Chapter 2

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
I held on for another three hours, but Yvonne was still nowhere in sight. Lying on the couch, the world went black around me, and I passed out.

By the time I regained consciousness, I was lying in bed with an IV drip attached to my arm.

Yvonne had her back to me, reprimanding the housekeepers. "What the hell is wrong with you people? He's starving, and none of you thought to fix him something? If this happens again, you're all fired!"

Oliver walked in when he heard the commotion. "Don't be mad, Vonne. Come out and have some hot chocolate." With that, he pulled her out of the room.

The pale-faced housekeepers exchanged looks.

"I nearly had a heart attack. Ms. Preston hasn't been this furious in forever."

"This is all his fault! He acted all pitiful and got us chewed out."

"Let him enjoy it while it lasts. He'll be kicked out in less than two months anyway."

Right after saying that, they scampered away. I pulled out the IV needle and slowly walked out.

The first person who spotted me was one of Yvonne's friends. Obviously, she had no idea who I was. "Is he one of the new housekeepers you hired, Vonne?" she gasped. "Why did he emerge from your bedroom?"

Yvonne whipped around. The moment her eyes met mine, her pupils visibly shuddered.

Six years had passed since we'd last seen each other, yet she was still as elegant and refined as ever. I, on the other hand, looked like a weary traveler nearing the end of his journey. My brows were heavy with exhaustion and the toll of time.

Oliver let out a soft chuckle and walked over with his head held high. He carried himself like the man of the house and addressed the woman in the silk dress. "Selene, this is... a relative from Vonne's hometown. He's not a housekeeper."

I looked at Yvonne, who was silently holding my gaze. She made no effort to correct him.

I supposed she simply thought I was too embarrassing to introduce to her friends now. It made sense; after all, I was now nothing more than an ex-convict.

Besides, six years had passed since our engagement. Everything had changed since then.

As an awkward silence settled over the room, the chef announced that dinner was ready. Once we were seated, they started talking about recent events. I couldn't understand a single thing, so I simply kept my head down and focused on eating.

All of a sudden, Selene exclaimed, "Oh, right, Vonne. Isn't your boyfriend who's in prison supposed to be released soon? Since you don't even like him that much, why don't you give him some money and send him on his way? Whatever you do, don't let him latch onto you again."

In an instant, the lively atmosphere died down.

Oliver shot me a languid look, though the mockery in his eyes was impossible to miss.

Yvonne's expression remained impassive, but she didn't chime in.

Sensing that something was off, Selene was just about to pipe up when I chuckled. "He won't," I said calmly.

Intrigued, she turned to me and asked, "Why?"

I slowly chewed and swallowed the food in my mouth. Yet, before I could part my lips, Yvonne interjected. "That's enough. Let's just eat."

Multiple emotions swirled in her striking eyes as she stared at me intently. I kept my head down and continued my meal, immovable as a rock.

After dinner, Selene spotted the piano in the living room on her way out. "What an exquisite piano. Who did you buy it for?"

Oliver sauntered over to the piano, took his seat, and began playing with practiced ease.

After finishing the piece, he took in the admiration in Selene's eyes and said smugly, "I've only been learning piano for a little while, but my teacher says I'm a natural. I play it better than people who've been playing it for more than a decade."

Having said his piece, he glanced at me. It was obvious he had directed those words at me.

After all, I'd been learning the piano, violin, and all sorts of musical instruments since I was a child. The piano was by far my strongest suit. At my coming-of-age, I had even performed at a renowned concert hall.

Oliver was green with envy when he found out, and he had insisted that if he'd had the money to learn, he would've outshone me by miles.

Now that I'd spent six years in prison, he assumed I'd long lost my touch. So, he grinned at me. "I heard you've been playing for years, Mason. Why don't you show us what you can do?"

Yvonne's brows knitted together, as if she wanted to stop me. However, my fingers had already settled on the keys.

The very next second, a rich, rhythmic melody flowed effortlessly from the piano. Compared to Oliver's beginner-level playing, the difference in skill was night and day.

A flicker of awe crossed both Yvonne's and Selene's eyes. When the piece came to an end, they applauded at the same time.

"Why are you so impulsive?" Teresa clutched her arm theatrically, feigning grievance. "I was trying to help you, and this is what I get in return?"I almost cracked a smile as I watched her dramatic little act. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Yvonne had made a move. Hence, I immediately eyed her warily. Yvonne flashed me a bitter smile and roughly wiped at her tearful eyes. Her pride had already reached its limit, and her status and achievements over the years wouldn't allow her to lower herself any further. Yvonne exhaled deeply, her expression settling back into its usual aloofness. "I'll ask you one last time, Mason. Are you coming back with me or not?"My forehead creased, and I was about to part my lips when Oliver appeared out of nowhere and threw his arms around her. "This bastard doesn't deserve you, Vonne! You still have me. Let's go home, okay?" With that, he tried to yank her back.In an instant, Yvonne broke free and slapped him hard across the face. She s

Mason's POVMemories of those days flooded back, and I tugged at the corner of my lips. I refused to let the waterworks start and slowly spat out, "You told me to wait for you for two months. On the 59th day, I was so happy that I couldn't sleep. Yet, the following day, I waited until dark, and you never showed up. "I was terrified. I kept reassuring myself that something must've come up, that you'd been held up, and you'd come pick me up the next day. However, I waited one day, then another, and another, and you never came. "I don't even know which day it was when I suddenly broke down. I screamed and shouted like a madman until they finally pinned me to the ground. My nails were torn back and bleeding from struggling. Everyone looked at me with pity because I kept telling them my fiancee was coming to pick me up soon!"A derisive smile graced my lips as I continued, "From that moment on, I became the laughingstock of the prison. Everyone knew I was the lunatic who had been aban

Mason's POVI tore my gaze away and chuckled. "I'm four years your senior, Teresa. You used to be so polite to me when you were little. Why are you being so blunt now?"Her face flushed crimson, and she casually brushed back the damp hair clinging to her forehead. "Me? Polite to you? Don't flatter yourself!" she muttered under her breath.I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath on her, so I headed outside. Noticing that I had paid her no mind the entire time, Yvonne marched toward me with a grim face.Yvonne seized me and dragged me outside. Teresa quickly caught up with us and shoved her away. "What do you think you're doing?"Yvonne's gaze was dark and intense, as if a storm was brewing. Even though Teresa was younger, she was in no way intimidated, matching Yvonne's imposing presence. I was afraid a fight would break out, so I immediately separated the two of them. "Head home without me, Tessa."Teresa didn't budge. Her eyes were still locked on Yvonne with hostility.I p

Third-Person POVOliver was indignant. For the past six years, he had been showered with affection. He would rather die than go back to that godforsaken backwater. "Please look at me, Vonne. If you want to get married, I'll marry you!" Impatience flashed across Yvonne's face. "I only see you as my younger brother. I've made myself crystal clear." But was that truly the case? Deep down, she knew better.Yvonne and Oliver were both from humble beginnings, having witnessed each other's most embarrassing and wretched moments. Years had passed, and she now had more wealth than she could spend in three lifetimes. Yet, the moment she saw Oliver, she was instantly transported back to the insecure, down-and-out woman she had once been. Yvonne could make it up to him and take care of him, as if she was making amends to the impoverished version of herself from the past. However, she couldn't marry him. She wanted to marry Mason. That decision had never changed. However, he had alway

  • Six Years in Prison for My Girlfriend's Lie   Chapter 5

Third-Person POVYvonne stared at the disconnected call in disbelief. She couldn't believe that Mason would actually have the nerve to hang up on her. She had expected to see his face light up when he got her gift. Yet, she was met with his cold shoulder. Her brows drew together as she sat in her office, lost in thought. After Juliette knocked on the door and walked in, Yvonne sprang to her feet and strode out of her office. Oliver was about to tell her something, but the moment he opened his mouth, Yvonne walked straight past him as if something incredibly urgent had come up. He froze for a moment, and his expression hardened before he spun around and followed her into the car. Yvonne paid him no mind and slammed her foot on the gas pedal. No matter how Oliver tried to strike up a conversation, she remained silent. He bit down hard on his lip. He was so furious that the veins on his forehead bulged. The half-hour drive was cut in half. As soon as she got out of the car, she

"Don't cry. I'll buy you another one. Oliver didn't do it on purpose." Yvonne gently stroked my head to comfort me, but every word she said was really an excuse for Oliver. My whole body shook like a leaf as I clutched the shattered bracelet. Blood oozed out of my palm and dripped onto the floor, blooming into glaring crimson flowers. Yvonne's pupils contracted, and she immediately pried my hand open. Her expression darkened as she took in my bloodied, mangled palm, and she was about to snap at me when everything went black, and I fainted. …I slept particularly fitfully that night. When I woke up, my head was pounding, and my throat felt as though it had been scraped raw. Thus, I dragged my heavy body outside to get some water. As soon as I reached the corner, I spotted a couple at the end of the dimly lit hallway. Oliver's voice sounded pitiful, as if he still hadn't recovered from the earlier confrontation. "If I crash here, will Mason be upset?" "I call the shots in
