CASPIAN

Days passed, turning into long weeks after weeks, until eventually two months went by. The chief commander had returned several times with news that left me in a bad state every single time.

Namiko had not been found, despite her father's associate, Ethan who was now residing in the palace for as long as the search intended to last… joining the guards and leading most of the search.

It was like she vanished into thin air, ceasing to exist in our very realm. The council had been very quiet after Rhogir, but some of them whispered the possibility of Namiko being dead. Why wouldn't they? Most of them are clearly eager to one day hear those words leave my mouth, but I knew one thing for sure. That would never happen.

It aggravated me each time I heard them suggest something so despicable.

Namiko couldn't be dead, she was out there, somewhere we had just not reached yet. I could feel it in my heart that she was out there, probably hating and wishing never to see me agai

NAMIKO I woke up before dawn, hoping to avoid Annabeth. This was the best I could do after my failed attempt to make Arya understand. I grabbed fresh clothes and headed to the river for a quick wash. The river was quiet when I arrived, and the sky was still dark. The water looked still, the surface barely rippling, like it was holding its breath. I slipped my sandals off, dropping the clothes I brought to the side, then getting rid of the one I had on, already bracing myself for the cold, when my gaze landed on something. A person standing in the distance at the edge of the water. My heart skipped a beat as I palmed my mouth to keep me from screaming. I took a step forward, to peer into who it was. A chill ran down my spine when I caught something familiar. “Arya?” I recognized the clothes she was wearing from last night. She wasn’t washing or gathering water, she was just staring into the water like her body was here but her mind was somewhere else. For a second,

NAMIKO The bonfire crackled alive, sparks of the fire flying in the air looked like tiny fireflies. Shadows of familiar and unfamiliar faces danced around it, singing, clapping and just screaming with joy and happiness. I sat on a tree stump, with my hand clasped in front of me and a genuinely happy smile, I flashed my teeth to every man, woman, or child that looked my way. The Bonfire Night, Annabeth called it. A small ceremony the camp held every two weeks for no reason other than gratitude to the goddess for survival, peace, and no interference or attacks. It was another fortnight where no one had been taken, hurt, or forced to flee. This was my third one in the past two months settling here. The first two were actually entertaining. However this one. . . Even though it wasn't bad, but my chest felt so tight with worry. I watched Annabeth laugh near the fire, her face warm in the glow, her eyes soft as she spoke to a group of women. She looked lighter tonight, prett

NAMIKO Settled in the cool river, the water swallowed me halfway, and the gentle current brushed against my skin, soothing every ragged edge inside me. My eyes were sealed shut, as I hummed a soft, low tune Annabeth had taught me over the times we spent together. The past two months had been a complete whirlwind for me, but it was peaceful having the right people around me. I had found little of the joy I always wanted to feel after the series of unfortunate events I had gone through months prior. It felt like the world had finally understood how to leave me alone. “Sloane.” My name echoed across the water, breaking the serenity like a log of wood being severed by an axe. I breathed out slowly and tilted my head to the sound , I spotted Aaron waving at me from the riverbank. His grin was wide and full of unfiltered joy, and I couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at my lips. Reluctantly, I rose from the water. My wet clothes clung to me, dripping and outlinin

NAMIKO Waking up with sore eyes, after crying all through the night. An unbearable ache in my head rose with me. I blinked to clear my vision, rising from my bed. A part of me felt surprised that I was alone, but I shrugged off the thought. I wasn't anyone special here. Just another stray. “You are awake.” I looked up to see Annabeth, beside her was the mini version of her, the one who had shown up to help the first time I came here. “G–Good morning.” Annabeth approached me with a warm smile and joined me on my bed. Her daughter followed with only a few steps forward. “How are you faring?” She asked, touching my forehead with the back of her palm. “I am fine.” I lied, despite the solid ache I was feeling. I didn't want to think about the supposed reason making me feel this way. “Hmmm, but you are still burning up. You must be in pain. Where does it hurt? Your arm? Maybe a headache?” “I’m really fine,” I insisted, pulling away from her a little too quickly. “I just

CASPIAN Standing by the window of my chambers, I stared at the acres of greenery right before me. Namiko had once asked me what I planned to do with such massive land aside from staring at it from my window. I recalled how ignorant I was of the suggestions she kept piling on, even when I was paying attention to her. It was my first try at being less dominant, softer, and more open. We had just spent our third night together, and by the crack of dawn, I was by the window watching the sun glaze up the untouched land. “Does it bring you peace?” She had asked, taking me by surprise. “What?” I asked her, confused about what she really meant. “You did the same thing yesterday.” She pointed forward, “Staring at the view. Does it bring you peace?” “No,” I replied, lost for words. I didn't know what to tell her. The land belonged to my father, where he had slaughtered one hundred guards because they failed to protect me from a rogue attack, which had left me bedridden for o
