Chapter 6

Author: Ann Chase
That night, Remi didn't come back to their room. Around midnight, Ariel woke up with a violent cramp in her thigh.

She dragged herself out of bed and struggled down the hall to Ella's room, hoping to find Remi.

She raised her hand to knock. "Remi, my leg's cramping. Can you…"

Before she could finish, she heard a woman's breathless voice from inside.

"Remi…"

"Shh, Ella. Keep it down. You'll wake the baby."

Ariel froze. The cramp spread through her thigh in waves. But the pain in her chest hurt worse than anything physical.

Through the wooden door, she could hear everything. Each sound hit her like a hammer blow straight to her heart.

She stared at the ceiling. Her mind drifted back to the early stages of her pregnancy.

Her body had been weak back then. She threw up constantly during those first months and barely slept at night, always running outside to throw up.

Every time she got sick, Remi would get up immediately and follow her out. He'd rub her back gently, his eyes full of concern. "Ariel, if I'd known pregnancy would be this hard on you, I'd rather we never had children at all."

Later, in the third trimester, she started getting cramps. When she couldn't move in the middle of the night, he'd patiently massage her legs for her.

For eight months, he'd done this day and night without complaint. But now, he wasn't by her side. He was with another woman, making love to her.

"Remi, I'm so happy! I can finally marry you. Even if it's only for a month, I'm completely satisfied."

"I'm sorry for putting you through this. I promise I'll take good care of you and the baby from now on."

"Remi, I love you. I love you!"

The sounds continued. The pain in Ariel's leg gradually eased.

She slumped to the floor as if all the strength had been drained from her body. She admitted she was completely defeated. But she was also grateful she could still walk away.

In the days that followed, Remi and Ella grew bolder. At meals, Remi would serve her food. During breaks, they'd sit together in the courtyard, laughing and talking under the sun. At night, intimate sounds always drifted from Ella's room.

Ariel ignored all of it. She quietly packed her things, contacted her parents down south, and bought a train ticket to leave.

She thought she could get through this peacefully until the divorce was final. But Ella clearly wasn't satisfied with that.

One evening, Ariel sat by the pond in a small chair, knitting a sweater for the baby. She was in good spirits. Tomorrow was the day she'd get her divorce papers, so today was her last day in the Callahan residence.

Though apparently, even the last day couldn't pass in peace.

Ella suddenly appeared in front of her with the baby. "You're in such a good mood, Ms. Slater! You're about to divorce the Commander and you can still sit here looking so content?

"Actually, I knew you were outside the door that night. I wanted you to know just how good things are between me and Remi now. I love him, and he loves me! He said he wants to devour me in bed. As for you, he said you're boring and rigid. He doesn't like you at all.

"Oh, and tomorrow is my son's one-month celebration. You'll be there to congratulate us, won't you? After all, you're the child's stepmother!"

"Ariel…"Remi knew nothing he said could express how sorry he was.He dropped to his knees in front of Ariel, his eyes bloodshot as he looked up at her. "I know nothing I say matters, but can you really bear to let such a small child grow up without a father?""Who says she won't have a father?"Ariel raised an eyebrow. "I'll meet a better man someday. She'll have a father. And even if she doesn't, she'll never call a scumbag like you Dad!"Remi, if you have any conscience left, go back now and never show your face in front of me or my daughter again! Otherwise, I'll move somewhere you'll never find us!""Does it have to be this way?"Remi cried. He truly felt the pain now."Why can't you give me one last chance like you did three years ago? Just one more chance, please?""There won't be any more chances, Remi." Ariel shook her head and spoke slowly and deliberately. "Three years ago, I gave you a chance. You didn't treasure it. Now you've lost your wife and your own child.

"Ariel, the baby didn't die, did she? Our baby is alive, isn't she? Ariel, come out and see me! I want to see our child! Why did you lie to me? Why lie when the baby's alive?"Remi yanked at the iron gate like a madman, shouting. Neighbors came out to watch the spectacle.Inside the house, Ariel was playing with Joy. When she heard Remi's voice, a mocking smile touched her lips.He actually had the nerve to ask why?If his men hadn't taken pity on her that day and taken her to the clinic, both she and the baby would be dead. He nearly cost her everything. Joy had nothing to do with Remi."That bastard Remi! I need to knock some sense into him!"Pedro started toward the door. Ariel looked at the man surrounded by neighbors and finally decided to go out and talk to him properly."Dad, let me go. If I don't make things clear with Remi, he'll probably harass me for the rest of my life. I'm exhausted. I don't want to deal with him anymore.""Alright, then give me the baby."Hannah

"What is Remi trying to pull?"After Pedro found out, he stormed across the street to confront Remi. All Ariel could do was tell him to calm down.Remi was directing the movers when he turned and saw Pedro behind him."Dad! You finally came to see me.""Hold on, Mr. Callahan. Watch how you address me. You and my daughter are divorced. I'm not your father and never will be."Pedro cut him off, his voice stern. "I'm asking you, what are you trying to accomplish by buying this house?""Dad, I know I was wrong. I came here to ask Ariel to forgive me."Remi frowned, his tone humble. "If Ariel won't forgive me, then I'll live here for the rest of my life until she does.""You shameless son of a bitch!"Pedro couldn't contain his anger any longer. He pointed at Remi and started yelling. "Do you remember what you said three years ago? You said the exact same thing!"You said you knew you were wrong, that you'd never see that woman again, and that you'd never betray Ariel. Then what h

Remi arrived in the south in the afternoon, exhausted after a full day on the train. But he didn't stop to rest and went straight to the Slater residence.Three years ago, he had picked Ariel up from this same place. Back then, he promised her parents he would never let Ariel down again. But in just three years, he'd made another mistake. And this mistake was far worse than the one three years ago. He was too ashamed to face Ariel, let alone her parents."Sir, who are you looking for?"The Slater family's housekeeper saw him lingering by the gate and said warily, "If you don't have business here, please leave. Otherwise I'm calling the police."She was new and didn't recognize Remi."I'm Ariel's husband. I'm here to see her.""You're her ex-husband?"Everyone in the Slater household knew what had happened to Ariel. Seeing Remi, even the housekeeper looked disgusted."I'm sorry, but Ms. Ariel is recovering from childbirth. She doesn't have time for you. Please leave!"The hous

Remi suddenly laughed. He deserved this. He deserved all of it."Remi, let me explain! You really misheard. The baby is yours!"Ella gathered her courage, got out of bed and reached for him, but he shoved her away."Don't touch me, you filthy whore! I'm giving you one last chance. Is that baby mine or not? Don't wait until I get the paternity test results to regret it. It'll be too late then.""Remi!"At those words, Ella immediately dropped to her knees in front of him, sobbing. "It was an accident! I called and asked you to come over. You refused, so I got angry and went drinking. When I woke up…"It was really an accident. I didn't even know that man. I never contacted him again after!"You have to believe me. Even if the baby isn't yours by blood, he can still call you Dad. He can still take care of you when you're old! You're not losing anything, right?""Shut your mouth!"Remi trembled with rage. He raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face."You played me l

In the car, Remi's expression darkened when he heard what his men said. The train station was right ahead, and the departure time was approaching. But Ella just had to threaten suicide. If she wanted to die, then so be it, but she was threatening to take the baby with her. She was completely insane."What should we do, Commander? Are we still going to the station?""Ella's a lunatic. She's capable of anything. If I actually leave, she really will take the baby with her."Remi tore his gaze from the station, his voice shaking. "Turn around.""Yes, sir!"As the car neared the house, his men called again. Ella had lost too much blood and had been taken to the clinic. Benson was fine. He'd already missed the train. Remi had no choice but to head to the clinic. When he reached the hospital room door, he heard voices inside."Ella, have you lost your mind? You actually tried to kill yourself?""Yeah, you almost died! Do you realize that?""All for that Remi Callahan? You'd really
