ZYREN POV

I pushed the door open and found her exactly where I’d left her, sitting on the edge of the bed with her hands folded in her lap, that brave little smile still fixed in place like she thought it could fool me.

It never could.

I crossed the room and knelt in front of her, taking both her hands in mine.

“Ruby.”

Her eyes flicked up at the sound of her name — I didn’t say it often, always “little one” instead, and I saw it land on her, saw her breath catch.
