Chapter 3

Author: Yestin
Jocelyn's POV

Back at the office, I started packing my things.

Out of nowhere, Calvin stormed in, grabbed my wrist, and snarled, "Jocelyn, who gave you the right to spread rumors online that Mandy's a homewrecker? Do you have any idea how important a woman's reputation is? How is she supposed to show her face in public after this?"

I frowned. "What are you even talking about? I know nothing about that."

His face was dark as he shoved his phone in front of me.

That was how I learned that "Beech Heiress Mandy Beech Is a Homewrecker" had shot to number one on the trending list.

Someone had uploaded clips from my wedding with Calvin and lined them up next to shots of him shopping with Mandy on his back.

The comments section on her socials was flooded with people calling her a homewrecker, and it even tanked Beech Group's stock price.

I stared at the wall of trending hashtags and laughed. I said, "This has nothing to do with me. You have to admit the Internet's right, though. Mandy knew you had a girlfriend and still used being your 'buddy' as an excuse to hang all over you. If that's not being a homewrecker, what is?"

"How dare you slander her!"

Calvin's grip on my wrist tightened like a vise. He squeezed so hard he actually yanked my wrist out of its socket.

Pain shot through me so fiercely my whole body shook, but I still refused to back down.

Calvin finally let go as more students and teachers gathered to watch. He let out a cold laugh and calmly made a phone call.

Within minutes, every trending topic about Mandy vanished from the Internet—Calvin had paid to have them all taken down. At the same time, the intimate photos Mandy had taken of me on my wedding night got leaked.

"Sorry for the spectacle, everyone." Calvin tugged at his tie, his icy gaze sweeping over the crowd. "It's true I held a wedding with Jocelyn, but she's promiscuous by nature. On our wedding night, she climbed into my brother's bed and cheated on me.

"I was devastated. That's why I agreed to marry my childhood friend, Mandy Beech. Ms. Beech has never been the other woman—she's my lawfully wedded wife. It's Jocelyn who's eaten up with jealousy and crying wolf."

Calvin's gaze was unwavering, every word firm and absolute.

For a second, I was yanked back to the day I was granted my guaranteed spot in grad school. Rumors had exploded overnight about me being some campus seductress who'd slept with the dean to get my recommendation.

Back then, Calvin had caught the ringleader and beaten him to a pulp. He'd snarled, "Josie earned everything she has through her own hard work. If anyone dares to spread lies about my girlfriend again, I'll make sure they never open their filthy mouth again."

I knew I would never forget the look in his eyes that day for as long as I lived. It was so sure, so stubborn, and so bright—just like it was now.

Only this time, it wasn't for me. I wasn't the one he was trying to protect anymore.

…

Soon, Calvin held an emergency press conference.

He flashed my intimate photos on the big screen in front of every major news outlet, then held up his marriage certificate with Mandy.

"Jocelyn Stanton betrayed me first. Only after that did Mandy and I get married. Mandy is my wife in every legal and moral sense. I won't let anyone smear her as a homewrecker."

Public opinion flipped almost instantly.

Suddenly, Calvin and Mandy became a friends-to-lovers fairytale, childhood sweethearts who had saved each other. And me? I was branded the shameless other woman whose blood everyone was out for.

The university's president came to me. Right there in front of faculty and students, he slapped a dismissal notice across my face.

"Jocelyn Stanton, your immoral conduct has brought severe disgrace to our university. Per the board's unanimous decision, your professorship is revoked. You're fired."

My cheek went numb from the blow, and a hot, stinging pain spread across my face.

Calvin knew better than anyone that teaching was my lifelong dream, yet he'd still chosen to burn my entire life down.

I couldn't even remember how I walked out of the campus. All I remembered were the contemptuous looks from everyone around me, slicing into me like knives.

Jocelyn's POVIt was like Calvin couldn't see how cold I was being. He just kept putting on that one-man show that existed only in his head."Josie, I've gotten to the bottom of everything. Mandy bought that trending search about her being a homewrecker herself, and she's also the one who trashed Mom's tombstone. She's a total fake pick-me—she acts all chill and easygoing, but underneath she's vicious as hell."I've already driven the Beech family into bankruptcy. Mandy's parents are both in prison, and she's not some rich heiress anymore. She hit rock bottom and ended up at a massage parlor washing people's feet. I heard she latched onto some rich businessman, and his wife brought people over to teach her a lesson. She's still in the hospital with a broken leg."As for Christine, I got back at her for being such a traitorous snake, too. Auric Holdings fired her, and the entire industry blacklisted her. She's now scrubbing public toilets for a living and only earns 1,500 dollars a

Jocelyn's POVBefore I knew it, I'd already been living in Livron for three months. I hugged my books to my chest and stared at the buildings half-hidden in the fog, a little dazed. It had only been three months, but everything that had happened with Calvin felt so far away, like it belonged to another lifetime. In a world this big, love and hate both felt so small.I walked onto campus and, like always, headed straight for the library. But at the entrance, I ran into a familiar face. After three months apart, Calvin was suddenly standing in front of me. I almost didn't recognize him. He'd lost so much weight. His cheeks were sunken in, and his already sharp jawline looked even more bony and stark, to the point of being a little frightening. When he saw me, a sudden light flickered in his dull eyes. He shoved a big bag of snacks into my arms, his voice a little too eager. "Josie, I knew you'd come to the library. Here, take these. I hauled them all the way from back home. They're

Third-Person POV"Enough!" Calvin roared. He hurled the stack of evidence Louis had compiled straight at Mandy's face. His eyes were bloodshot as he glared at her. If looks could kill, she would already be six feet under."The trending search about you being a homewrecker was something you paid people to push. Why did you pin it on Jocelyn? And Mrs. Stanton's grave… You didn't even spare an old lady's resting place. Are you even human? I've seen animals with more conscience than you!"The thick stack of documents smacked Mandy in the face, and the pain brought tears to her eyes. She'd been pampered since childhood and had never suffered like this. But compared to the sting on her skin, Calvin's words cut far deeper. From childhood till now, this was the first time he'd ever spoken to her so harshly. She bit her lower lip, feeling wronged, but she still met Calvin's gaze head-on, refusing to back down."Yeah, I did it. So what? Jocelyn just had to get in the way of our friendship

Third-Person POVLouis slowly shook his head, then carefully handed Calvin a thick stack of documents. He said, "We still haven't found any trace of Mrs. Graham, but I did find this. The posts accusing Ms. Beech of being a homewrecker weren't ordered by Mrs. Graham at all. They were… they were posted by Ms. Beech herself."Also, Mrs. Stanton's headstone wasn't vandalized by random trolls online. I pulled the cemetery surveillance—Ms. Beech was the one who had people splash the animal blood on it. As for the curses scrawled on the stone, Ms. Beech and Ms. Johnson wrote them using fade-resistant paint. Our guys practically broke their backs trying to scrub it all off."Calvin shot to his feet, murderous fury flaring in his eyes. That bitch Mandy—she'd orchestrated every last bit of it!He should've seen it coming.Jocelyn had always been kind; she never wanted to make enemies of anyone. Later, he started getting up early on purpose so he could snag the seat next to her. Third-Person POVCalvin dug his nails hard into his thigh, forcing himself to calm down. He and Jocelyn had so many mutual friends. Even if she was mad enough to block him, he could still track her down through someone else. With that thought, the panic in his chest finally settled, if only a little. He didn't waste a second and immediately called Mandy."Mandy, help me get in touch with Josie. She blocked me," he said.A moment later, harsh, mocking laughter crackled through the speaker. "She blocked me, too. You're way too naive, Cal. Can't you even see through a woman playing hard to get? If you go running after her right now, you'll lose. She'll bleed you dry the second you show up!"If you really consider me a friend, then listen to me and let her be. I bet you anything that within 24 hours, Jocelyn will come crawling back in tears, begging—"Calvin hung up before she could finish, stabbing the screen with his finger in irritation.Whether Jocelyn was actually hurt or just
