Chapter 5

Author: Anonymous
Mrs. Lynn's face tightened. She clearly backed her daughter, but even she knew this wasn't a good look.

Before she could say anything, Jacob made the call.

"Nina, you can take a cab home."

Wendy threw me a quick glance, a smug little smile tugging at her lips as the window rolled up.

I didn't flinch.

Classic Jacob—always asking me to step back for Wendy.

Right on cue, snow started falling.

Light at first, then settling into a thin layer.

I crouched, scooped up a handful.

Cold.

But not colder than my heart.

***

When I got home, Jacob was already packing.

Without even looking at me, he said,

"Wendy's not doing well. I'm gonna stay with her for a while. You'll have to cab it to work."

I said nothing.

Wendy was upset, so he was off to spend the night. To comfort her?

I didn't ask. He didn't explain.

He zipped up his bag, walked out, and didn't come back for a week.

Not one text.

But I knew what he was doing every single day.

Wendy made sure of it—videos, selfies, picture-perfect updates.

That's when it hit me. Jacob did know how to love.

He just decided who was worth the effort.

He cooked for her—real meals, balanced and thoughtful.

Cut her steak, picked out cute gifts.

Took her to amusement parks and out-of-town getaways.

All the stuff I used to wish he'd do with me.

Things he once called childish.

I didn't dwell. Just saved every photo, every video.

Then I wrapped up my projects and handed in my resignation.

My friends were stunned.

"Nina, why are you quitting all of a sudden?"

I just smiled.

"I've been gone too long. I want to go back home."

Someone asked, "Is Jacob going with you?"

They all knew how hard he'd hustled for his job. No one thought he'd actually leave it to follow me.

One friend tried to talk me out of it.

"Don't go. You are getting married. Living apart now wouldn't be good."

Even now, they couldn't—or wouldn't—see it.

As for me?

I'd already dropped everything once for him.

Moved cities. Started from scratch. All for Jacob.

Did I ever complain?

Was love supposed to mean giving up everything?

I shook my head.

"No. We won't be living apart."

That's all I gave them. No extra details.

I had too much to handle to waste time convincing people who didn't want to see the truth.

After wrapping things up and brushing off my boss's last-minute offers, I headed back to the apartment I shared with Jacob.

He was already there—with Wendy cozied up next to him.

They sprang apart when the door creaked open.

I acted like I didn't see a thing, walked past with my box of office stuff, and headed straight for the bedroom.

"You're back. No work today?" He frowned at the box. "Did you... quit?"

"Yeah." I didn't bother explaining and veered into the study.

He trailed after me, clearly annoyed. "Why would you just quit without telling me?"

Before I could answer, Wendy popped up behind him.

"Jacob, don't be mad. It's hard for women her age to keep up with the younger crowd. Totally normal she couldn't hang."

She said it like she was defending me, but every word dripped with mockery.

I just nodded.

"Useless," Jacob muttered, only relaxing when Wendy gave his arm a little squeeze.

If she hadn't been sending me all those snarky videos and screenshots, I might've said thanks.

Then my phone buzzed on the desk.

Before I could grab it, Wendy snatched it and gasped like she'd found a body.

"Ooo, who's this 'Hubby'?"

Wendy wouldn't stop crying. My friend muttered, "No baby, no wedding, probably."I didn't get it. As the wedding crept closer, my phone lit up with an unknown number.I answered—big mistake.Jacob's voice cut through, sharp and pissed. "Nina, where are you? What's this about breaking up?"I checked the time. Two weeks. Took him that long to realize I wasn't bluffing?I didn't bother replying. Just hung up and blocked him.Seth and I got married without a single snag. When he slid the ring on my finger, he straight-up cried. Said he'd loved me for years. Said he'd been waiting for this moment forever. The way he cried? Hit me right in the chest.I stepped closer, stood on my toes, and kissed him."Seth Stratford, from now on, we've got each other's backs.""Yeah. Always."***After the ceremony, I checked my phone—dozens of texts from a random number:[Nina, how could you marry someone else?!][Come home. I'll forgive you!][I was wrong, Nina. Please. Let's start over.][I'm sorry. Don't marry him. I'm begging you.]...I scrolled through every message, cool as ice

I had no clue how Jacob would take the message.Didn't really care.Right after hitting send, I blocked his number, deleted the chat, and got on a flight home.Outside the airport, I spotted Seth right away.Same old vibe—black trench, sharp jawline, sunglasses on, standing there like he owned the sidewalk.Every girl walking by did a double take. That's just who he was. Total natural. The second he saw me, Seth lit up, waving like a total dork before striding over. Before I could even say hi, he pulled me into a hug. "Nina!"I flinched, gave his shoulder a quick pat.He backed off fast. I shot him a look. "Personal space, dude. Boundaries.""Tch, it's not like you're—" He caught himself, stuck out his tongue. "Okay, okay. Got it."I rolled my eyes and let it slide. Classic Seth.In the car, I glanced over. "You came alone? Your parents cool with this?""Obviously. I'm here to marry my wife. Gotta keep the fam in the loop for that kinda thing."I cleared my throat. Time

Seth and I talked on the balcony for half an hour before I headed back in.Wendy was still camped on the couch, chatting with Jacob. The second he spotted me, his smile dropped. "You're not gonna explain?"I raised a brow. "Explain what?""That guy's name in your contacts." His voice was all sharp edges.I blinked, thrown for a sec.Where did he even get off asking me that?Like my dumb nickname was worse than him planning a baby with someone else? But whatever. Not worth it. "It was a joke."His jaw was still tight. "Change it. What if someone else sees?"I gave a quick nod. That took the edge off him.Wendy had been watching, and yeah—there was that flash of jealousy in her eyes.Right as Jacob opened his mouth again, she jumped in. Jacob's face shifted. He yanked the phone from me, eyes locked on the screen, mood tanking."Nina, who is this?"I didn't answer—just watched him, kinda stunned. Was that... anger? Jealousy? After all these years, I'd never seen that look on him.I used to think nothing touched him. Like he was ice, all the way through. But now? Not so much.Weird.I thought he didn't care.Back in college, some guy confessed he liked me. Jacob walked in mid-scene.Did he freak out? Nope. Just stood there, all cool and unreadable. That's when it hit me—he either didn't care, or that was just him. Ice-cold by default. No jealousy, no fight, no effort to keep what wasn't his.So why now?I took the phone back, met his stare. "It was a joke."His brows pulled together like a puzzle piece just snapped into place."It's Seth, isn't it? You're still talking to him?""Yeah."Wendy leaned in, nosy as ever. "Seth?
