Chapter 1

Author: Yestin
Jocelyn Stanton's POV

Calvin Graham casually draped a thin blanket over me, then cocked a brow at everyone else. "Alright, you've had your fun. Everybody out. Don't get in the way of Josie and me enjoying our wedding night."

I let out a bitter laugh and looked up at him. "Let's break up."

His parents had always thought I was some nobody from a poor family and beneath them. They'd announced that they needed three years to "evaluate" me before they'd agree to our marriage.

For those three years, Calvin had defended me each time his family made things hard for me. He'd held me in his arms and consoled me more times than I could count.

"Josie, nobody gets to bully you as long as I'm here."

If not for this cruel switch on our wedding night, and if I hadn't heard him toss out, oh-so-casually, that he was going to marry Mandy Beech when he knew I'd dreamed about it for years… I might still be fooling myself into believing Calvin's love was real.

Mandy hooked an arm around Calvin's neck, looking like she'd seen it all. "Look at your sweetheart, threatening to break up with you again. Last time she tried to force you into marrying her, she pulled the same stunt.

"What's she after this time? A car, a house, or shares in your company? Honestly, I feel bad for you. Chicks from poor families are the best at milking a guy dry."

Calvin hesitated, glanced at me, then pulled back the hand he'd been about to reach out with.

My so-called best friend, Christine Johnson, stared at me with open contempt and rolled her eyes. "You sure were enjoying yourself when Chester was pistoning into you, weren't you? What are you acting all high and mighty for now?

"Do you really have to kill the mood on such a fun night? You've spent the past six years putting up with this. How come you suddenly can't take a joke anymore?"

I clenched my fists so hard my nails dug into my palms.

She was right. They'd been playing this sick game for six long years.

When I first started dating Calvin, I hadn't even known he had a twin brother. On our very first date, Mandy secretly got Chester to meet me in Calvin's place.

When Chester kissed me, Mandy and Christine had jumped out from the corner with a camera, laughing so hard they had tears in their eyes.

"God, Jocelyn. You're so dumb it's painful to watch. You can't even recognize your own boyfriend?"

"Cal's gonna lose it when he finds out your first kiss went to his brother."

I'd bawled my eyes out, and Calvin had slapped himself over and over. He'd sworn nothing like that would ever happen again.

But countless pranks had followed that one.

Mandy had Chester pretend to be an injured Calvin and tricked me into handing over a whole year's tuition, almost getting me expelled.

When Mom was critically ill and wanted to see Calvin one last time, Mandy had deliberately lured him away and made Chester show up instead.

Mom had lain there on her deathbed, hanging on by a thread as she'd clutched Chester's hand and begged him to take care of me.

All she'd gotten was Christine's merciless mockery. "You need to get your eyes checked, Mrs. Stanton. This is Chester, not Cal! Cal's at a theme park with Mandy right now."

That prank had pushed Mom over the edge and left her with regrets she'd carried to the grave. Right up until the end, she'd been worried about me. Would I be mistreated? Would I ever be happy?

Calvin hadn't shown up until after Mom had been buried. He'd knelt in front of her grave and sworn he would cut Mandy out of his life, that he'd spend the rest of his life treating me well.

Yet the same man who'd promised to protect me had forgotten his vow almost instantly and instead hurt me the most.

The truth was, he'd never really cut ties with Mandy at all. Every promise he'd made had only been meant to placate me.

I slowly looked around at everyone in the room and said, loud and clear, "That's right. I'm done playing your game. Calvin, we're over."

Jocelyn's POVIt was like Calvin couldn't see how cold I was being. He just kept putting on that one-man show that existed only in his head."Josie, I've gotten to the bottom of everything. Mandy bought that trending search about her being a homewrecker herself, and she's also the one who trashed Mom's tombstone. She's a total fake pick-me—she acts all chill and easygoing, but underneath she's vicious as hell."I've already driven the Beech family into bankruptcy. Mandy's parents are both in prison, and she's not some rich heiress anymore. She hit rock bottom and ended up at a massage parlor washing people's feet. I heard she latched onto some rich businessman, and his wife brought people over to teach her a lesson. She's still in the hospital with a broken leg."As for Christine, I got back at her for being such a traitorous snake, too. Auric Holdings fired her, and the entire industry blacklisted her. She's now scrubbing public toilets for a living and only earns 1,500 dollars a

Jocelyn's POVBefore I knew it, I'd already been living in Livron for three months. I hugged my books to my chest and stared at the buildings half-hidden in the fog, a little dazed. It had only been three months, but everything that had happened with Calvin felt so far away, like it belonged to another lifetime. In a world this big, love and hate both felt so small.I walked onto campus and, like always, headed straight for the library. But at the entrance, I ran into a familiar face. After three months apart, Calvin was suddenly standing in front of me. I almost didn't recognize him. He'd lost so much weight. His cheeks were sunken in, and his already sharp jawline looked even more bony and stark, to the point of being a little frightening. When he saw me, a sudden light flickered in his dull eyes. He shoved a big bag of snacks into my arms, his voice a little too eager. "Josie, I knew you'd come to the library. Here, take these. I hauled them all the way from back home. They're

Third-Person POV"Enough!" Calvin roared. He hurled the stack of evidence Louis had compiled straight at Mandy's face. His eyes were bloodshot as he glared at her. If looks could kill, she would already be six feet under."The trending search about you being a homewrecker was something you paid people to push. Why did you pin it on Jocelyn? And Mrs. Stanton's grave… You didn't even spare an old lady's resting place. Are you even human? I've seen animals with more conscience than you!"The thick stack of documents smacked Mandy in the face, and the pain brought tears to her eyes. She'd been pampered since childhood and had never suffered like this. But compared to the sting on her skin, Calvin's words cut far deeper. From childhood till now, this was the first time he'd ever spoken to her so harshly. She bit her lower lip, feeling wronged, but she still met Calvin's gaze head-on, refusing to back down."Yeah, I did it. So what? Jocelyn just had to get in the way of our friendship

Third-Person POVLouis slowly shook his head, then carefully handed Calvin a thick stack of documents. He said, "We still haven't found any trace of Mrs. Graham, but I did find this. The posts accusing Ms. Beech of being a homewrecker weren't ordered by Mrs. Graham at all. They were… they were posted by Ms. Beech herself."Also, Mrs. Stanton's headstone wasn't vandalized by random trolls online. I pulled the cemetery surveillance—Ms. Beech was the one who had people splash the animal blood on it. As for the curses scrawled on the stone, Ms. Beech and Ms. Johnson wrote them using fade-resistant paint. Our guys practically broke their backs trying to scrub it all off."Calvin shot to his feet, murderous fury flaring in his eyes. That bitch Mandy—she'd orchestrated every last bit of it!He should've seen it coming.Jocelyn had always been kind; she never wanted to make enemies of anyone. Even when she wasn't making much, she still set aside money every month to donate to impoverishe

Sometimes he just spaced out; sometimes he smiled like an idiot.Jocelyn was the most unique woman he'd ever met.Back in college, the other students were either holed up in their dorms playing games or out shopping and clubbing all day. Only Jocelyn went to the library every single day without fail.At first, Calvin thought she was interesting and couldn't help but watch her every move. Later, he started getting up early on purpose so he could snag the seat next to her. Sitting beside her and watching her study somehow felt more fun than racing cars or going diving. He knew then that he'd fallen for her. He'd pulled out every trick he knew for chasing women—flowers, confessions, and candlelit dinners.Jocelyn had never dated before, so she'd fallen hard and fast. Third-Person POVCalvin dug his nails hard into his thigh, forcing himself to calm down. He and Jocelyn had so many mutual friends. Even if she was mad enough to block him, he could still track her down through someone else. With that thought, the panic in his chest finally settled, if only a little. He didn't waste a second and immediately called Mandy."Mandy, help me get in touch with Josie. She blocked me," he said.A moment later, harsh, mocking laughter crackled through the speaker. "She blocked me, too. You're way too naive, Cal. Can't you even see through a woman playing hard to get? If you go running after her right now, you'll lose. She'll bleed you dry the second you show up!"If you really consider me a friend, then listen to me and let her be. I bet you anything that within 24 hours, Jocelyn will come crawling back in tears, begging—"Calvin hung up before she could finish, stabbing the screen with his finger in irritation.Whether Jocelyn was actually hurt or just
