Chapter 2

Author: Bags Galore
At 11:00 pm, Carly walked in smelling of grilled meat.

She set a clear plastic takeout box on the table.

Inside were a few yellowed lettuce leaves and dry, boiled meat, without even a speck of black pepper.

"I told the chef no salt. Remember to do 40 minutes of fasted cardio when you finish this. You probably drank a lot of water trying on suits today. We can't let your muscle definition get soft."

She spoke as naturally as she had every single night for the past six years.

As I opened the box, the greasy scent of grilled meat drifting off her jacket overpowered the bitter smell of the lettuce.

Carly took off her jacket. A smear of dipping sauce stained the cuff of her blouse.

Realizing it, she pulled out a wet wipe to clean it off, then casually asked if the suit reservation had been changed back.

"I canceled it," I said.

Her movements paused. "Daniel Nash, I already promised I'd go with you on Sunday."

"You promised today, too."

She frowned at me, weighing whether my words were worth an argument.

Finally, she softened her voice. "Aiden just came back. He doesn't know his way around. Let's just say I didn't plan well today. I'll cover the cancellation loss, and we can pick a new suit."

She pulled out her phone and transferred 2,600 dollars right then and there.

That was probably her version of an apology.

I didn't accept the transfer. Instead, I pushed the box of boiled greens back. "Don't ever decide what I eat again."

"Fine."

She agreed so quickly that I looked up.

Carly walked over to the smart scale and kicked it straight with her foot.

"Decide for yourself, then. But you have to make sure your muscle mass doesn't drop, and that your body fat doesn't bounce back. The wedding is only a month away. The suit sizes are already locked in."

It turned out her compromise was just phrasing a command differently.

I took off my engagement ring and set it down beside the takeout box.

Carly's gaze finally darkened at the sight of the ring. "Is it really necessary to blow things up like this?"

"The note in the target field says his name," I said.

"That was a body-shaping template from six years ago. You trained and built your physique using this program, which proves it works. Are you going to throw away six years over a few words?"

Four years ago, I slipped in the bathroom from severe dehydration and slammed my shoulder hard against the tiles.

Carly had helped me up onto the couch, but her first question wasn't whether my body hurt. It was to check my macronutrient logs for the day.

She calculated that my carb intake was too low, which caused the dizziness, but punished me by doubling my cardio every day for a week as the price of "being careless".

That night, she sat by the bed and ice-packed my shoulder three times.

I had interpreted her coldness as strictness and her punishments as high standards for me.

The condensation from the takeout box trickled down the edge, dampening the ring.

I spoke up. "You said that we'd get married once my body fat dropped to 8%."

"You've already done it."

Carly picked up the ring, wiped it clean with a tissue, and reached for my hand.

Her fingertips were still warm.

"The wedding next month goes on as planned. Let's drop today's nonsense. From now on, I'll try to spend less time alone with Aiden."

The ring pressed against my knuckle.

I didn't pull away right away.

Right then, her phone lit up with a voice message from Aiden.

"Carly, you left your jacket at my place. I'll bring it over to the auto show tomorrow, okay?"

Carly's hand tightened slightly.

She didn't reply, but she didn't deny that she'd be spending tomorrow with him either.

I pulled my hand back. The ring dropped onto the table with a sharp click.

"Tomorrow is the wedding menu tasting," I said.

"The auto show wraps up by noon. I'll make it."

"I want you not to go."

For the first time in six years, I explicitly asked her to choose between Aiden and me.

Carly stared at me for a few seconds, then placed the ring back in the box.

"Danny, I already said I'd make it back. Don't turn a normal friendship into something so ugly."

She picked up her phone and opened the fitness app out of habit.

Seconds later, her expression shifted. "You unlinked the smart scale?"

I snapped the takeout box shut and tossed it in the trash. "It's not going to report to you anymore."

Six months passed since then, and I hadn't stepped on a body scale in a very long time.My follow-up test results showed that my hormone levels were back within the normal range, my face had regained its color, and my chronically strained joints had slowly healed. When I first transitioned back to a normal diet, I still found myself calculating every bite of carbs and protein.Halfway through a plate of pasta, calorie figures would automatically pop into my head.Walking past a burger joint, even though I wanted one, I'd always check how many sets of squats I'd done that day first.Later, I set only one rule for myself—I should eat when hungry and stop when full.During the first week, I could only manage it for a single meal.By the second month, I started forgetting to keep track altogether. Then came a morning after breakfast—I had walked quite a distance down the street before realizing I hadn't measured my fasted morning weight. There was no panic at that moment, nor the

Before moving out of my old apartment, I went back for the final handover. The place was already mostly empty. That smart scale was still sitting right outside the bathroom door, in the exact spot it was when I left.Carly sat in the living room, her phone stuck on the fitness app's blank home screen. The platform had wiped the data and revoked all her administrative access. The progress curves that used to auto-update daily were now replaced by a single system prompt—no user bound. When she heard my footsteps, she immediately turned off her screen. "I want to keep the scale."I walked into the bathroom and picked it up.Six years ago, when Carly first brought it home, she stuck a little note on the bottom. "For when Danny puts on the sharpest suit."The slip of paper had already yellowed.I peeled it off and tossed both the scale and the note straight into the recycling bin outside the door.Carly followed me to the entryway, reaching her hand out for a brief second befor

The day the data deletion went into effect, Carly asked to meet me one last time. She chose an ordinary diner and didn't order for me.After handing over the menu, she even looked away, deliberately avoiding whatever I selected.I ordered a plate of spaghetti bolognese and added scrambled eggs.Carly just asked for a glass of water."What Aiden said was true." Her voice sounded raspy when she spoke. "Back when he left the country, he was the one who ended things."She finally admitted that the past romance she had packaged as a bittersweet regret was nothing more than an obsession born out of rejection. After Aiden left, she had kept the data from when his muscle definition was at its peak. Then I showed up. I was gentle, dependent on her, and willing to trust every single decision she made.So she took the exact set of rules she failed to impose on Aiden and forced them entirely onto me."At first, I really wanted to prove him wrong."Carly paused. "I wanted to prove that s

Carly and I met in a meeting room near the notary's office to handle our joint account and lease. Our total wedding fund sat at 23 thousand dollars. After deducting my share of the losses, what I paid back amounted to less than 3,000 dollars.Carly had already covered the shortfall and even listed the medical expenses as a separate line item. She attached no conditions for reconciliation this time."I'm stepping off the lease, and the deposit is yours. All the money for canceling the wedding has been put back in." Carly slid the signed documents across the table. "Take a look. If anything doesn't look right, I'll change it."This was the first time since the breakup that she had genuinely handed me the decision-making power.I flipped to the final page, confirmed nothing was missing, and picked up the pen to sign.Carly's gaze lingered on my hands. In the past, whenever we signed wedding paperwork, she always marked where I needed to sign and even dictated which pen to use.N

Three days after the breakup, the reception desk at my short-term apartment was stacked high with things sent by Carly.A newly tailored suit sat there, looser around the shoulders and waist, no longer forcing that extreme inverted-triangle figure. There were also 12 boxes of the high-calorie pastries I used to crave but never dared to buy, along with an unlimited credit card. The suit carried no cancellation terms, and the pastry packaging bore no nutrition labels. It was obvious she was trying her best to avoid anything that might set me off. When the front desk asked if I'd sign for the delivery, I stood before the suit for a long, silent moment.Eight years ago, Carly hadn't started micromanaging my body fat yet.Back then, after my winter basketball practice, she would buy me a roasted sweet potato and snap off the sweetest center section to hand to me.In those days, she remembered I was sensitive to the cold, and she remembered how I'd knit my brows if I bit into a char

Carly chased me all the way to the restaurant exit, ignoring Aiden for the very first time. She blocked the elevator doors, clutching the settlement agreement and medical report so tightly they crumpled in her fist."You're canceling the wedding just over that note?" she asked."Move.""Daniel Nash, I asked you a question."The elevator doors slid open, and I stepped inside.Carly followed me in and held down the open button to keep the elevator from going down. She was desperate to reduce this whole conflict to a simple note.As long as she deleted those few words, she could go right back to playing the devoted partner strictly watching over her fiance."You should actually take a look at the medical report," I said. The report was filled with words like severe stomach ulcers, chronic joint strain, and endocrine and hormonal disruptions brought on by years of dangerously low body fat.It spanned four years, with every single report tucked beneath my body fat logs.As Carly
