Chapter 4

Penulis: Sweet Clementine
Hank stood there with his arms crossed, looking down on me like I was nothing.

"You must be really scared you won't find anyone to marry, coming here to apologize to me like this," he said.

I just looked at him, no expression on my face. "You're right, I should apologize."

He grinned, thinking he had won, but the bruise on his cheek stood out like a sore thumb.

I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "No, Hank. You're the one who should be saying sorry to me."

Hank just laughed harder, looking way too pleased with himself. "I don't get it. Why should I say sorry to you?"

He had all the time in the world to play dumb, but I was done playing games. "You stole my account and leaked Windsor's secrets, didn't you?"

"It doesn't matter who did it. What matters is who Nancy trusts."

"So Nancy trusts you. What's that prove? That you're a great actor?" At my words, Hank burst out laughing, his eyes full of scorn. I had had enough. I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm.

He looked around quickly, making sure we were alone, then whispered, "You know I'm the one who took the data. Do you really think I'd also mess with the surveillance? I don't have that kind of access."

His words hit me like a bolt of lightning. I was frozen. Hank could have gotten into my work computer, but the surveillance videos. They were on my personal computer, and only Nancy could get to those.

"The thing I hate most," Hank sneered, "Is people wanting what's mine. Keep it up, and I won't mind getting you locked up again.”

"Oh, and one more thing," he said, suddenly grinning like he had just thought of a great joke. "You don't know yet, do you? Your mom's dead. Died right before New Year's last year. Too bad Nancy was too busy with me to bother with that old woman. You have no idea how sad it was. I even felt bad."

He laughed like it was the funniest thing he had ever heard. I could not take it anymore. I clenched my fist.

However, Hank was quicker this time. He threw open the door, fell out onto the floor, and started screaming for help.

Nancy leaped off the couch and hurried over, helping the waiter pull me away from Hank.

"So, this is how you say sorry?"

Hank crouched down, frowning, and hid behind Nancy.

"Nancy, Samuel's lost it. I just said hi to him, and he freaked out and attacked me."

Nancy glared at me like she totally believed him. "If you're not going to say sorry, then just go away. Don't make a scene here. It's embarrassing!"

She shoved me, and I almost fell. She was so mad, she almost slapped me.

I tried to smile, feeling really let down. "My mom's gone. Why didn't you tell me?"

Nancy looked guilty for just a second, then she went all cold again. "If I told you, would that bring her back?"

It felt like my heart was ripped in half, it hurt so much.

She thought about it, then put her hand down and spoke softer. "You're wasting your time worrying about stuff you can't change. Just say sorry to Hank, and I'll still marry you, like I promised."

"Marry me?" I said to myself. Then, with everyone watching, I punched Hank, who was snickering behind Nancy.

"Samuel, have you lost your mind?" Nancy was shocked, then quickly stood up for Hank. She looked at me like she was super mad, like she wished she could just make me disappear.

I pulled back my hand, took the ring out of my bag, and threw it at Nancy's face.

"Marry me? Did I ever say I wanted to?"

She was so worried about him that she made me the fall guy. Maybe she knew all along it was not me, but she went along with it anyway.Because I'm the strong one, without a hint of depression?I could not help but laugh bitterly to myself. I looked at her with a chill in my eyes that must have scared her because she could not even meet my gaze."Nancy, do you know what sets humans apart from animals?"She looked confused, so I spelled it out for her, "Humans know how to put on an act, and sometimes they're even better at being beasts than the beasts themselves."After I went inside, Nancy did not leave. She stood frozen, like a puppet without a soul, her face as white as the snow around us. Our eyes met through the glass, and it was like I was back on New Year's Eve.I was shivering in the cold snow, and she was cozy inside a warm room, looking down at me with a mix of scorn and pity.I ignored the pain in her eyes and quickly closed the curtains. I could not look at her anymor

The questions came at me like waves, but I just did not get it.She was the one who did not want to marry me, after all.I pulled my hand away from hers and glanced at my jeans and T-shirt.I kept quiet, but Nancy looked like she had lost all her fight, nothing like the angry person she was just a moment ago.The year we were so in love was the same year she first put off our wedding for Hank.Back then, I did not know the truth. She said it was because of her job, but she actually went to see the Northern Lights with Hank. When she saw I was upset, she cuddled up to me and said in a sweet voice, "Samuel, I'm sorry. Work's been crazy this year. Let's definitely get married next year, okay?"I could not stay mad at her. Half teasing, half serious, I said: "If you do this again, I'll wear my everyday clothes at the wedding and hide in the crowd, so you'll never be able to find me."She laughed and slipped a fancy watch she had bought onto my wrist, then kissed me softly."That d

"That's okay, I have one."She pulled out the ring I had tossed aside and slipped it onto my finger herself.Hank stepped in front of me, trying hard not to show his jealousy. "Samuel, you made it. Is your hand still sore?"He was poking at old wounds on purpose, but this time, I was not the one to cut him off."Stop it! What's so fun about dredging up old stuff all the time?" Nancy's sharp words stopped Hank cold, and he just stood there, speechless.Nancy did not care about his hurt feelings this time. He had always thought he was Nancy's dream guy, the one she could not have. However, it turned out that once he became too clingy, he was just annoying.Nancy and I had our wedding date set for the fifteenth. She seemed even more eager than I was.She stuck by my side right up to the wedding day. She did not even go to work, and when Hank acted all depressed and threatened to hurt himself, she pretended she did not notice.Somehow, Hank calmed down after a while. He stopped fus

She even managed to cancel our wedding that we had finally set, just by saying, "Hank's not feeling well," like it was nothing. So this time, I did not bow down to her.We stopped talking, but her social media was buzzing more than ever.In the glitzy party lights, she would be all over Hank, but her eyes kept sneaking peeks at the camera.Hank, he would wave those photos in my face, taunting me.[You think you can beat me, loser? You couldn't get Nancy in ten years, but all it takes is one word from me, and she's mine.]I just smiled when Nancy, after a few too many drinks, tearfully asked me why I had not reached out to her, why I would not just say sorry."Samuel, just say you're sorry, and everything will go back to how it was. You can come back to work, and no one will bring up the jail thing," she said.I thought about it. Since getting out, only Nancy and Hank's crowd ever mentioned my time behind bars.Oh, and there was someone else I had almost forgotten.I was silen

"Samuel!" Nancy yelled as I walked away, feeling all numb. "If you leave now, you'll regret it!""Don't be mad, Nancy. Guys are jerks, especially the ones who've been to jail. Just ignore him for a bit, and he'll come back begging for forgiveness." Cindy said.Nancy's loud voice and the buzz of people talking around me started to sound fuzzy. I walked down the street, barely noticing anything, feeling like I was floating. The street was alive with excitement because it was a special day, but my heart felt empty and icy.I followed the address my neighbor Linda gave me and found my mom's grave.Mom was resting quietly in the snow, her picture on the gravestone looking as kind as always.I brushed the snow off the white daisies and felt warm tears drop onto my hand.I had dreamed so many times about seeing Mom again after I got out of jail. I even hoped she would be there smiling at my wedding with Nancy, watching me start my happy life. However, all those dreams were broken then
