my suitcase and headed to the high-speed train station. The exact time we agreed for the bride's pickup arrived just as I boarded the train.About five minutes later, Nancy's call came through.Without hesitation, I switched my phone off.By the time I got off the train and turned it back on, a flood of messages poured in.My phone even lagged for a moment from the sudden rush.[Where are you? It's so late. Why aren't you here yet?[You're already half an hour
