Chapter 3

Author: Wedding Seven
The villa was so enormous that it felt like a maze.

Francis carried me upstairs and pushed open the door to a south-facing children's bedroom. Thick blackout curtains covered the windows, and the air was filled with the smell of medicine.

I immediately spotted the little girl hiding behind the curtains, trembling from head to toe. That was my twin sister, Emily Sterling.

She had soft, fair skin and features so strikingly similar to mine. Her face was flushed bright red with a fever, and damp strands of hair clung to her forehead.

The moment she saw Francis carrying me inside, she stumbled forward on her unsteady little legs. She seemed eager to get closer to see me properly, yet she didn't dare to approach. Her large eyes fixed on me with intense longing.

"Emily, why are you burning up so badly? Where's the nanny? Martha!" Francis touched Emily's forehead and instantly panicked, shouting for the help.

Several nannies rushed into the room, frantically preparing to carry Emily to the medical room for a fever shot. As one of them lifted Emily into her arms, Emily struggled and stretched a hand toward me, as if she wanted to grab onto me.

As her sleeve slid down, I briefly caught sight of her arm. It was fair and delicate but covered in purple bruises. There were also pinch marks and even tiny needle marks.

I looked away after a single glance. It was not my problem.

I didn't understand sympathy. My logic was that the strong preyed on the weak. That was just natural order. As long as nobody bothered me, I couldn't be bothered to get involved.

After Emily was carried away, the room fell quiet. Francis set me down on a couch and carefully began applying ointment to the "old bruise" on my arm.

As he did that, his gaze gradually grew sorrowful. "Ethan, Emily is your twin sister." His voice grew hoarse, as though he were reliving an agonizing memory.

"When your mother gave birth to you two, she suffered excessive blood loss and died. At the same time, my company was under attack by rivals. Everything was chaotic. Those people took advantage of the situation and broke into the hospital, wanting to take both of you.

"The security only managed to save Emily. And you… You were taken. I spent six years looking for you. It wasn't until recent DNA database matching that I finally found you."

With that, he walked to a safe and pulled out an old photograph that had been preserved with great care. He handed it to me, saying, "This is your mother, Wendy White. You look exactly like her."

I lowered my eyes to the photo. The woman in it wore a gentle smile. Her eyes and features were indeed very similar to mine and that weak Emily's. But what interested me more was that she also looked somewhat like Barbara, the stepmother downstairs whose dress I'd just sliced.

I raised my head and looked past Francis' shoulder toward the half-open door. Standing in the shadows of the hallway was Barbara. At some point, she'd already changed her clothes.

Her eyes were locked on the photograph in Francis' hand, then on me. The sweetness had vanished from her face, replaced by unconcealable resentment and jealousy. I met her gaze without expression.

This family seemed even more entertaining than I'd expected.

For the next two weeks, Barbara played the role of a loving stepmother perfectly whenever Francis was around. I found myself wondering whether she had given up on playing games with me.

At night, I often heard noises coming from the master bedroom. Barbara always wore revealing nightgowns and tried every trick imaginable to seduce Francis. She clearly was desperate to have a child of her own so that she could secure her place in the family.

After Francis and I returned home, Emily stood in front of me with tears in her eyes. Her hands were clasped together. After standing there for a long period of time, she finally managed to say, "I'm sorry, Ethan… I'm too useless. I let that bad woman pick on me all the time, and I almost got you bitten by that dog."Through her tears, she added, "From now on, I'll eat more so I can grow big and strong. Then, I'll be able to protect you."I stared at her weak and timid expression without a hint of emotion on my face. Then, I reached out and pinched her chubby cheeks before giving them a hard tug."Shut up, and stop crying," I said coldly. "You just need to remember this. You're mine. If I haven't given you permission to die, not even the Grim Reaper will be able to take you away from me."Instead of feeling frightened, Emily broke into a smile and nodded firmly. She looked as if she finally found someone she could rely on.…Later that night, Francis asked me to head to his stud

Francis' statements hit Barbara like a bolt from the blue."Y-You knew? No—that's not true. I can explain, Francis…" she cried.Ignoring the pain she was in due to the miscarriage, she tried to sit upright and grab onto Francis' clothes. But to her dismay, he swatted her hand away in disgust."Every night, I glance at that fake face of yours and feel sick to my stomach!" he spat, not bothering to hide the contempt in his voice. As he adjusted the cuff on his sleeve, he continued, "Did you think that you could replace Wendy just by copying her appearance and the way she spoke? You can't hold a candle to her."As I watched everything unfold from the sidelines, I suddenly found the situation slightly amusing. As it turned out, the person who was the best at pretending in this household wasn't Barbara or me. It was my seemingly devoted and sophisticated father."Since you're so desperate for answers, I'll make sure you understand everything before you die." At the snap of his fin

Before I could finish speaking, I dodged Barbara's hands as she tried to grab me.The moment she lunged forward and lost her balance, I stuck my foot out and gave her a hard shove in the back.Barbara let out a chilling scream as she went tumbling down the steep staircase. The sound of bones striking against the hard marble floors echoed through the spacious villa. It was delightful to listen to.Barbara rolled all the way down before her body crashed onto the very bottom of the stairs. I, on the other hand, stood at the top of the staircase and looked down at her from above. Her entire body was twitching as she lay curled up on the floor in pain. Moments later, thick, dark blood began to gush out from beneath her dress. The silence in the villa was soon broken by the sound of ambulance sirens. In the hospital's VIP room, the overwhelming scent of disinfectant did very little to mask the stench of blood in the air. Barbara lay on the bed. Her face was as white as a sheet, and

I believed in returning favors. Barbara wanted my sister dead. So, it was only fair that the unborn thing inside her suffered the same fate. During the day, I wandered aimlessly around the vast backyard behind the villa like a bored child. The Sterling estate had been extravagantly landscaped. To give the grounds an exotic feel, all kinds of unusual plants had been planted throughout the yard.In one secluded corner, I came across a large patch of oleander. In a shaded area behind a rockery, I also found a medicinal plant I recognized from an old, battered book in the doctor's office at the orphanage. The doctor had once told me that the plant was extremely dangerous for pregnant women. According to him, even the smallest amount could end up killing the baby in the womb. Using a small hand shovel, I dug up several of its roots. Afterward, I picked some leaves off of one of the oleander plants.Every morning, Barbara would drink a prenatal smoothie prepared by a nutritionist

I stared at the moldy bread on my plate and took a bite without batting an eye.The mold on the bread didn't bother me. After all, at my third foster home, I had to fight dogs for scraps from their bowls.Emily, on the other hand, didn't feel the same way. She was a pampered little crybaby. After taking just one bite, she threw up. Moments later, she burst into tears while she clutched her empty stomach. Her crying got on my nerves. So, in the middle of the night, I used a piece of wire to pick the electronic lock on the kitchen door. Then, I cooked her two expensive steaks. While I was at it, I dumped all of Barbara's expensive beauty supplements down the sink. The next morning, I found a dead rat in my bed. Its intestines were spilling out of its body, and the stench was absolutely revolting. Barbara stood just outside the door, breathing heavily. If I had to guess, she was probably waiting eagerly for me to let out a terrified scream.I pulled back the covers and picked up t

The moment Barbara saw Francis, she immediately covered her arms, which were covered in whip marks, and burst into tears. Pointing at me, she cried out hysterically, "Francis! You're finally home! Ethan is a sociopath! While you were away, he locked me in a dog cage in the basement and tortured me for days. Look at these injuries! He did this to me!"Francis hurried inside. He looked at the undeniable, horrifying whip marks all over Barbara's body, then at me, a six-year-old who barely stood up to his waist. There were still clear red marks around my neck from where Barbara had just strangled me.Shock and doubt filled Francis' face. How could a six-year-old child possibly have locked an adult in a basement and tortured her? But there was no denying the injuries covering Barbara's body.I immediately rolled my eyes. Then, I let my body topple backward, pretending to pass out from exhaustion into Francis' arms."Ethan!" Terrified, Francis scooped me up and shouted toward the doo
