Mason's POV

I sat in the car and watched the cityscape recede. Six years had passed, and Neo-Maris had grown into a sprawling metropolis.

We glided past a towering skyscraper where a giant billboard was broadcasting a news segment. "The richest woman in the country, Yvonne Preston, splurges on a six-figure luxury watch for her new beau. The couple is seen walking hand in hand into an opulent mansion."

Six figures. I slowly counted the digits in my head. Then, I lowered my gaze to my wrist, where the red string she had bought for me six years ago still rested.

It had cost only two dollars, and the surface of the string had long since grown dull and rough. I gently untied it and casually tossed it out the window.

…

In the blink of an eye, the car arrived at a villa.

While I was lost in thought, Yvonne's assistant, Juliette Parker, handed me a phone.

Yvonne's light, melodious voice slowly came through. "I have something to take care of right now, Mason. Wait for me at home."

I listened quietly and waited three full beats before humming in response.

Yvonne fell silent for a moment, as if she was perplexed.

I had grown much quieter in six years. I was no longer the exuberant young man who used to fill her ears with endless, bubbling chatter.

After hanging up, I sat in the villa and waited for her return. The housekeepers behind me glanced at me a few times before whispering among themselves.

"Ms. Preston brought another man home again. This one's way too skinny. He's not good-looking, either."

"I heard he just got out of prison."

"Jesus, what bad luck! Ms. Preston's tastes are getting more and more eccentric. In the past, she at least brought home celebrities, models, and scions. This one's just..."

The three of them sighed, bemoaning how unworthy I was of someone like Yvonne.

I didn't feel a thing. I just couldn't help but raise my hand to check the time.

Seven hours had passed since Yvonne had asked me to wait for her return. I hadn't eaten a single thing since my release, and with the air conditioning blasting indoors, I was both cold and famished.

Unable to take it anymore, I asked the butler if he had heard from Yvonne. I had only asked him twice when he shot me an irritated look, as if I was one of those people who were constantly pestering Yvonne.

"Ms. Preston's with Mr. Emerson. The two of them are watching fireworks on a cruise ship. She doesn't have time for you."

Oliver Emerson—his name flashed through my mind. Six years ago, he had driven drunk and seriously injured two pedestrians. I had gone to prison in his place.

Consequently, I fell from grace—from the beloved scion of the Clark family to a lowly convict. Meanwhile, he had transformed into the man who had risen from the slums, whom Yvonne had spoiled and placed on a pedestal.

However, none of that mattered to me anymore. After surviving the bankruptcy of my family, followed by both my parents committing suicide, nothing could stir even the slightest ripple in my heart.

Except for the two things Yvonne had promised me before I went to prison—to take me as her husband and to redeem my family's heirloom bracelet.

But now, I no longer wanted to marry her. My only wish was to get my family heirloom back.

I snapped back to reality as the pain twisting in my stomach intensified. Clutching my stomach, I made my way to the kitchen.

When I tried to make something for myself, a housekeeper swatted my hand away. "Hands off! Ms. Preston and Mr. Emerson don't like it when outsiders dine here. Please hold on for a little longer."

With that, she rolled her eyes at me and strutted off.

"Why are you so impulsive?" Teresa clutched her arm theatrically, feigning grievance. "I was trying to help you, and this is what I get in return?"I almost cracked a smile as I watched her dramatic little act. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Yvonne had made a move. Hence, I immediately eyed her warily. Yvonne flashed me a bitter smile and roughly wiped at her tearful eyes. Her pride had already reached its limit, and her status and achievements over the years wouldn't allow her to lower herself any further. Yvonne exhaled deeply, her expression settling back into its usual aloofness. "I'll ask you one last time, Mason. Are you coming back with me or not?"My forehead creased, and I was about to part my lips when Oliver appeared out of nowhere and threw his arms around her. "This bastard doesn't deserve you, Vonne! You still have me. Let's go home, okay?" With that, he tried to yank her back.In an instant, Yvonne broke free and slapped him hard across the face. She s

Mason's POVMemories of those days flooded back, and I tugged at the corner of my lips. I refused to let the waterworks start and slowly spat out, "You told me to wait for you for two months. On the 59th day, I was so happy that I couldn't sleep. Yet, the following day, I waited until dark, and you never showed up. "I was terrified. I kept reassuring myself that something must've come up, that you'd been held up, and you'd come pick me up the next day. However, I waited one day, then another, and another, and you never came. "I don't even know which day it was when I suddenly broke down. I screamed and shouted like a madman until they finally pinned me to the ground. My nails were torn back and bleeding from struggling. Everyone looked at me with pity because I kept telling them my fiancee was coming to pick me up soon!"A derisive smile graced my lips as I continued, "From that moment on, I became the laughingstock of the prison. Everyone knew I was the lunatic who had been aban

Mason's POVI tore my gaze away and chuckled. "I'm four years your senior, Teresa. You used to be so polite to me when you were little. Why are you being so blunt now?"Her face flushed crimson, and she casually brushed back the damp hair clinging to her forehead. "Me? Polite to you? Don't flatter yourself!" she muttered under her breath.I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath on her, so I headed outside. Noticing that I had paid her no mind the entire time, Yvonne marched toward me with a grim face.Yvonne seized me and dragged me outside. Teresa quickly caught up with us and shoved her away. "What do you think you're doing?"Yvonne's gaze was dark and intense, as if a storm was brewing. Even though Teresa was younger, she was in no way intimidated, matching Yvonne's imposing presence. I was afraid a fight would break out, so I immediately separated the two of them. "Head home without me, Tessa."Teresa didn't budge. Her eyes were still locked on Yvonne with hostility.I p

Third-Person POVOliver was indignant. For the past six years, he had been showered with affection. He would rather die than go back to that godforsaken backwater. "Please look at me, Vonne. If you want to get married, I'll marry you!" Impatience flashed across Yvonne's face. "I only see you as my younger brother. I've made myself crystal clear." But was that truly the case? Deep down, she knew better.Yvonne and Oliver were both from humble beginnings, having witnessed each other's most embarrassing and wretched moments. Years had passed, and she now had more wealth than she could spend in three lifetimes. Yet, the moment she saw Oliver, she was instantly transported back to the insecure, down-and-out woman she had once been. Yvonne could make it up to him and take care of him, as if she was making amends to the impoverished version of herself from the past. However, she couldn't marry him. She wanted to marry Mason. That decision had never changed. However, he had alway

  • Six Years in Prison for My Girlfriend's Lie   Chapter 5

Third-Person POVYvonne stared at the disconnected call in disbelief. She couldn't believe that Mason would actually have the nerve to hang up on her. She had expected to see his face light up when he got her gift. Yet, she was met with his cold shoulder. Her brows drew together as she sat in her office, lost in thought. After Juliette knocked on the door and walked in, Yvonne sprang to her feet and strode out of her office. Oliver was about to tell her something, but the moment he opened his mouth, Yvonne walked straight past him as if something incredibly urgent had come up. He froze for a moment, and his expression hardened before he spun around and followed her into the car. Yvonne paid him no mind and slammed her foot on the gas pedal. No matter how Oliver tried to strike up a conversation, she remained silent. He bit down hard on his lip. He was so furious that the veins on his forehead bulged. The half-hour drive was cut in half. As soon as she got out of the car, she

"Don't cry. I'll buy you another one. Oliver didn't do it on purpose." Yvonne gently stroked my head to comfort me, but every word she said was really an excuse for Oliver. My whole body shook like a leaf as I clutched the shattered bracelet. Blood oozed out of my palm and dripped onto the floor, blooming into glaring crimson flowers. Yvonne's pupils contracted, and she immediately pried my hand open. Her expression darkened as she took in my bloodied, mangled palm, and she was about to snap at me when everything went black, and I fainted. …I slept particularly fitfully that night. When I woke up, my head was pounding, and my throat felt as though it had been scraped raw. Thus, I dragged my heavy body outside to get some water. As soon as I reached the corner, I spotted a couple at the end of the dimly lit hallway. Oliver's voice sounded pitiful, as if he still hadn't recovered from the earlier confrontation. "If I crash here, will Mason be upset?" "I call the shots in
