Ryker POV
I watch as I skate and I see my chance then their winger tries to thread a pass through the middle. I read it before it happens and I intercept the puck and take off. My skates cut in hard, my legs burn with every stride. Their defenseman lunges, but he's too late. Flicking my wrist, I send the puck sailing down the ice.
It goes straight into their empty net, and the horn blares sending the crowd wild.
Quinn is the first to slam into me, his glove smacks the back of my helmet. "There it is! Finally focused, huh? Right at the fucking edge, talk about cutting it close."
I let out a breath, nodding as the rest of the team piles in. "Yeah, I had to lock in eventually."
We kill off the last few seconds, and then it's over. We take the win, shaking hands with the other team before we skate off and go to our locker room.
The second I step inside, I start ripping off my gear. I don't have time to mess around, I need to get out of here.
Quinn notices right away. “Jesus, Ry, you in a hurry?”
Snorting, Kai nods, pulling off his jersey. “Bet he’s trying to make it to Erin and Jaxon’s performance.”
His words get a reaction and a few of the guys whistle, a couple of them laugh. "You're stressing that much?" Quinn shakes his head and tosses his gloves down. "They've had that move locked in for weeks."
“They should,” I mutter, yanking off my skates. “But it’s different in front of a crowd. If he drops her—”
“He won’t,” Kai cuts in. “They’ve got it.”
Yeah, that's what everyone says. I don't answer, I just pull my hoodie over my head and shove my gear into the bag. The rest of the guys are still celebrating, but I don't care. I grab my phone and check the time.
The performance starts soon. I sling my bag over my shoulder as I stand.
"You coming out tonight?" Kai looks at me.
"Sure, I'll meet you there after," I say as I walk towards the door.
"Wish them luck right, that's if you have time to see them before they start," Quinn call after me.
I lift my hand in response and walk out into the hallway, my legs are still burning from the game, but my mind is on one thing. Getting there in time.
Shoving out of the arena doors, my breathing comes out in sharp puffs as I make a beeline for my car. My bag weighs down on my shoulder, but I don't let it slow me. The parking lot is still half-full, a mixture of players, staff and fans filtering out of the game. I weave between them, digging out my keys while ignoring the fans trying to get my attention.
Jaxon and Erin’s event is across town, at the main civic center where they hold most of the figure skating competitions. I check the time on my phone as I unlock my car. I’m cutting it too damn close.
Tossing my bag into the backseat, I slide behind the wheel and start the engine. The heater kicks in, but I barely register the warmth as I peel out of the lot. I should’ve left the second the final horn sounded, but I had to finish the game. I had to make sure I didn’t completely abandon my team. Now, I just have to hope traffic doesn’t screw me over.
I grip the wheel tight, eyes flicking between the road and the time ticking down on the dashboard. I don’t bother blasting music, my mind is already too full, nerves twisting in my stomach like I’m the one about to step onto the ice.
The lights change and I stop. I tap my fingers against the wheel, exhaling sharply. The civic center isn’t far, maybe ten minutes if I push it. I just need to make it before they go on.
The lights turn green and I gun it, weaving through the evening traffic, barely registering the buildings flashing past. The second I spot the parking lot up ahead, I swerve into the entrance, cutting it tighter than I probably should.
The lot is packed. Figures. I don’t have time to waste looking for a decent spot, so I pull into the first open space I see, killing the engine before jumping out.
I take off toward the doors, my legs still sore from the game but my adrenaline carrying me forward. The sound of the crowd hums from inside as I push through the entrance, scanning for the staging area.
There off to the side, near the tunnel leading onto the ice. A few skaters wait, stretching, fixing their costumes, but my eyes lock on two familiar figures.
Jaxon is there standing tall, rolling out his shoulders, his face unreadable as he mentally prepares. Erin is next to him, adjusting her gloves, her expression focused but tense.
As I step closer Erin’s gaze snaps to mine. A flicker of relief crosses her face before she nudges Jaxon.
Jaxon turns, his brows raising slightly. “Didn’t think you’d actually make it.”
I huff, catching my breath. “Yeah, well. I had to win a game first.”
Erin shakes her head with a small smile. “Priorities.”
Glancing between them, my jaw tightens. I should say something, tell them to be careful, but they already know. They’ve trained for this.
Still, it feels wrong not to warn him. “Don’t drop her,” I mutter under my breath.
Jaxon exhales sharply, shaking his head. “Jesus, Ry. I’ve got her.”
“You better.”
Before they can step away, I pull them both in, my arms slinging around their shoulders. Erin leans in immediately, squeezing me back, and after a second, Jaxon does the same.
“You got this,” I say quietly. “Go kill it out there.”
Erin steps back, nodding once before turning toward the ice. Jaxon follows, exhaling slow and steady as they step out.
I stay back, watching them skate into position, my pulse matching the steady rise of the music. I made it, just in time. Now all I can do is watch.
Ryker POVThe air is even colder outside now. I pull my jacket tighter and see Aiden already by his car. He doesn't get in. He watches as I step onto the sidewalk. His jaw is tight, and his fingers flex like he's thinking twice about this. He scans the street, making sure that no one can see us.I smirk, shaking my head. “Relax. No one cares.”Aiden huffs a breath, running a hand through his hair. “You don’t know that.”I do, but I don’t argue. Instead, I turn toward my bike and swing one leg over. “You coming, or what?”Aiden doesn’t answer, but after a beat, he gets into his car and pulls out, following me toward my place. Just like he always does.We stop at my place and I can see Jaxon's car is here, but Erin's isn't. No doubt she's at a friend's. Getting off the bike, I walk to the door and unlock it.Stepping inside Aiden follows me, I don’t bother with a tour, he knows the place well enough already. I walk through to my room, and he stays quiet as he does.He closes the door be
Ryker POVThe coach’s whistle shrills through the air, signaling the end of the break. I push off the bench, skating back onto the ice, my mind finally locked into the game.Today has been tiring. The guys are sitting and drinking. It's not a heavy one, and we won't be late tonight. It's just to unwind a bit. We celebrated the win already, so now it's back to training and being careful of how far we go.The bar is still buzzing though, and the low thrum of music blends into the warmth of the alcohol that's settling in my chest.Kai and Quinn are still arguing about something. There's no guessing needed to know it will be something stupid. I stay sitting back, letting the noise wash over me.The feel of my phone buzzing has me shifting and pulling it out of my pocket. I expect Erin or Jaxon, but it's not. Instead, there, on the screen, is Aiden's name. I didn't expect that. I click it.Aiden: Are you out?Exhaling slowly, I stare at the message. I already know where this is going. On a
Ryker POVI didn't wait around. Erin showed up, so there was no point in me being there. To be honest, I would rather not watch them make out all day, either. I'm also meant to be training, so it's another reason for why I left so suddenly. When I get to the rink, I go straight through and get ready. Stepping onto the ice, the cold sinks into my skin like always. The guys are already here, scattered across the ice, running drills and stretching. They are already warming up for practice. The sound of skates carving into ice fills the space. There's a steady rhythm of movement and the occasional clash of sticks against pucks. The difference between here and where I came from is immense. Rolling my shoulders, I can still feel the leftover tension from last night, not from the game but from watching Jaxon and Erin's routine. From watching that near slip and knowing how close it was.He and Erin just brushed it off like it meant nothing."About time Ry!" Quinn calls from the far end, flick
Jaxon POVI instantly feel the familiar charge of energy as I dig my toe pick into the ice and launch. The air cuts around me as I rotate, my body is locked tight, and it's perfect, until I hit the landing. It's not as bad as I was expecting, there's a slight skid, a fraction of imbalance, and just like that, Ryker is there. His hands catch my waist, pulling me into him just enough to stop the skid before it can turn into a fall. His breath washes over the back of my neck.My pulse kicks up, my body tense as his fingers press firmly against my lower back. I fight back the groan from the pain it shoots through me.Exhaling, I pull away and turn to face him. "Seriously?"Ryker just smirks. "I told you. You're shit at landing when you're tired and hungover."Shaking my head I skate towards the boards, my muscles burning from the session, but it's not the jumps that have on edge. It's him. Every time that I wobbled, he was there, hands on my hips, my sides, my waist. He never hesitated, n
Jaxon POVI wake with Erin wrapped around me. Slipping out of bed, I shower and get ready for the day. I need to train more, and usually, if I get there early enough, no one else is there. Usually, I have the place to myself between five thirty and six thirty; Erin shows up any time after that. Because of who we are, we can go before the rink opens to others. My back is still hurting from yesterday, but I push it to the back of my mind. The easiest way to get over it is to work it. At least that's always worked for me.Getting inside, I sit and take off my shoes before putting my skates on. Stepping onto the ice, I stop. Why the hell is Ryker here? He's leaning against the boards, smirking.I'm too fucking hung over right now to deal with this. Exhaling sharply, I rub a hand down my face and step onto the ice fully. The cool air should help wake me up and clear my head.At least I think that, but Ryker smirks at me from the boards and I know my morning is going to be ten times more an
Ryker POVJaxon looks down at where my thumb brushes against his skin but doesn’t pull away. “Yeah, but guess what? I still landed it,” he mutters, smirking slightly.Quinn whistles. "Damn, Ry. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that you're flirting with him."Jaxon snorts. “Ryker? Flirting with me? Yeah, okay.”Yeah, he's in his own fucking world. Everyone but him and Erin know.Laughing, Kai leans back in his seat. "I don't know, man. He's got his hands all over you."Grinning I keep my hold on Jaxon's wrist a second longer before finally letting go. "What? Can't a guy appreciate his best friend's hands?" These things are vital to my entertainment. If you don't Erin, who else am I gonna make fun of?"Jaxon rolls his eyes but still doesn’t move away. “You’re an idiot.”“That's not new news Jax, and it doesn't change the fact that you still love me.”Jaxon exhales a laugh, shaking his head. “Yeah, yeah, don’t get all emotional on me.”I press my knee against his under the table, it'
Ryker POVSitting in the bar, I watch as the guys celebrate the win, not just mine but Jaxon’s as well. We’ve seen the scores, they did amazing. Everyone else watched it on their phones and thought it was flawless. It wasn’t. I saw the slight slip, the quick adjustment, and I know how close Jaxon came to dropping Erin. Sure, he didn’t, and I should go easy on him for it, but that doesn’t change the fact of what could have happened.“You’re really not that fun tonight,” Quinn kicks me.“I’m good,” I say as I grab the glass and drink the entire contents. I need to focus on me, not Erin.“You know what I think?” Liam leans over my shoulder.“That I’m going to knock you the fuck out if you don’t back up,” I snap.“No, that you miss me and want to get back under the covers with me.” His smile is damn smug. The entire team laughs. “I think he regretted it, actually,” Quinn chuckles.“Yeah, what were his words? That’s it. ‘Worst night of my life, don’t let me go home drunk with him again.’ I
Jaxon POVThe applause continues and I finally release Erin's hand, but I can still feel the pressure of her grip lingering on my skin. We glide toward the center of the rink. Our breathing is still uneaven, but keep our movements graceful and poised. No one in the crowd needs to know how close that was. Actually, no one needs to know that for a second, I thought I might lose control and spiral.I say that, but Ryker does, he's watched us enough he would have spotted the change.Erin straightens her costume, smoothing out an imaginary wrinkle as we take out final bow. The energy in the arena is electric, and the cheers crash around us like waves. I look toward the stands, and I know where to focus.Ryker is there, standing near the edge of the seating section. His arms are crossed tightly over his chest, he doesn't clap, he doesn't even move. Instead, he stares, his expression is hard and unreadable, I don't need to guess at what he's thinking about. I already know.I just gave him ev
Jaxon POVErin smiles at me, her hand slipping into mine. "Don't let Ryker get in your head. We're fine. We've done the move a lot; not once has it gone wrong." She reaches up and kisses me."Your hair," I whisper, capturing it in my hand. The black strands wrap around my fingers, and I tug gently."I forgot," she grabs a bobble and brush and begins to put it up. She doesn't look nervous at all, yet here I am, panicking that I'm going to drop her. It's weird that people think the women should be more scared; she's the one at risk of being dropped. The one at risk of being seriously hurt. That's true, but we are the ones doing the lifting. We're just as scared as we hold their future in our hands. One wrong move, one mistimed step, and I could destroy her life. She comes to stand back beside me, her black hair now tied up in a bun. Her blue eyes meet mine, and she squeezes my hand a final time.I hear the announcer call out names, and Erin squeezes my hand once more like she's reassuri
