Chapter 1

I was chopping onions in the kitchen. The pungent smell made my eyes sting, but the knife in my hand landed firmly on the chopping board, making rhythmic thuds.

It had been three years since I last held a bloodied knife. Since being with Jules Gray, the young Don who ruled Las Vuntos, I had restrained myself. I replaced my tactical vest with a silk nightgown. I became just a housewife who made stews in this heavily guarded manor.

In the study upstairs, faint arguing could be heard, mixed with the dull thuds of heavy objects hitting the floor.

I scooped the onions into the pot. The flames licking the bottom of the pot made a sizzling sound.

The stew was ready, so I scooped a bowl of it and walked upstairs.

At the end of the corridor, the study door was slightly ajar, and a strong smell of cigar wafted out from the crack.

"Jules! Don Gray! You can't just ignore me!"

In the video call, Gianna Gray was crying heart-wrenchingly, "Samuel Robinson captured me! I just accidentally bumped into their goods. Save me, Jules!"

I stopped at the door, my fingers on the tray clenching slightly.

Gianna was Jules' younger sister as well as the Gray family's most favored and least capable member. She was always causing trouble for the family.

I had never heard her sound so panicked before. It seemed she was in serious trouble this time.

Inside the study, Jules sat behind the massive black walnut desk, a freshly rolled Cuban cigar between his fingers. As the smoke swirled, his deeply defined, almost otherworldly handsome face was faintly visible.

He said nothing, only twirling the ruby ring on his thumb. It was a symbol of his power as the Don.

The crying on the other end of the phone grew louder, and Gianna's voice trembled. Even through the screen, one could imagine her fear. "Jules! Samuel said he's going to chop me up and feed me to the fish... What should I do? I'm so scared. Jules... I'm scared..."

Jules' voice was hoarse, with a metallic chill. "Samuel, release Gianna and name your price."

On the screen, Gianna was kneeling on the ground, while Samuel casually placed a dagger against her neck. "Gray, do you remember how my son died? I'll let you choose. Give me 300 million dollars or Skylar Shaw. Otherwise... your sister..."

He lewdly tugged at Gianna's hair, leaning closer to her with an entranced look. "Is mine."

Hearing that, Gianna's terrified eyes instantly lit up with a desperate glint of hope. She screamed at the camera, "Jules! Did you hear that? Every debt has its debtor. Skylar should pay for this! Give him Skylar. Send her here and I can live!"

The screen abruptly went black, leaving only Gianna's heart-wrenching cry of, "Jules!"

My breath caught in my throat as I stood outside the door, a chill creeping up my spine.

Jules did not call back. He took a drag of his cigar, slowly exhaling a smoke ring. His eyes were calm.

"Skylar," he murmured, his voice as soft as a sigh.

Raymond Murray looked at Jules and could not help but say, "Don Gray, Ms. Shaw has been with you for three years. If she hadn't killed Samuel's son, the Gray family wouldn't be standing firm in this position now. Are you really going to abandon your lover for Ms. Gray?"

"Lover?" Jules chuckled coldly. "Raymond, Gianna is of the Gray family's bloodline. In this family, blood ties are above all else. Raymond, are you getting old? Have you forgotten the rules?"

He stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows. His back was to Gianna and Raymond as he looked out at the dark, rainy night. "She's the Gray family's knife. A dull knife can be sharpened and replaced, but I only have one sister."

"But..." Raymond wanted to say something more.

"No buts." Jules stubbed out his cigar in the crystal ashtray. Sparks flew as if extinguishing my three-year-long dream.

"Samuel wants his dignity back and revenge. If I give him Skylar, the two families will cease fire and Gianna's life will be saved. It's a good deal."

I stood there, my blood running cold bit by bit.

This was the man I had loved for three years. I thought I was his salvation, but it turned out I was just his asset.

A few seconds later, I took a deep breath, put on my usual gentle smile, and pushed open the study door. "Jules, the stew is ready."

Jules turned around, the gloom on his face instantly vanishing and replaced by an impeccably gentle look. He walked over, took the tray from my hands, placed it on the table, and then put his arm around my waist.

"Why aren't you asleep yet?" His fingers traced the back of my neck, where an old scar lay; it was from years ago when I took a bullet for him.

"I heard the noise and was worried it'd give you a headache." I looked into his eyes, trying to find even a trace of guilt in them, but there was none. His eyes were clear and affectionate; his acting skills were award-worthy.

"It's nothing. I solved it." Jules picked up the bowl of stew and took a sip. "Skylar, your cooking is getting better and better."

He put down the bowl and took my right hand.

My fingers were long and strong, with thin calluses on the web between the thumb and index fingers from years of holding a gun, but they had been softened and smoothed by hand cream in the last three years.

He placed a kiss on the back of my hand. "Wear that black backless dress tonight."

Jules spoke softly, his tone filled with undeniable affection. "I'm taking you to meet some friends."

I looked at him. "Okay."

I heard myself say, "Whatever you say, Don Gray."

...

Half an hour later, I locked the bathroom door, turned on the tap, and let the sound of running water fill the space.

I pulled out a mini communicator, no bigger than a coin, from a hidden compartment in the inconspicuous jewelry box. This was my last resort.

Jules looked haggard like a ghost, with sunken eyes and disheveled stubble.Seeing Gianna being trampled underfoot, Jules fell to his knees on the ground with a thump. His knees crashed heavily onto the scattered glass all over the floor, and blood instantly stained his pants.Jules crawled toward me on his knees. "Skylar! Let her go! She's my only sister! Please, come at me! Kill me! Don't touch her!"It seemed he had not been doing well over the years. If it were the old him, he would have held a gun to my forehead and threatened me.Now… This scene was familiar. Three years ago, I had once looked at him the same way, expecting him to save me.I tilted my head and gently pressed my mechanical fingers against the trigger. "Jules, I used to dream that you'd plead for me and protect me like this."Jules trembled, unable to speak."But you said it was all for the family."I mimicked his tone from back then, "You said I would understand. After the auction was over, a heavy downpour started.I sat in the rear seat of the extended Rolls-Royce, looking out at the rain outside.Luke sat opposite me, wiping his surgical blade. He remarked, "This blade is dull. It's time for a new one.""Then change it. Out with the old, in with the new," I replied flatly. As soon as the convoy left the underground garage, it was suddenly blocked by a Maybach that charged head-on. It was Jules' car.The bodyguards immediately got out of the car, drawing their guns and aiming them at the Maybach.Jules pushed open the door and stumbled into the rain. He did not use an umbrella, so his expensive tailored suit was instantly soaked through. However, he still tried to keep his back straight and maintain his last shred of dignity. He knocked on the window. "Skylar, let's talk."Through the rain, his eyes were filled with earnestness. "Just five minutes."Luke glanced at me. "Should we ram through?" "No need." I rolled down the car windo

Three years had passed, and the landscape of the underworld in the Amorias had changed. The Gray family was on the decline. The once powerful Gray family, who could make the entire Las Vuntos tremble with just a flick of a finger, now seemed like an old, sluggish lion.Ever since Jules ruined Night Owl, the family's sharpest weapon, for Gianna, no one in the Gray family had been able to take the head of an enemy single-handedly like Skylar. Due to that, Jules had to step in himself."Don Gray, the goods in the east district have been stolen again.""Don Gray, the dock in the south has been attacked. The enemy's firepower was too strong, and our people couldn't hold out..."Bad news came one after another.Gianna was getting even worse. She seemed completely oblivious to Jules' inability to cope, still living extravagantly and causing trouble everywhere.Several families were constantly fighting each other. Amidst this chaos, a new mafia organization named Y rose suddenly on th

Samuel walked over, reached out, and pinched my chin, forcing me to look up. "You didn't expect things to turn out this way when you killed my son, did you?" The surrounding thugs gathered around, while their lecherous gazes tore at my dress. My right hand was already numb from the pain, and blood dripped down the table edge, forming a pool on the floor. However, I could still feel my left hand.My left hand was quietly slipping into the folds of my skirt. There was a miniature C4 spiky explosive hidden there. This was my last insurance as a mercenary, and also my last shred of dignity.Jules thought I could not resist without a weapon? He was wrong. As Night Owl, I was a weapon myself."Tie her up. I'm going to have fun with her slowly." Samuel untied his belt with a disgusting grin. Two of his men held my shoulders and tried to drag me off the chair."Don't touch me!" I warned weakly yet hoarsely."Oh, you're tough." Samuel reached out to grab my hair. The moment his finger

Samuel stared at Jules with a sinister look. "Don't think I don't know. This woman is incredibly skilled. If she fights back, my old bones won't be able to take it." "What do you want to do?" Jules asked. Samuel kicked the toolbox beside him and kicked out a heavy iron hammer from it. "Cripple her." Samuel pointed at my right hand. "That's the hand she handles guns with. I want you to smash her bones with your own hands. Make her unable to hold a gun for the rest of her life. Only then can I accept this 'apology.'"The air froze. Gianna hid in the corner, trembling as she stuck her head out and looked expectantly at Jules. I did not turn around but just stared at the gleaming dagger on the table. "Skylar." Jules' voice came from above my head, carrying a complexity of emotions that I did not understand. "Don't be afraid." He bent over and whispered in my ear. His warm breath was on my earlobe, but it made me feel bone-chillingly cold. "Members of Samuel's family like sad

My fingertips trembled as I tapped the encrypted frequency that was firmly memorized in my mind. Just two beeps, and the call got through."I never expected you to contact me." A man's deep, resonant voice came through the receiver. The faint, chilling noise of a chainsaw cutting through bone could be heard in the background.Luke Chance was once the second-in-command of Night Owl Legion. He was also a deranged, unlicensed doctor who was internationally wanted for indulging in illegal live human modification.I looked into the mirror, saying quickly, "Jules is going to hand me over to Samuel. Find a way to rescue me."There was a brief silence on the other end, followed by the crisp sound of a surgical knife being thrown onto a metal tray.Luke laughed uncontrollably, his voice carrying a twisted joy."I told you that loser Jules isn't worthy of you. You disbanded the legion for him, even going so far as to cut ties with me..." I closed my eyes and clenched the cold communicat
