When the store assistant came back with her tablet, her pace had noticeably slowed.

"Mr. Nash, the reservation has been switched to Aiden Turner. But this suit was tailored to your unusually broad shoulders and narrow waist. It might not fit him at all."

She glanced at my razor-sharp jawline, hollowed out by extreme fat loss, and swallowed the rest of her sentence.

The suit on the fitting platform looked sharp and crisp.

To fit into it, I had spent the last half month eating nothing but boiled chicken breast, even cutting out water entirely over the final few days. My waist and shoulders had finally hit the brutal dimensions the designer demanded.

Yet today was the first time I realized those numbers weren't meant for me.

I opened the suit shop's digital order.

Every detail, from the ties and cufflinks to the lining, had Carly Stein's notes written all over it.

Only the groom himself was treated like a replaceable part.

"He's not trying it on. Cancel the primary suit."

The assistant blinked. "Custom pieces only have a refund of 30%. If you cancel now, you're out at least 2,600 dollars."

That money was what I'd saved for our wedding over two years.

My finger hovered over the confirmation button.

My phone buzzed. Carly's name overrode the cancellation screen.

"Why did you change the name on the reservation?"

So she'd finally noticed.

I stared at myself in the mirror, wearing just a shirt. Because of my chronically low body fat, every vein on the back of my hand stood out in stark relief.

"When are you getting here?" I asked.

The line went quiet for a second, followed by the sizzle of meat hitting an iron grill.

"I'm heading over after dropping Aiden off. Don't start messing with the orders just because of a picture. The suit isn't something for you to throw a tantrum over."

"The store closes in 40 minutes," I said calmly.

"Then push it to Sunday. I'll come try it on with you, okay?"

That promise made my finger ease up on the confirmation button.

Six years ago, I first passed out at the gym from low blood sugar, which was brought on by zero carbs and heavy squats.

Carly had rushed me to the hospital, running a red light on the way. She even yelled at me, insisting she'd monitor every single one of my diet and training plans from then on.

Back then, her control felt like a tight safety net.

I genuinely believed she cared more about my body than I did.

Through the phone, Aiden Turner's voice drifted over with a smile. "Carly, I've still got onions on my plate."

Carly made a noise of acknowledgment while covering the mouthpiece.

When she spoke again, her tone had turned impatient. "Danny, I'll be there Sunday. Just change the reservation back, and don't go eating random junk tonight. I packed you some boiled greens and pan-seared chicken breast."

The countdown timer on the cancellation screen had 20 seconds left.

"Did you write that note?" I asked.

She didn't answer right away.

"That was six years ago. How am I supposed to remember every little thing? If it bothers you that much, I'll delete it when I get back."

The fact that she was willing to delete the note and come back to try on the suit with me sounded like she was giving ground.

Yet on the other end, once the onions were picked out, Aiden asked her if they could order an extra plate of pork belly.

Carly said, "Go ahead if you can finish it."

She had never once said that to me.

Right before the cancellation countdown hit zero, I pressed confirm.

The notification for the 2,600-dollar loss popped up, which I ignored.

The assistant pulled back the fitting room curtain.

I took off the suit and handed it back to her. "Cancel Sunday's appointment, too."

I changed back into my workout gear and exported six years of body fat logs and diet histories.

The system generated 2,190 pages of files, each one annotated by Carly.

If my body fat went up by even 0.2%, Carly would increase my cardio.

If I ate one extra bite of beef at dinner, she'd call it a lack of discipline.

If I took even a sip of sports drink, she'd make me burn off the extra calories the next day.

The assistant handed me a piece of hard candy, worried I'd faint from low blood sugar.

I peeled off the wrapper. But instead of putting it in my mouth, I just clenched it in my palm until the sharp edges bit red into my skin.

Before I walked out of the shop, I got a text from Carly. "Don't eat the chicken breast yet. Weigh yourself the second you get home."

I deleted the reservation reinstatement request and kept only the 2,600-dollar cancellation receipt.

Six months passed since then, and I hadn't stepped on a body scale in a very long time.My follow-up test results showed that my hormone levels were back within the normal range, my face had regained its color, and my chronically strained joints had slowly healed. When I first transitioned back to a normal diet, I still found myself calculating every bite of carbs and protein.Halfway through a plate of pasta, calorie figures would automatically pop into my head.Walking past a burger joint, even though I wanted one, I'd always check how many sets of squats I'd done that day first.Later, I set only one rule for myself—I should eat when hungry and stop when full.During the first week, I could only manage it for a single meal.By the second month, I started forgetting to keep track altogether. Then came a morning after breakfast—I had walked quite a distance down the street before realizing I hadn't measured my fasted morning weight. There was no panic at that moment, nor the

Before moving out of my old apartment, I went back for the final handover. The place was already mostly empty. That smart scale was still sitting right outside the bathroom door, in the exact spot it was when I left.Carly sat in the living room, her phone stuck on the fitness app's blank home screen. The platform had wiped the data and revoked all her administrative access. The progress curves that used to auto-update daily were now replaced by a single system prompt—no user bound. When she heard my footsteps, she immediately turned off her screen. "I want to keep the scale."I walked into the bathroom and picked it up.Six years ago, when Carly first brought it home, she stuck a little note on the bottom. "For when Danny puts on the sharpest suit."The slip of paper had already yellowed.I peeled it off and tossed both the scale and the note straight into the recycling bin outside the door.Carly followed me to the entryway, reaching her hand out for a brief second befor

The day the data deletion went into effect, Carly asked to meet me one last time. She chose an ordinary diner and didn't order for me.After handing over the menu, she even looked away, deliberately avoiding whatever I selected.I ordered a plate of spaghetti bolognese and added scrambled eggs.Carly just asked for a glass of water."What Aiden said was true." Her voice sounded raspy when she spoke. "Back when he left the country, he was the one who ended things."She finally admitted that the past romance she had packaged as a bittersweet regret was nothing more than an obsession born out of rejection. After Aiden left, she had kept the data from when his muscle definition was at its peak. Then I showed up. I was gentle, dependent on her, and willing to trust every single decision she made.So she took the exact set of rules she failed to impose on Aiden and forced them entirely onto me."At first, I really wanted to prove him wrong."Carly paused. "I wanted to prove that s

Carly and I met in a meeting room near the notary's office to handle our joint account and lease. Our total wedding fund sat at 23 thousand dollars. After deducting my share of the losses, what I paid back amounted to less than 3,000 dollars.Carly had already covered the shortfall and even listed the medical expenses as a separate line item. She attached no conditions for reconciliation this time."I'm stepping off the lease, and the deposit is yours. All the money for canceling the wedding has been put back in." Carly slid the signed documents across the table. "Take a look. If anything doesn't look right, I'll change it."This was the first time since the breakup that she had genuinely handed me the decision-making power.I flipped to the final page, confirmed nothing was missing, and picked up the pen to sign.Carly's gaze lingered on my hands. In the past, whenever we signed wedding paperwork, she always marked where I needed to sign and even dictated which pen to use.N

Three days after the breakup, the reception desk at my short-term apartment was stacked high with things sent by Carly.A newly tailored suit sat there, looser around the shoulders and waist, no longer forcing that extreme inverted-triangle figure. There were also 12 boxes of the high-calorie pastries I used to crave but never dared to buy, along with an unlimited credit card. The suit carried no cancellation terms, and the pastry packaging bore no nutrition labels. It was obvious she was trying her best to avoid anything that might set me off. When the front desk asked if I'd sign for the delivery, I stood before the suit for a long, silent moment.Eight years ago, Carly hadn't started micromanaging my body fat yet.Back then, after my winter basketball practice, she would buy me a roasted sweet potato and snap off the sweetest center section to hand to me.In those days, she remembered I was sensitive to the cold, and she remembered how I'd knit my brows if I bit into a char

Carly chased me all the way to the restaurant exit, ignoring Aiden for the very first time. She blocked the elevator doors, clutching the settlement agreement and medical report so tightly they crumpled in her fist."You're canceling the wedding just over that note?" she asked."Move.""Daniel Nash, I asked you a question."The elevator doors slid open, and I stepped inside.Carly followed me in and held down the open button to keep the elevator from going down. She was desperate to reduce this whole conflict to a simple note.As long as she deleted those few words, she could go right back to playing the devoted partner strictly watching over her fiance."You should actually take a look at the medical report," I said. The report was filled with words like severe stomach ulcers, chronic joint strain, and endocrine and hormonal disruptions brought on by years of dangerously low body fat.It spanned four years, with every single report tucked beneath my body fat logs.As Carly
