Chapter 3

Author: Frosted Crane Call
On Monday morning, as I stood in front of Kensington Group's building, the system was still rambling on and on in my head.

[Clement, have you really thought this through? You're walking right into Nolan's turf. According to the original storyline, he'll—]

Walking into the building, I casually asked, "He'll do what?"

[He'll prepare a complete set of office supplies for you on your first day, arrange your workstation, and even have his assistant buy you breakfast... Huh? Wait a second. He doesn't seem that villainous after all…]

I couldn't help but burst into laughter. I had known for five years that Nolan was far from an airheaded scion. If the system hadn't pitted us against each other, perhaps things wouldn't have turned out the way they were that day.

The elevator doors slid open, and before I could even take a step forward, Nolan was already waiting outside. He sized me up before knitting his brows. "I bought you new clothes, didn't I? Why are you still wearing this?"

I lowered my head and looked at the white shirt I had on. "Those clothes are too expensive. I—"

He cut me off. "I told you to wear them. So, you should've worn them! Why do you have so many excuses? Come with me. Your office is on the 18th floor."

I froze for a moment. "My office? I'm just an engineer. I don't need—"

Without sparing me a glance, he responded, "You need one, and that's final. Kensington Group isn't Langston Group. We don't dump our Chief Engineer in a cubicle. Also, your salary…"

He turned around and handed me a debit card. "Here's a three-month advance on your salary. Pay your rent first. I won't have you getting evicted and embarrassing me!"

Looking down at the bank card, my fingers trembled slightly.

The system suddenly asked quietly.

[Why do I feel like something's wrong, Clement? Aren't those supposed to be the heroine's lines?]

I was sitting at my desk, zoning out, when my new assistant, Jonah Jones, poked his head in. "Mr. Kensington asked me to let you know that he'd like to have lunch with you, Mr. Carlisle. Our company cafeteria's cuisine is as authentic as it gets."

I snapped my head up. The Langstons preferred bland food, as Aria suffered from severe stomach issues. I, on the other hand, was from the southwest region, yet over the past five years, it felt as though I had never tasted the flavors of my hometown.

Nolan and I sat across from each other at lunchtime. John trotted over with a steaming pot of chili con carne.

Nolan frowned. "I forgot to tell him not to add onions."

I stiffened. "How do you know I don't eat onions?"

He looked at me as if I had asked the most ridiculous question in the world. "What kind of stupid question is that? I have eyes. Of course I'd noticed."

I couldn't help but let out a bitter chuckle.

Right then, my phone lit up with an incoming call from Aria. I didn't answer it, letting it ring until it finally went to voicemail.

The very next second, Nolan's phone rang. He snickered and declined it without a second thought.

"She probably saw the announcement our company just released about our new Chief Engineer. Aria's been proud and arrogant for years. I never imagined I'd get to see her lose her cool."

Biting down on my fork, I lapsed into silence. "I thought you liked her."

He arched his brow. "Aria's wealthy and gorgeous. She truly is the dream goddess of everyone in this industry. However, I'm not so bad myself, either.

"At first, I merely couldn't stomach being outdone by a guy like you. But now that I can crush Langston Group in business, I can't tell you how happy I am!"

Aria's call came through again, but I still didn't answer.

The system asked cautiously.

[Clement, are you really not going to pick up? Realizing you've really left, she's actually panicking a little.]

As I stared at my phone, I remembered the countless nights in the last five years I had spent waiting—waiting for her call, her messages, or even a single glance from her. I had waited five years, yet she had no idea where I lived, when I went to bed, that I had gone to the hospital alone for an appendicitis surgery, or that I worried about rent every single month.

Aria wasn't aware that I didn't eat onions, that I was allergic to mangoes, or how many days and nights I had spent silently waiting for her. There were far too many things she wasn't aware of, yet Nolan was aware of all of them.

All of a sudden, I exhaled deeply, popped open a can of Coke, and raised it toward him. "Pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Kensington."

Then, I blocked Aria's number.

A year later, Kensington Group's smart chips had completely taken over the market, and the company's stock price had tripled in value. At the celebration banquet, Nolan had far too much to drink. Clutching the microphone, he refused to let it go and announced to the hundreds of people below the stage, "The best decision I, Nolan Kensington, have ever made in my life is poaching Clement from that dump called Langston Group!"Thunderous applause erupted from the audience. I was all smiles as I sat in the corner and held my wine glass.Just then, my phone lit up with a text from an unknown number. "Congratulations." I took a look at it and left it on read."Get over here and cut the cake, Clement! It's strawberry-flavored!" Nolan called out to me in the distance.I walked over, smiling. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and said, "Next year, we'll ring the bell at NASDAQ. Then, we'll go on a trip around the world, and… Hear me out, what if we set up a branch in San Marida?"

Aria stood at the entrance to my office, looking even more haggard than she had at the press conference. Her dress was rumpled, her makeup was slightly smudged, and her eyes were bloodshot. Nolan poked his head out from behind me and let out a derisive chuckle. "Are you sure you're in the right place, Ms. Langston?"Paying him no mind, she looked straight at me. "I'd like to have a word with you, Clement." Right after saying that, she took a step forward, but Nolan instantly stepped in front of me. I patted Nolan on the shoulder. "It's fine. I'd like to hear what she has to say." Nolan shot daggers at her and begrudgingly stepped aside. Instead of leaving, he leaned against the edge of my desk, keeping a watchful eye on her. Aria took a deep breath. "Langston Group's almost finished." I remained silent. "I know I brought this on myself. That proposal of yours—the one I casually tossed into the trash two years ago—I want to pick it back up now, but it's too late." Her voi

In the six months that followed, Kensington Group's smart chip project progressed at breakneck speed. Like a man possessed, Nolan flew me all across the globe. San Marida, Bregenzia, Westminister, Silicon Arc... We left our footprint in every major tech hub, securing one major partnership after another. "Clement, don't you think we were just born to be business partners?" Nolan sprawled across the couch in the hotel, grinning foolishly while clutching a bottle of red wine. "Why on earth didn't I realize sooner how awesome it is to work with you?" My eyes were glued to my computer screen. "Because back then, you were too busy competing with me over a woman." He was rendered speechless for a moment. Then, he guffawed. "That's right. I was such a huge idiot. I had such an amazing partner right in front of me, yet I chose to butt heads with you over a woman instead."He scrambled off the couch and inched closer to me. His breath reeked of alcohol as it fanned across my face. "Seri

Ever since the system announced that I had successfully conquered my target, it disappeared. It didn't reappear until three months later, when I walked out of Kensington Group's office building after working overtime. [Long time no see, Clement. How have you been?]The corners of my lips lifted slightly. "Not bad. Much better than before."The system fell silent for a moment. [I reported your situation to headquarters. You're the first host since our inception to complete a mission after changing targets. It might even lead to a major overhaul in our future operations.]I stopped in my tracks and couldn't help but say, "Honestly, it wasn't your fault. I was the one who kept clinging to that sliver of warmth from five years ago, so I made one mistake after another. However, I believe that the people in this world should not be reduced to mere labels like male leads and supporting male characters, nor defined solely by rivalry and conflict. We're living, breathing human beings who

The entire hall went silent for three seconds before a wave of notification chimes broke out like a rising tide. Standing on stage, I watched the blood drain from Aria's face. I pulled out my own phone and saw a financial news notification on its screen. "Kensington Group Secures More Than One Billion Dollars in Investment From Ostria's Rothschild Foundation, Doubling the Value of Its Smart Chip Project."The crowd gasped, and all eyes turned to the entrance at the same time.Clad in a burgundy suit, Nolan sauntered in with a cigar between his fingers and a smirk on his lips. An entourage of impeccably dressed foreigners followed in his wake, led by none other than the Executive Director of the Rothschild family's Pacifica Region, Mr. Sinclair. "I apologize for keeping you waiting." He winked at me. "My flight was delayed, and it held up our roadshow."I stood frozen on the stage, watching as Nolan walked up and took the microphone from me. "The technology Mr. Carlisle just

Aria never tried to contact me again in the three months I worked at Kensington Group. Nolan assigned me the most professional team and granted me the highest level of authority. I buried myself in work and often forgot to eat and sleep. Occasionally, I caught wind of news about Aria through other people's social media feeds. Even when someone intentionally brought her up in front of me, I simply smiled and brushed it off. Gradually, even the system seemed to have given up on me and left me to my own devices. The only time I happened to run into Aria was at an industry conference. I was on stage, confidently presenting our company's core technology, while Aria sat in the audience, gaping at me. When we brushed past each other after the event ended, she suddenly called out to me. "If you come back, I can pretend that none of this ever happened."I looked at that familiar face of hers, but for some reason, she suddenly felt like a stranger. I took half a step back, my demeanor col
