Ryder’s chest heaved as he stared down at her. The anger in his eyes was still there, but it was getting completely swamped by a heavy, desperate need to just keep her safe.

He didn't know whether he should be furious with her for neglecting her health or simply wrap her up so tightly that the rest of the world couldn't touch her.

He grabbed a soft, clean blanket from the edge of the cot and wrapped it tightly around her bare shoulders, covering the torn silk of her nightgown. His large hands

The door clicked shut, leaving Lyra alone in her guest room. She sank into the mattress, letting out a long, shaky sigh. Standing up, she unzipped her heavy formal dress and let it pool around her ankles. Underneath, her skin flushed warm in the cool room air. She stepped out of her underwear, catching a glimpse of her soft curves in the vanity mirror before sliding into a loose tank top and a pair of tiny, comfortable shorts. She crawled back onto the bed, her limbs heavy with exhaustion. Just as her eyes fluttered shut, the door clicked open again."Lyra? You awake?"It was Kaida. Lyra shifted on the sheets, propping her chin up on her hands to look at her sister. "Nope. Just exhausted," she mumbled, her voice thick with sleep.Kaida kicked off her tight heels with a relieved groan and slid onto the edge of the mattress. A knowing, playful smirk touched her lips. "So, what's the deal? I saw how you were looking at him tonight."Lyra played dumb, blinking sleepily. "Who?""The Alpha

His large hands were surprisingly gentle as he tucked the edges around her neck."I miss you so much," Hazel said softly, as she reached out from the blanket, trying to hug him."Easy," Ryder growled low, but his hands immediately came up to catch her arms, stopping her before she could strain herself. He sat down on the very edge of the narrow cot, his massive frame making the mattress sink deeply under his weight. His dark, icy eyes scanned her pale face, his jaw clenching with thick worry. "You are hurt, H

Hazel sat solemnly in the center of the massive bed, clutching her knees tight against her chest. The bedroom felt too big, too empty, and entirely too quiet. She hadn’t seen Ryder for hours now, and the silence was starting to mess with her head. She couldn't quite wrap her mind around the chaotic feelings twisting in her stomach. She missed him deeply. Just a couple of days ago, she wanted nothing more than to run away from this place, but now her body felt completely hollow without his presence. Maybe it was because of the fresh, raw mating mark hidden beneath the collar of her nightgown. "My lady, you don't look like you had a single drop of sleep last night," Chloe said softly, as she squeezed a warm sponge over Hazel’s feet in the porcelain tub.Hazel looked down, her red, tired eyes focusing on the kind-faced maid. Her head felt heavy, and a dull ache was throbbing behind her temples, making it hard to even breathe normally. "Do you know where Lord Ryder is?" she asked, her

Hazel's heart tightened at the raw pain in his voice. She had never seen Ryder like this. "What are you talking about?""The mating urge, my beast knows you're my mate," he said hoarsely. "To him, that's all that matters. He wants to claim you... and once he takes over, I don't know how much control I'll have left.". "I need to get out of here," he snapped, throwing his legs over the side of the bed, trying to flee his own dark impulses.Hazel lunged forward, grabbing his thick wrist. "Wait, Ryder. Don't go. You won't hurt me."Ryder whipped his head back. His eyes weren't human anymore; they burned with a pitch-black desire "If I stay, I will mark you," he warned, his chest heaving. "I won't be able to stop."Hazel stared at him, her heart pounding so hard it hurt.Only yesterday, the thought of him touching her had filled her with fear. But now... after seeing the way he'd fought against his own instincts, after hearing the desperation in his voice, something inside her had changed

Ryder continued staring at the door long after she had disappeared."...Fuck."He raked a hand through his dark hair and let out a slow, weary breath. Somehow, every conversation with her ended the same way. The harder he tried to get closer, the further she seemed to retreat.Every time he got close to her, she looked at him like he was the devil himself. He remained where he was, unable to make himself move. His fingers gripped the crystal glass of whiskey so tightly that his knuckles turned white. The amber liquid inside shook, reflecting the absolute storm raging inside his chest. He took a deep, burning gulp of the liquor, but it did nothing to cool the fire in his veins. The wolf inside him refused to be ignored. It paced restlessly through his mind, growing more impatient with every passing second.Mine, the wolf snarled inside his head. She is ours. Why did you let her walk away?Ryder slammed the empty glass down on the heavy table. The sharp crack echoed through the quiet ro

The massive dining hall felt heavier than a physical weight pushing down on Hazel’s fragile shouldersShe stood completely frozen behind the solid, towering wall of Ryder’s back, unable to see anything except the dark fabric of his expensive suit jacket, which stretched tightly across his broad shoulders. For several long, agonising seconds, neither of them moved. The rich scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the dark aroma of roasted coffee beans seemed to wrap around her completely, making her feel as though she were trapped in a very small space with a powerful creature that could crush her with a single movement. When he looked down at her, his cold eyes were still burning with a dangerous spark that told her his inner beast was incredibly angry about his brother’s playful interruption and his compliments toward her. She twisted the fabric of her dress. "Sit down," Ryder said. She did not dare to say a single word in response, so she simply nodded her head quickly and slid
