Chapter 4

Author: Wedding Seven
The turning point came on the second day after Francis left for a business trip to Efrida.

With him gone, the house became Barbara's kingdom. She sent all the household staff away and had me locked in the villa's basement.

"Stay down there and think about what you've done, you little brat. When Francis comes back, I'll tell him you ran away from home." She sneered from the other side of the door.

The basement was cold, damp, and pitch black. I sat quietly on a torn-up cardboard box in the corner, closing my eyes and resting.

Honestly, was that the best she could do? This game was boring.

Around midnight, I heard faint footsteps outside.

"Ethan… Ethan, are you in there?" It was Emily. Her voice was shaky and tearful.

Through the gap beneath the door, she managed to push a crushed cookie and a small bottle of water.

"Ethan, I snuck out to see you. Don't be scared," Emily sobbed and muttered. "When I found out I had a brother, I was so happy. But I was worried too. I was afraid that bad woman would hurt you too.

"Whenever Dad isn't home, she locks me in dark rooms, forces me to eat leftovers that I'm allergic to, and makes me wear clothes with needles hidden inside them. And she doesn't allow me to tell Dad… I can't fight back, and Dad always believes her.

"Ethan, I've been saying money in my piggy bank. When I have a hundred dollars, I'll take you with me, and we'll run away together. We'll never come back to this awful house…"

Listening to the little girl who looked just like me cry outside the door, a strange irritation rose within me. She was too weak, so weak that it was embarrassing.

But at the same time, she really considered me her brother, so she was my responsibility. And nobody could mess with what was mine.

I got up and pulled a piece of wire from my pocket, slipped it into the lock, and gave it a few casual twists. With a click, the door swung open.

I had never been trapped. I'd only stayed in the basement because I wanted to see what moronic thing Barbara would do next. Strangely, I was excited because it had been a long time since anyone had dared challenge me.

When Emily saw me step out, she was so shocked that she forgot to wipe away her tears.

I walked over and roughly brushed the tears from her face with my sleeve. I said coldly, "What are you crying for? Shut up. Just watch."

Emily was frightened by the look in my eyes. She covered her mouth obediently.

I headed straight for the kitchen and grabbed three tubes of extremely spicy paste. Then, I quietly slipped into Barbara's bedroom. She was wearing a beauty face mask, dead asleep like a lazy pig.

I opened the tubes of spicy paste, then swiftly squeezed the contents into her eyes, nostrils, and ears, firmly pressing it into her orifices.

The burning sensation jolted Barbara awake instantly, and she let out a blood-curdling scream. She frantically flopped around on the bed, scratching desperately at her face. Tears and snot, mixed with the red-colored paste, flowed down her face. She looked worse than a ghoul.

She fumbled around aimlessly, trying to press the bedside call button to call for help.

Her screams annoyed me. I pulled out a slingshot from my pocket, loaded it with a steel ball, and stretched the elastic band taut. I aimed the ball at her stomach, which was already convulsing in pain.

Snap! The steel ball shot straight at her abdomen.

Barbara groaned in pain, her entire body curling like a cooked shrimp. She fell off the bed and landed on the ground with a loud thud, dry heaving in agony, too exhausted to even scream.

I walked over, tore off a piece of fabric from beside her bed, and roughly stuffed it into her mouth, silencing every sound she tried to make. Then, I pulled out a dog leash I'd prepared in advance and fastened it around her neck.

"Come on, Barbara." I tugged on the leash, my voice completely flat. "Let's go play a more exciting game."

I pulled and dragged her toward the basement. Emily hid around the corner of the hallway, staring at the scene in utter shock, too terrified to even breathe.

I hauled Barbara into a metal dog cage at the very back of the basement. Barbara had bought it just a few days ago. I didn't know who she intended to lock up in it, but dogs certainly weren't meant to be kept in the basement.

After Francis and I returned home, Emily stood in front of me with tears in her eyes. Her hands were clasped together. After standing there for a long period of time, she finally managed to say, "I'm sorry, Ethan… I'm too useless. I let that bad woman pick on me all the time, and I almost got you bitten by that dog."Through her tears, she added, "From now on, I'll eat more so I can grow big and strong. Then, I'll be able to protect you."I stared at her weak and timid expression without a hint of emotion on my face. Then, I reached out and pinched her chubby cheeks before giving them a hard tug."Shut up, and stop crying," I said coldly. "You just need to remember this. You're mine. If I haven't given you permission to die, not even the Grim Reaper will be able to take you away from me."Instead of feeling frightened, Emily broke into a smile and nodded firmly. She looked as if she finally found someone she could rely on.…Later that night, Francis asked me to head to his stud

Francis' statements hit Barbara like a bolt from the blue."Y-You knew? No—that's not true. I can explain, Francis…" she cried.Ignoring the pain she was in due to the miscarriage, she tried to sit upright and grab onto Francis' clothes. But to her dismay, he swatted her hand away in disgust."Every night, I glance at that fake face of yours and feel sick to my stomach!" he spat, not bothering to hide the contempt in his voice. As he adjusted the cuff on his sleeve, he continued, "Did you think that you could replace Wendy just by copying her appearance and the way she spoke? You can't hold a candle to her."As I watched everything unfold from the sidelines, I suddenly found the situation slightly amusing. As it turned out, the person who was the best at pretending in this household wasn't Barbara or me. It was my seemingly devoted and sophisticated father."Since you're so desperate for answers, I'll make sure you understand everything before you die." At the snap of his fin

Before I could finish speaking, I dodged Barbara's hands as she tried to grab me.The moment she lunged forward and lost her balance, I stuck my foot out and gave her a hard shove in the back.Barbara let out a chilling scream as she went tumbling down the steep staircase. The sound of bones striking against the hard marble floors echoed through the spacious villa. It was delightful to listen to.Barbara rolled all the way down before her body crashed onto the very bottom of the stairs. I, on the other hand, stood at the top of the staircase and looked down at her from above. Her entire body was twitching as she lay curled up on the floor in pain. Moments later, thick, dark blood began to gush out from beneath her dress. The silence in the villa was soon broken by the sound of ambulance sirens. In the hospital's VIP room, the overwhelming scent of disinfectant did very little to mask the stench of blood in the air. Barbara lay on the bed. Her face was as white as a sheet, and

I believed in returning favors. Barbara wanted my sister dead. So, it was only fair that the unborn thing inside her suffered the same fate. During the day, I wandered aimlessly around the vast backyard behind the villa like a bored child. The Sterling estate had been extravagantly landscaped. To give the grounds an exotic feel, all kinds of unusual plants had been planted throughout the yard.In one secluded corner, I came across a large patch of oleander. In a shaded area behind a rockery, I also found a medicinal plant I recognized from an old, battered book in the doctor's office at the orphanage. The doctor had once told me that the plant was extremely dangerous for pregnant women. According to him, even the smallest amount could end up killing the baby in the womb. Using a small hand shovel, I dug up several of its roots. Afterward, I picked some leaves off of one of the oleander plants.Every morning, Barbara would drink a prenatal smoothie prepared by a nutritionist

I stared at the moldy bread on my plate and took a bite without batting an eye.The mold on the bread didn't bother me. After all, at my third foster home, I had to fight dogs for scraps from their bowls.Emily, on the other hand, didn't feel the same way. She was a pampered little crybaby. After taking just one bite, she threw up. Moments later, she burst into tears while she clutched her empty stomach. Her crying got on my nerves. So, in the middle of the night, I used a piece of wire to pick the electronic lock on the kitchen door. Then, I cooked her two expensive steaks. While I was at it, I dumped all of Barbara's expensive beauty supplements down the sink. The next morning, I found a dead rat in my bed. Its intestines were spilling out of its body, and the stench was absolutely revolting. Barbara stood just outside the door, breathing heavily. If I had to guess, she was probably waiting eagerly for me to let out a terrified scream.I pulled back the covers and picked up t

The moment Barbara saw Francis, she immediately covered her arms, which were covered in whip marks, and burst into tears. Pointing at me, she cried out hysterically, "Francis! You're finally home! Ethan is a sociopath! While you were away, he locked me in a dog cage in the basement and tortured me for days. Look at these injuries! He did this to me!"Francis hurried inside. He looked at the undeniable, horrifying whip marks all over Barbara's body, then at me, a six-year-old who barely stood up to his waist. There were still clear red marks around my neck from where Barbara had just strangled me.Shock and doubt filled Francis' face. How could a six-year-old child possibly have locked an adult in a basement and tortured her? But there was no denying the injuries covering Barbara's body.I immediately rolled my eyes. Then, I let my body topple backward, pretending to pass out from exhaustion into Francis' arms."Ethan!" Terrified, Francis scooped me up and shouted toward the doo
